SeaSon in revieW

the sheLDon concerT hall

the 2010-2011 series kicked off

with an all-star line-up of st. Louis

musicians and arts professionals

taking the stage to celebrate the

opening of the first ever american

arts experience-st. Louis festival.

the 17-day event celebrated

american arts in all genres — music,

art, dance and drama — and included

over 40 arts and culture

organizations throughout st. Louis

city and county. singer-songwriter

shawn Colvin, 60 x 60 Dance and

the sheldon Chorale all contributed

to the diverse american art forms

represented in the festival!

other highlights of the season

included the continuation of the

Peter Martin Music series, with guest

artists such as Christian McBride and

romero Lubambo; a special double

bill of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band

with Jon Cleary; the revival of the

sheldon sessions, in collaboration

with 88.1 KDhX, featuring Carolina

Chocolate Drops; one of only a

handful of performances in north

america by guitar virtuoso John

McLaughlin; the creation of the

sheldon Ballroom series featuring

diverse local and national acts such

as Jon hardy and the Public and

Pokey LaFarge; an 85th birthday

celebration for jazz guitar legend

Bucky Pizzarelli; and amazing benefit

concerts by Lyle Lovett, randy

newman, steve tyrell and 2011

gala artist John Pizzarelli.

best in local music of all genres,

featuring amazing local talent

such as Denise thimes, rick thum,

autumn’s Child, Brian owens and

many more. non-profit organizations

such as nurses for newborns,

Community Women against

the sheldon art galleries mounted

two of their most prestigious

exhibitions to date with the opening

in Fall 2010 of group f.64 and the

Modernist vision: Photographs

by Ansel Adams, edward Weston,

imogen Cunningham, Willard

van Dyke, and brett Weston and

Designing the City: An American

vision, both on loan from the Bank

of america Art in our Communities

program. Part of the american

arts experience-st. Louis, the

photography exhibitions were

presented alongside a host of

critically acclaimed exhibitions

including Maturity and its Muse:

Celebrating Artists over 70 and

uncommon objects/Personal views:

The Collections of rick ege and John

Foster. the high-caliber exhibitions

continued with larry Fink: Attraction

and Desire-50 Years in Photography.

the major retrospective of work by

internationally known photo grapher

Larry Fink included gallery talks, a

collector’s fundraising event and a

student workshop.

additional notable exhibitions

included Max lazarus: Trier/St. louis/

Denver — A Jewish Artist’s Fate,

Colors of Hope: Artwork From

the Children’s Art village, Peter

Pranschke: The lonely rainbow

and vincentennial: The legacy of

vincent Price, a nationally recognized

exhibition about the st. Louis native,

co-presented by Cinema st. Louis.

the galleries also continued to

serve the community through a

variety of educational programs such

as tuesday evening and saturday

morning gallery talks and Master

Class Workshops for students, all

in support of the galleries’ mission

to nurture a love of the arts. all

programs and exhibitions were

offered free of charge.

eDuCationaL anD outreaCh prograMS

once again, over 20,000 young

people enjoyed sheldon educational

programs, with concerts featuring

jazz, folk, blues, classical, the music

of Lewis and Clark, and the american

musical. ron Carter, the director

of jazz studies at northern illinois

university, returned for a day of

workshops with top jazz students

from McKinley Jr. academy, Christian

Brothers College high school and

university City high school. over

850 children, coaches and parents

enjoyed a journey through the history

of blues music at the annual Cardinals

Care redbird rookies concerts.

gallery workshops included

photography workshops with

Jennifer silverberg and students

from oakville high school, and Larry

Fink with students from oakville and

Parkway north.

Music for Lifelong achievement

partnered with starbucks once again

to collect musical instruments for

st. Louis Public schools, and held

a special drive for Cuban students

in collaboration with the horns to

havana program in new york City,

garnering almost a full orchestra of

instruments!

Center Visionary awards, nine

network's Donnybash, and companies

such as nestle Purina, emerson,

st. Luke’s hospital, rubinBrown and

Chick-fil-a were just a few of the

events and corporations that utilized

the sheldon Concert hall, Ballroom,

Louis spiering room and Kemper

atrium. the excellent facilities and

staff proved once again why the

sheldon is one of st. Louis’ great

community resources.
