Steph Cameron

Released in 2017, Daybreak Over Jackson Street is the keenly-anticipated second album from Steph Cameron. The Saskatoon-based rootssinger/songwriter arrived on the scene like a bracinggust of fresh musical air with her 2014 debut recordSad-Eyed Lonesome Lady receiving unanimouslyenthusiastic reviews. “This is a monumental, brilliantalbum… heralds the crowning of a bright new talent,”declared Pop Matters in calling it the #1 Canadianalbum of 2014. No Depression termed it “a stunningdebut,” while Exclaim! noted that “Sad-EyedLonesome Lady delights from start to finish. StephCameron is the real deal.” The record also made the coveted Longlist for the prestigious Polaris Prize in 2015.

Cameron’s evocative voice and perceptive lyricscontinue to captivate, as does her evolving yet stillfluent acoustic guitar work. Prior to her debut album,Cameron’s performing background was primarily inbusking. She acknowledges that “entertaining isentirely different from singing and songwriting. Being a busker for so many years forced me to learnhow to captivate people with my music. Busking wasmy only form of income for most of my life, so therewas a lot riding on a good performance and sound.”

There is daybreak over Steph Cameron’s musicalcareer, and a bright and shining future surely lies ahead.

Highly recommended!

Sam Baker

We’re delighted to welcome back Sam Baker as hetours his fifth studio record, Land of Doubt.

Produced by Nashville’s Neilson Hubbard, the recordoffers a change in Baker’s usual instrumentation, ashe lays down his acoustic guitar, and plays insteadthe electric. Yet still he does not depart from thehaunting and melodic style that has mesmerizedcritics and fans of his previous records (mercy, prettyworld, cotton, say grace.)

“I don’t go for the bold or the pathos,” he says.“Those are both beautiful strains of Texas music, butit’s not what I do. I like the sonic that leans to Bachor Miles. There are a lot of long notes on the record.I like starkness; West Texas is stark. The land and skydon’t have accessories; the lines are big. The lines areclear.”

Perhaps Baker describes the his latest release best, “I wanted a cinematic feel, a mixture of sparsity andtension… And beauty…I always come back tobeauty on my records. That’s shorthand forsomething that's bigger than me.”

Always a sell-out at the SEAC, please book yourtickets early in order to avoid disappointment.

Described by critics as a "trad music supergroup",ZoDoMo is the latest highly acclaimed traditional Irishgroup to step into the limelight. The trio featuresthree of Ireland's eminent musicians, Zoë Conway, one of the country's most gifted virtuoso musicianswho is equally at home in both traditional Irish andclassical styles. Dónal Lunny, popularly regarded ashaving been central to the renaissance of Irish musicover the last three decades and Máirtín O'Connor, a master musician whose dexterity and innovation has won him worldwide acclaim.

"ZoDoMo achieves the near impossible: capturing the energy of a live performance in studio, fuelled by a heady (and deliciously unpredictable) mix oftraditional and spikily original tunes, along with asmattering of covers. The title tells it like it is: In FullSail – Faoi Lán Seol is a magical snapshot of threemusicians flying fast and high on the momentum they have conjured with apparent effortless ease."Irish Times

Travelling to picturesque Auvers-sur-Oise, hemeets the people who knew the painter during his finaldays. This visually meticulous and mesmerising film revolvesaround the life of the great traditional Irish singer, Joe Heaney. The stylised black-and-white picture, obscuring the border between documentary andfiction, is a cinematic ballad that invites viewers to join the enigmatic, talented and idiosyncratic artist onhis dramatic life journey; along the way we also get asense of the difficult yet humble life of the people ofIreland over the course of last century.

The film takes us to Connemara and the village ofCarna, Joe Heaney’s birthplace, and continues toaccompany Joe on his travels. Launch of Exhibitionby Michael Lodge &Alison O’Grady

‘Ireland, moods and moments’

From his studio in Drogheda, Michael Lodge specialisesin portrait and landscape using oils, pastels, polymerresin and bronze. “My Landscapes are based on actualscenes, but the lighting ,colour scheme and mood ofthe paintings are derived to a large extent frommemory. I am particularly interested in representingwater in its many variations. In sculpture I seek tocapture the character of the subject, while at the sametime achieving a first rate likeness. As I am now in mylate sixties I can call upon decades of experience inpainting and sculpture. As a result I find that my workis more creative and fluid than ever before.”

Alison O’Grady is an illustrator, graphic designer andart educator. From 1984 to 1989, O’Grady attendedBalbriggan Community College and is a past pupil ofMichael Lodge. She continued her studies and holdsqualifications in Design and Art Education. Since 2007, O’Grady has taught art, locally, nationally andinternationally. Presently, she teaches art in Manama,Bahrain. O’Grady’s work is primarily the result of herdesire to draw and sketch; it is both a discipline and a passion. She is not confined to one subject area, preferring to vary her work and media to expressemotion and capture moments in time.

Michael & Alison’s exhibition is open daily from 10amto 4.30pm and will run until the 1st week in April.

e Lowest Pair

Rarely will you hear such beautiful American rootsmusic so perfectly performed.

Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee have foundthemselves in the premier league after gaining areputation as one of the most original old-timeinfluenced duos working the US circuit. The duo first combined in 2013 and quickly established a bigStateside following. They had a triumphant UK debut(one of the main visiting attractions flown in for theShetland Folk Festival and front cover exposure onthe programme of Edinburgh’s TradFest too). Afterthe release of two albums in 2016, AmericanaUKcalled them “a true joy,” while Acoustic magazinesaid they were “incredibly atmospheric.” LonesomeHighway (Ireland) has described the pair as “a musical marriage made in heaven.”

Monoprinting is a technique by which oneproduces unique artworks through simple printingmethods, easily mastered. Yanny Petters will guideparticipants through the process which she uses toproduce nature prints.

Nature print was employed before etchingtechniques were developed to illustrate plants formedicinal purposes. One of the earliest natureprints is of a Sage leaf printed by Leonardo DaVinci. The artist uses pressed leaves and plants, applies ink to these and transfers them to specialpaper. Yanny has been exploring the technique to create her own style of print, layering the design to give depth and variety.

Her exhibition ‘Hedgerows’ will be displayed in our Easter Snow Gallery from April 16th until thebeginning of June.

“With each successive album, Luka Bloom digs deeperand gazes wider… he is on top form.” The Irish Times

2016 Review of ‘Frugalisto’

With a poet's heart and a rockster's soul, Luka Bloom isregarded as one of Ireland's most respectedcontemporary folk artists, having produced over 20albums since the 1970s, Bloom continues to push theboundaries of what his music can do. A masterinterpreter, Bloom has continued to balance originalsongs with reinventions of tunes by a diverse range ofsongwriters. Like many who write songs, Luka'sorchestra of choice is the guitar. What makes his careera little different is his constant search for a new voicewithin the guitar. The guitar is the landscape on whichthe song is created, and he is forever probing thatlandscape for new inspiration. No effects, no gadgets.Time, effort and a whole lot of love bring forth newvoicings within the instrument, and bit by bit, the songscome to life. And eventually they fly, bringing Luka withthem to be heard in Byron Bay, San Francisco, Hamburgor even Doolin.

Almost 40 years since recording his first album, LukaBloom comes to the SEAC with his latest album,'Frugalisto'.
