BACKGROUND: NIREE CREED

Throughout her 44 year career, Niree Creed has been the first woman to undertake significant roles, especially during her early career as a journalist. She was the first woman to appear on ABC television news, at a time when few reporters were seen or heard on television. In London, she was the first woman to be appointed the Senior Scriptwriter and Senior Duty News Organiser for the international news television agency, Visnews (now part of Reuters). In these roles, she directed and mentored male writers and camera crews around the world. In Australia, Niree was the first female reporter on the acclaimed ABC documentary series “A Big Country”, and was the first female studio presenter of Channel 7’s “11 AM” program. This thorough grounding in all aspects of journalism, documentary production and the news cycle equipped her to develop a successful career in public relations, beginning with her role as Director of Public Relations for the National Farmers’ Federation, and over a period of 10 years, when she successfully operated her own consultancy. Her long experience in Canberra, working closely as a journalist and adviser with the public service and seven successive Federal governments, has provided a deep understanding of Australia’s constitutional system, and the complexities facing those who engage with government at all levels. Her last role as one of the Governor-General’s three senior advisers combines Niree’s wealth of experience to establish a strong public profile for the Office and Ms Bryce. It was a unique role, requiring definitive diplomatic skills and an understanding of the requirements of a suite of stakeholders, including the media, the Defence Department, community organisations, diplomatic posts and foreign governments. The elevated status of the Governor-General’s Office has provided a unique view of government, the community and Australia. Extensive travel to remote and rural areas of Australia and numerous overseas countries, has afforded her incomparable experience, perception and maturity.
