What is GUI ?• A graphical user interface (or GUI, pronounced "gooey")

def.: is a method of interacting with a computer through manipulation of graphical images and widgets in addition to text.

• Graphical User Interface is a graphical way to represent the operating system.

• Allows user to use a mouse or keystrokes to select icons and commands from menus

What is Widgets ?

• button • check box • radio button • combo box • icon • text box (edit field)• tool tips • scrollbar

• status bar • toolbar • menu

• Window

A widget is a graphical component, or control, that the user interacts with, such as a window or a text box Example of widget:

What Is A Window ? • A portion of the screen (in graphical form) where

programs and processes can be run. • You can open several windows at the same

time.

• What can you do with window?

What is An Icon ?• is a small picture or object that represents a file,

program, web page, or command that can be manipulated by the user.

• serve as visual mnemonics and allow the user to control certain computer actions without having to remember commands or type them at the keyboard.

• There are 3 default icon which are placed on a standard Windows desktop and come with the Windows OS package.– User– Computer– Recycle Bin

Icon - User• User is your personal folder or user-defined collections of

content.

Icon - Computer

• Computer shows you the contents of your Hard Disk Drives and other devices or removable storage attached to your computer.

Icon - Recycle Bin

• All deleted item/data will be stored here.

• Deleted data can be recovered here.

• To permanently delete a file, just click Empty The Recycle Bin.

• The following items are not stored in the Recycle Bin and cannot be restored:

• Items deleted from network locations.

• Items deleted from removable media (such as 3.5-inch disks).

• Items that are larger than the storage capacity of the Recycle Bin.

Desktop• you can display single picture or a slide show of

pictures as a background.• You can go to Personalization Gallery to set and

customized your theme or desktop background.

Start Menu• is the main gateway to

your computer's programs, folders, and settings.

• What can we do in Start Menu?– Start programs– Open commonly used folders– Search for files, folders, and

programs– Adjust computer settings– Get help with

the Windows operating system– Turn off the computer– Log off from Windows or switch

to a different user account

Taskbar• horizontal strip at the bottom

of your desktop where your open files and programs appear.

• each of your open programs appears as an individual unlabeled button & you can rearrange them in the order you want by clicking and dragging.

• It’s also where the Start button lives.

Notification• The notification area is a portion of the taskbar that

provides a temporary source for notifications and status. It can also be used to display icons for system and program features that have no presence on the desktop.

• Items in the notification area are referred to as notification area icons, or simply icons if the context of the notification area is already clearly established.

System Tray• To give users control of their desktop in Windows® 7,

not all notification area icons are displayed by default. Rather, icons are displayed in the System Tray/ notification area overflow unless promoted to the notification area by the user.

Files & FoldersA file is an item that contains information—for example, text or images or music. When opened, a file can look very much like a text document or a picture that you might find on someone's desk or in a filing cabinet.

On your computer, files are represented with icons; this makes it easy to recognize a type of file by looking at its icon. Here are some common file icons:

Files & FoldersA folder is a container you can use to store files in.On your computer, folders work the same way. Here are some typical folder icons:

Folders can also store other folders. A folder within a folder is usually called a subfolder.

Creating a FolderA folder can be created either from the Desktop or from the Explorer. We can create a folder inside another folder

Creating a FileThere are three ways to create file:

create a file from the Desktopcreate a file from within Explorercreate file from within an application

Renaming File or Folder

There are three ways to rename a file or folder:

1. Left-click twice (wait about a second between clicks) the name of the file or folder, and enter a new name in the highlighted box.

2. Right-click the name of a folder, choose Rename from the shortcut menu, and then type a new name.

3. Select the file, press F2 button

Deleting File or Folder

There are three ways to delete a file or folder:

1. In Explorer, right-click the name of the file or folder, and then choose Delete from the shortcut menu.

2. In Explorer, left-click the name of the file or folder and then press Delete or click the Delete button on the toolbar.

3. If the File is visible on the Desktop, click the name of the file or folder, and drag it to the Recycle Bin.
