Club 27 basic concept

For my NMP I decided to work on a project that I would really enjoy doing not only because I like the medium that I am using but also because I am interested in the subject - celebrities, music, rock’n’roll lifestyle. Club 27 is a personal project aiming to pay tribute to some of the most famous musicians in history who died at the age of 27.

I decided to illustrate them in my own style and put their quotes about life & love around them so that the viewer can get a better insight into their life and thoughts and maybe understand them better.

Colour scheme

I decided to use black and dark red and no other colours because I wanted to to keep it simple. Black is for the darkness of the project, red for the edginess and class (or for blood - take it as you wish).

Research

The very first research that I did was about the concept of Club 27 and its members. Then I chose the 10 most famous and did more research about when and how they died. After this I decided to use only 5 of them - the most famous ones that everyone has heard of - Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse.

After choosing to work with them I started reading more about their personalities and gathered quotes by them about life, love and death.

The final stage of my research involved looking at illustrations that combine drawings and handwritten text.


Experimenting

My first attempt with the musicians’ illustrations was hand-drawn style but then I decided to go out of my comfort zone and do digital illustrations.

I illustrated the five musicians I had chosen and then came the difficult part - adding the type to the images.

I first tried doing it digitally but it looked a bit messy and was adviced to use less quotes and make them bigger. I was also adviced to try rendering it by hand and did experiment with it but at the end decided that it will look better if I just continue working on the digital version, so I removed some of the quotes and worked more on the ones that were left.


Final Outcomes

My final outcomes include 5 digitally illustrated portraits of the most famous Club 27 members.


Logo/Brand development

I created a logo that will later be used for the packaging and the website promoting the posters.

My initial idea was to give at an edgy music club look but then I decided to make it look more like a signature and keep it really rough.

Packaging

I created this simple packaging in order to be able to send the posters to client. The packaging is hard so that the posters don’t get damaged during shipping. It matches the red colour of the illustrations and the logo and it has the logo as an old stamp on it.


Website

There will be a single page simple website where people will be able to see the posters and order them.
