WELCOMETOBLACKHEATH

ThefewweeksbeforethestartofthecricketseasonarealwayssomeofthebusiestoftheyearatBlackheath,butevenbypaststandards2019hasbeenfrenetic.

TakingontheformergroundofGrafham&SmithbrookCCatGrafhamasournewsecondgroundisamajorundertaking.Numerousclubmembershavebeendevotingmanyhoursoftheirtimeoverthepastfewweekstomakeithappen,andthanksareduetoallofthem–I’msureeveryonewillagreethattheefforthasbeenwellworthwhile.AlthoughreseedingofpartoftheGrafhamoutfieldmeanswillthatthegroundnotbeabletohostseniormatchesforafewweeksyet,theplacealreadylookstransformedandisnowreadyforjuniorgamesandFridayeveningpracticesessions.Andfollowingtherecentannouncementofa£43,000grantfromSportEngland,weareconfidentthatourproposedextensionandrefurbishmentofthepavilionnextwinterwillhappen,givingusagreatnewfacility.

Meanwhile,ournewwomen’ssectionhasalsobeenveryactive.UndertheguidanceofourWomen&GirlsManager,SharonEyers,newlyappointedcaptainHelenMansellhasbeenbusyrecruitingandwealreadyhavearound30prospectivemembers.Wehaveaseriesoftournamentsagainstotherlocalwomen’steamsinthediaryforthissummerandhopetobeinapositiontoenteraproposednewI’Ansonwomen’sleaguenextyear.

Ontopofallthisofcourse,alltheusualpre-seasonpreparationsforwhatwillbeanotherverybusysummerhavebeengoingonaswell.Wehaveanewlyappointed1stXIcaptaininAlexBertola,freshfromsuccessinlastseason’sStevensCupFinal(picturedonthefront).Wearealsodelightedtobewelcominganewoverseasplayer/coachfromNewZealand,AngusHamilton.Ournewlypromoted2ndXIarerelishingthechallengeofDivision2oftheI’AnsonLeague,andourjuniorsectionisburstingattheseams,withwaitinglistsfornearlyeverysquad.

MEN’SSUNDAYCRICKETAsidefromleaguecricketonSaturdays,BlackheathfieldsatleastoneandoccasionallytwoteamsonSundaysduringtheseason.ThestandardofoppositiononSundaysvariesconsiderably,fromrelaxedandentertainingmatchesagainstfriendlylocalrivals,tohighlycompetitivefixturesagainstverystrongwanderingsides.ThismeansthatonSundaysweareabletoaccommodatecricketersofalmostanystandard;wetakeprideinthefactthateveryoneiswelcomeatBlackheath.Sundaysalsoofferagreatopportunityforsomeofourolderjuniorstohaveatasteofadultcricket.

WOMEN’SCRICKETForthefirsttimethisseason,wearefieldingawomen’steam,whichwillbeplayinginaseriesoftournamentsagainstotherlocalclubsonSundayafternoons.ThewomenwillbetrainingonThursdayeveningsatBlackheathfrom6.30-8pm.
