3 2010-2011 MISSION STATEMENT: THE SHELDON ARTS FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO THE PRESERVATION AND OPERATION OF THE HISTORIC SHELDON CONCERT HALL, AND IS DEDICATED TO ENRICHING THE GREATER ST. LOUIS REGION AND BEYOND WITH A WIDE RANGE OF MUSIC, VISUAL ARTS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, DIVERSITY AND EDUCATIONAL IMPACT. SEASON IN REVIEW THE SHELDON CONCERT HALL The 2010-2011 series kicked off with an all-star line-up of St. Louis musicians and arts professionals taking the stage to celebrate the opening of the first ever American Arts Experience-St. Louis festival. The 17-day event celebrated American arts in all genres — music, art, dance and drama — and included over 40 arts and culture organizations throughout St. Louis city and county. Singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin, 60 x 60 Dance and The Sheldon Chorale all contributed to the diverse American art forms represented in the festival! Other highlights of the season included the continuation of the Peter Martin Music series, with guest artists such as Christian McBride and Romero Lubambo; a special double bill of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Jon Cleary; the revival of The Sheldon Sessions, in collaboration with 88.1 KDHX, featuring Carolina Chocolate Drops; one of only a handful of performances in North America by guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin; the creation of The Sheldon Ballroom series featuring diverse local and national acts such as Jon Hardy and the Public and Pokey LaFarge; an 85 th birthday celebration for jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli; and amazing benefit concerts by Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman, Steve Tyrell and 2011 Gala artist John Pizzarelli. The Sheldon Notes From Home series continued to showcase the best in local music of all genres, featuring amazing local talent such as Denise Thimes, Rick Thum, Autumn’s Child, Brian Owens and many more. Non-profit organizations such as Nurses for Newborns, Community Women Against Hardship and the Mildred Thimes Foundation also benefitted from Notes From Home, holding successful fundraising concerts in conjunction with the series. THE SHELDON ART GALLERIES The Sheldon Art Galleries mounted two of their most prestigious exhibitions to date with the opening in Fall 2010 of Group f.64 and the Modernist Vision: Photographs by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Willard Van Dyke, and Brett Weston and Designing the City: An American Vision, both on loan from the Bank of America Art in our Communities program. Part of the American Arts Experience-St. Louis, the photography exhibitions were presented alongside a host of critically acclaimed exhibitions including Maturity and Its Muse: Celebrating Artists Over 70 and Uncommon Objects/Personal Views: The Collections of Rick Ege and John Foster .
