    Programme £1

    Theydon Bois Village Hall CM16 7ER Sun 3rd Nov. 2019 2:30pm

Swing music from all the great Bands played live by this great Band

  • A View from the Middle Welcome to this afternoons concert, and if this is the first time you have heard the Band, or the first time you have visited this excellent venue, we trust you have an enjoyable afternoon.

Once we received notice that The Kenneth More Theatre was closing, we had to move quickly, and are grateful to the Theydon Bois Parish Council for helping secure use of the Village Hall. This will not be a new venue for those who attend the Festive Crackers Concert each December, but this is the first time we have staged one of our more formal concerts here.

As for our two major concerts next year, we have been able to book the fantastic theatre at Forest School. This is a new venue for us, but has an unrivalled level of facilities for both players and audience. There will be plenty of onsite secure parking at this venue, which is easily reached by Public Transport. Prior to the concerts we will be providing plenty of information about how to get there.

Recently there has been a new company appointed to run the Kenneth More Theatre, but it is early days yet, and we have taken the decision to allow the new company to gain more experience before we consider returning.

These changes have created a great deal of excitement within the Band, as well as giving us a whole new set of challenges to overcome but, as usual, members of the Band are rising to the challenge.

These are very difficult times for amateur music groups, so we are really appreciative of your support and hope this will continue, no matter where we perform, and that you will try to encourage friends and family to attend future concerts.

After toda s concert there ill be plent of opportunities for ou to see the Band in the lead up to the festive period. We kick off with a small group playing at the Theydon Bois Christmas Fayre at the end of November, then we have a mixture of Concerts and Carol Services right up to the Sunday before Christmas.

Once again thank you for your support.

    Musical Director

Life Events A little over a year ago I got married and as a result was given the day off by my emplo er as it as a life e ent Apart from making me onder if I should get married more often, it got me thinking about Fairlop Brass life events. It was a dull day. Obviously the first event was the conception of the Band back in 1968, a subject much written about and celebrated and so I will not dwell here but move on for the next event when the first players of Fairlop Junior School Band went to senior school. At this point the Band ent ith the pla ers and the School part of the Bands name as relaxed, though junior players were still there actively taking part. The next event is a sensitive one for the players but important as a Band none the less: pubert It is at this time that pla ers become distracted an man gi e up music as it is not seen as cool. As we shall see, quite the opposite may be true (not the cool bit perhaps but for the ability to find romance). Even today when we play some old piece from this period, when players put their names on the music, our older members will spend a moment with misty eyes over such names. I dare not ask why. The ne t ke e ent as also in the mid s hen the first Band member came to lea e school. The result was that the Band started to become and adult organisation, still very young but not just holding youth players. This transformation was a gradual one and event now we happily employ youth players. Another small life event happened in 1977 when the Band relocated to St. Francis Church to rehearse. We are still there now rehearsing every week. Another small event next, or maybe not: Kevin Jordan takes over the baton. For most Bands this is a regular occurrence but for Fairlop this has had a big influence on the culture of the Band and also encouraged it s de elopment at the time, Kevin being a Band member since 1968.

  • An odd Band life-event was when Mark Wheeler joined the Band. Odd in that Mark was the first player who had not been to Fairlop Junior School. It was a big thing at the time, big enough that a meeting was held to discuss the consequences. The result is here, Mark is still with us playing Soprano. The Band is now into early adulthood with the consequence of the next life-event: marriage. Many of these marriages were assisted with Band relationships (see earlier comments) and were tested with Band experiences, fiancés surviving concerts and contests to prove to be an ideal partner. I draw a veil over Band stag and hen parties, not all events are to be fully remembered and certainly not documented. Of course marriage is followed with the next life-event of births. There were times when two or three pregnancies were on the go all the time as part of Kevin's gro our o n Band initiati e No time

was wasted either with press-gang methods of recruitment. Some results of these events are in the Band today, some are now professional musicians. Retirement has crept into the Band, this can be seen with this increase in casual comfort clothes such as cardigans and sensible shoes, the less frantic look at the start of rehearsals and those others that work, arrive stressed and often without lunch. Most annoyingly, (for those of use that still work and pay taxes for the pensions of the others is the ne assumption that e er one has endless amounts of spare time to read masses of emails and suggestions of more things to do. In case you are wondering, I am still working. For the last 20ish years the Band settled into a steady state, more youthful players, marriages (including mine) and more births (not mine). Recently however the next life event has arisen: grand-parenthood. An alternative term could be second-youth as our new grand-parents dote and share baby pictures and stories. And why not? It is a special time, I suspect others are looking on and then to their children with expectation in their eyes be warned! I myself am still getting over the shock of marriage.

  • Ch i ma i C ming again 20 years ago in Folkestone, the Band were contesting We d had some success in recent years, picking up several trophies it was a great day out and it always a sunny day. Often the band members could be seen at the market on the beach (if playing last, there was more time to make those essential purchases) and Steve Smith and I headed that

a A man as selling arious stuff from the back of his an ou kno the sort C mon Sir ou can ave this bargain toda not for not for it s a steal at just OK let s make that as it s nearl Christmas I was drawn in and bought some chocolates; Steve pointed out that the d taste like cardboard and would be out-of-date. What could possible go wrong? Well, it turned out the eren t quite Belgian as on the bo it said the ere Belgian-like and ould be out of date by the following week.

What was I to do now? Of course the answer was to wrap them up and give them to Steve for Christmas! Steve and Jennie saw the funny side of it and I heard nothing else until the follo ing Christmas Unsuspecting Mel and I never expected to hear of the chocolates again but they had hidden them in a carved out book and wrapped them!

Quite clearly we needed to up our game, so the following year Mel baked a cake (a festive Nativity scene) and secreted the chocs (still in their box) and we got an astonished call from the Smiths when the

knife failed to penetrate the expected Victoria sponge but hit the box! Anyway, to cut a now two-decade story short the chocolates have passed back and forth in various ways including a made-to-measure wine carrier (that took Steve a month to build a new take on a Trojan horse!), as Scottish cheeses (yes really), hidden on a cupboard for 3 months followed by cryptic clues leading there, hidden in my trombone case, disguised as an Amazon parcel, as a prize in a raffle, and recently also dropped by a drone.
