The day seems like just the other meetings as
Rotarians unhurriedly arrived at the venue with PP Ferdie Marañon being the early bird. As the day headways however, time is no longer an issue for the Rotarians present as they assemble and greet each other.
The arrival of the Guest of Honor and Speaker, Kadayawan 2019 Event Organizer Mr. Harold Quibete made the day even more stimulating. In his discourse, Mr. Quibete shared his experiences and how he became the Director of the most regarded celebration in the Country today. Looking at his profile, Mr. Quibete explained why he decided to change course of his endeavours. “Doing the job
must come from the Heart”, he said. “It is not worth doing it if you do not love your job. That is why I now understand why Robin Williams committed suicide. He makes other people happy but not himself”, he added. In his final note, he clarified some controversial issues regarding the Kadayawan celebration and presented the technical aspects specially the competitions such as Indak2x sa Kadalanan. President Dadz Mahipus, after presenting the Certificate of Appreciation thanked Mr. Quibete for the first hand information and enlightenment of the controversies. He also acknowledged the presence
Pride
Up to a certain degree, pride is an admirable quality that helps motivate individuals and groups to attain high levels of performance and accomplishments. It gives people pleasure or satisfaction of their worth, possessions and achievements. One can take pride in one's work. One takes pride in one's family, community and country. It is this feeling of pride, which brings joy to a person, for being part of that success, and encourages competitiveness, oneness, esprit de corps, protectiveness and patriotism.
If left unchecked however, pride tends to eventually have a power if its own. It can take over a person and distort his values for altruism and common good and makes him focus more on himself. It can lead to arrogance, conceit and imagined or exaggerated superiority. Pride starts to feed upon itself and eventually leads the person to excessive ego tripping and self-love.
When this happens, the individual can become obsessed with only his own interest and plans. His feeling of superiority will justify all his subsequent actions, even if they may become oppressive to others.
This is what happens with Tyrants, Dictators and misguided Presidents. Their high opinion of themselves would not allow them to admit mistakes, nor other actions like greed and oppressiveness. Too much pride will lead to delusions of grandeur, and a sort of messianic complex, believing all their actions eventually lead to the common good. Any opposition and dissent are interpreted as acts of jealousy or malice, and anybody not conforming to what he, the superior individual decides on, is justifiably and conveniently eased out of his trusted circle.
In the present order of things that we now find ourselves in, it would take a massive dose of Humility to be infused into our present leaders, with a generous helping of Rotary principles, to reverse the
trend of self-destruction, our Society seems to be headed towards.

Hi fellow Rotarians,
August "Ghost Month" is finally over... It’s BER months
already and soon it will be Christmas time. Let’s plan our Charter
Night in October and Christmas Fellowship in December. Let us
make it more exciting for the Rotary families.
We welcome Engr. Bema Tajones of PAGASA in our midst
today. We hear more about the workings and mission of their
Department straight from the horse's mouth. We also expect
Visiting Rotarian Dr. Remegio Confesor Jr. of Ohio USA to join us
today. Welcome to our club meeting.
Our club joins the City in providing aid to the poor flood
victims of Talomo and Los Amigos. Let us share a little of what we
have to alleviate their miserable conditions at the Evacuation
Centers. Please turn over your help in cash or in kind to our Club
Treasurer PP Oka Gonzales or thru Jerson and Joan. We will
schedule the visit so Rotarians may join.
God bless Rotary Club of Davao...
Lets be rotary-like in our dealings with the

SEPTEMBER 2019
Here in the United States, another summer is winding down. And for the Maloney family, every summer ends with a return to my hometown of Ridgway, Illinois, for the annual Popcorn Day festival, where I am honored to serve as the “Popcorn King,” the master of ceremonies for the day’s events. Regardless of the season, every family has its own traditions. I would like to suggest a new one for yours: Find an opportunity to introduce your family to Rotary. One of my family’s traditions is to take our daughters and grandsons to the Rotary International Convention. The 2020 convention in Honolulu will be a wonderful way to introduce your children and grandchildren to the internationality of Rotary. We are planning many family-oriented events for everyone to enjoy.
Any time is a fabulous time to bring family members on a Rotary service project or to a fundraising event. But perhaps you have not seen many family-friendly events at your club. That is precisely why one of my top priorities this year is to make most Rotary events welcoming to family members.
We must foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with family, but complements it. We should never expect our members to choose between the two. That means being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.
Often, the young professionals that Rotary needs to attract in order to remain a dynamic 21st-century service organization are the very people who have the greatest family responsibilities. We must not keep these prospective young members away from their families by holding events on evenings and weekends at which their children are not welcome.
For too long, we have closed the doors of many Rotary events to children and sometimes even spouses. What wasted opportunities these are! Every chance we have to pass on the gift of Rotary to young people is one we must take if we are going to grow Rotary and ensure that the next generation is fully engaged in our mission.
So let us open our doors and do it in a fun way, with opportunities that make our children and grandchildren want to learn more about Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary membership. Start small if you must — perhaps by holding some of your meetings at more family-friendly times — but think about how you can continue these kinds of events for years to come.
Bringing children to Rotary events is not just fun; it also exposes them to the world! Make this a memorable year for your family — and an unforgettable year for the ever-expanding family of Rotary as Rotary Connects the World.

Shekhar Mehta of India selected to be 2021-22 Rotary International President
Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2021-22. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested.
Mehta acknowledges that current membership trends are a challenge and says that membership development should be Rotary’s highest priority. He believes that focusing on regional plans, successfully transitioning Rotaractors into Rotary clubs, and increasing diversity and female members could yield a 5 percent net growth in membership each year.
“A major brainstorming is needed to find effective solutions suited to different areas of the world,” says Mehta. He adds that regional ethos and culture have to be taken into account to find localized solutions, as “one size does not fit all.” He believes Rotary can extend to new geographical areas and countries.
As a strong proponent of Rotary’s strategic plan, Mehta says he will encourage clubs to use action plans and reinforce the core values of Rotary.
Mehta says Rotary needs to become more contemporary and adaptable by focusing on partnerships with governments and corporations, expanding partnerships with organizations that specialize in Rotary’s areas of focus, and investing in technology.
Mehta, an accountant, is chair of the Skyline Group, a real estate development company he founded. He is also a director of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based organization.
Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of ShelterBox, UK. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the disaster.
