It’s been more than twoyears since the last polio casewas reported in Côte d’lvoire.Time enough for people tobecome complacent aboutimmunizations. But thatwould be a mistake – apotentially deadly mistake.

“The public sometimesdoesn’t understand why, afterso many rounds of polioimmunization, they are stillbeing asked to bring theirchildren to the immunizationpost,” says Marie-IrèneRichmond-Ahoua, chair ofRotary’s National PolioPlusCommittee in Côte d’lvoire.

As a long-time advocatefor polio eradication,Richmond-Ahoua knows youcan’t let up against thistenacious and cripplingdisease. With Nigeria one ofthree remaining polio-endemic countries, thepossibility of fresh outbreaksin Côte d’lvoire is a constantthreat. The only way to keepthe poliovirus out of thecountry are regularimmunizations of all childrenunder age five.

During NationalImmunization Days (NIDs) inApril, thousands ofvolunteers and healthworkers, together withRotary and Rotaractmembers, canvassed thestreets throughout thecountry in search of childrento immunize. They traveledfrom house to house knockingon doors in shantytowns andrural villages. But gainingentrance to these homesrequired another round ofconvincing.

“Côte d’lvoire has just

experienced a conflict andpeople are still cautious. They don’t want to open theirdoor to just anyone,” saysRichmond-Ahoua. But oncethey see the polio T-shirtsand hats that Rotary clubssupply to identifyvaccinators, she says theyfeel safe opening their doors.

Communication is also keyto mobilizing public support.Rotary members use themedia, television, radio, andeven griots, African tribalstorytellers, to encourageparticipation in

immunizations. As a result,7.5 million children receivedtwo drops of oral poliovaccine, along with vitamin Asupplements and de-wormingtablets, during the NIDs.

Supplementaryimmunization campaigns likethis one are part of thecomprehensive 2013-18 PolioEradication and EndgameStrategic Plan. The planoutlines what is needed toeradicate all polio disease by2018. In June the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundationannounced a new fundraisingagreement with Rotary. Ifsuccessful, the campaign, which matches donationstwo-to-one (up to $35 millionper year), will help raise $525million for polio eradication.

“Polio eradication is notan option, it’s an obligation,”Richmond-Ahoua says.“When you consider what’sbeen done in Côte d’lvoire, despite the many obstacleswe’ve faced, you are deeplyconvinced that polio willsoon be eradicated.”
