dear members,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for entrusting me the honour to lead the

Club for the past two years. Given the dwindling income from all segments, last two years have been

very challenging for the management committee. On the one hand we have been trying to organise

many activities and events for members to bring life back to the club, while on the other hand we have

had to work with shoestring budgets. Nevertheless, we managed to do what was necessary, and our

members have been pleased with the activities and events.

Last August, the management committee made the tough decision to adjust subscription fees. This

has substantially improved the Club’s financial position. However, the improvement was dampened

by the new jackpot rulings in November which saw jackpot income falling by a further fifty percent to

barely $20k a month. Thankfully the Club is still operating with a surplus. I am also grateful that our

members have understood that the monthly fee increase was necessary to keep the Club’s financials

sustainable at the operational level, albeit with dwindling revenues.

Many members have given us feedback that they like the colour scheme of the newly painted walls of

the Club’s premises. Our thanks to Alan Fan, the Chairman of House & Grounds for his input as an

architect, and also to the in-house maintenance team as they carried out the painting work.

On a sombre note, I regret to inform members that the renewal of the Club’s long term land lease

have been delayed as the authorities informed us that they require more time to evaluate their

redevelopment plans before reverting to us.

As the Club’s 30th Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, 24 June 2018 at 3.00pm,

we really hope that more members will turn up for the meeting to elect the new Management

Committee for the next term. I sincerely hope more members can come forward to serve in the new

Management Committee to bring the Club to a new height of excellence.

Thank you

Club Chairman,

Steven Yuen

Hordes of Kopitiam Uncles and Aunties from the 80s flooded Fairy Point Chalet 4 on 19 March 2018. No it’s not an invasion blast from the past but rather our annual CBC staff function!

All members of the CBC staff dressed up to the theme and celebrated our successes and hard work for the past year.

Thanks to the generosity of members, the management committee and kind sponsors, our hardworking staff were rewarded with a well-deserved break filled with food, drink and laughter.

Of course in true Singaporean fashion, no party is complete without a lucky draw! We would like to thank our sponsors once again for truly wonderful gifts that include a Kenwood master mixer and the prize that everybody was eyeing, the iPad Mini 4!

Congratulations to all the winners and a huge shout out of appreciation to everyone who made this

night possible!

Besides our regular bands performing on Friday and Saturday nights, we have introduced various ‘Theme Nights’, with gigs by invited guest bands. Playing their respective genres, they add colour and variety to delight and appeal to the different tastes of our members and their guests. So far this first quarter of the year, we have had DJ Dennis spinning tracks on 20 January, Passion Puppets rocking on 24 January, and ‘Mabuhay Nite’ on 10 March with Soul Siren, a Filipino trio. Feedback from our members has been positive, and more monthly ‘Theme Nights’ are being envisaged.”

TiKam TENNIS 2018 16 JANUARY 2018

CBC tennis evening members welcomed 2018 with Tikam Tennis on a Saturday afternoon on 6th January.

Thirty members participated in this annual event where luck of the draw determined the doubles pairings and match-ups, but individual skill and experience still affected the final outcome. This incidentally saw several members ending the day with various prizes and souvenirs. More importantly, the event was blessed with excellent weather, wonderful sportsmanship, great company as well as free sideline entertainment from our jamming resident guitarists and singers, creating a carnival atmosphere on top of competitive and entertaining doubles tennis.

Here’s looking forward to next year’s ‘tikam-ing’! – CBC Tennis Section

15 CBC members responded to a tennis friendly invitation from Singapore Swimming Club (SSC) at Tanjong Rhu.

Thanks to our kind hosts, there was good competition, good company, good food, great fun and enjoyment. Many doubles matches were played, with even a few involving ‘mixed’ SSC-CBC pairings, which really reflected the very casual and friendly spirit of the event.

We are looking forward to reciprocating with an invitation to SSC for a friendly at CBC later this year. – CBC Tennis Section

SwIMMING Carnival11 MArCh 2018

“2018 I felt that the competition was really exciting as I was able to test my abilities competing against the other swimmers. I will definitely come back again to participate as I am able to see where my current performance stands among the other swimmers, and this motivates me to practice harder. - participant, women’s butterfly open This event was like a family gathering. my kids really enjoyed the balloon sculpture and magic show and I had fun with the agro yoga. We also had fun on the bouncy castle. Seeing how my kids were enjoying themselves really made my day. We will be back again as this event allows me to bond with my family, making the weekends a lot more fun. - Carnival participant The overall event was great! While I feel that the organisation of the categories could be improved, all in all I enjoyed myself. I will definitely be back again to compete in the swim meet. - brina ho

EFFECTIVE STroKE PrEVENTIoN TALK JANuAry 2018 “personally, I found this talk on effective Stroke

CbC YoungEr mEmbErS - wINE APPrECIATIoN & BBQ11 FEBruAry 2018

On Sunday, 11 February the Club held our second event organised for younger adult members, ranging from 16 to 45 years old. The gathering commenced with wine appreciation hosted by the French Cellars. Participants were taught how to engage their senses of sight, smell and taste when drinking wine. They sampled white, rosé, red and sparkling varieties of various French appellations. They also paired the wines with a sampling of brie and camembert cheeses, which both went very well with red wine. The wine appreciation was followed by a barbeque at sunset. Smokey char-grilled meat and vegetables were downed with draft beer. It was a relaxed, cosy and enjoyable event for all. We are all looking forward to more younger members joining us at our future events. If you are a younger adult members (aged 16-45 years) and would like participate in / help organise such activities / events, or if you have any feedback concerning this area, kindly contact Senior Social Events Executive — Eugene by emailing [email protected]

“FA CAI nighT FEBruAry 2018

Overall, it was a great night. The highlight of the event for me was the band, lynn and the lovebirds.

Having attended numerous functions, the most memorable was this Fa Cai night as my family took home 1st and 2nd prizes for the lucky draw segment.

We are very grateful and would like to thank all the committee members and staff who put in so much effort to organise this ‘lo Hei ‘ night as it was a great success.
