Established in 1901, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) is the principal subsidiary of the CLP Group
(CLP). CLP Power operates a vertically-integrated electricity supply business in Hong Kong which includes
generation, transmission and distribution and serves 80 percent of the territorys population.
CLP Powers history is inextricably linked with that of Hong Kong. In the mid-1920s, when Hong Kongs
economy was hard hit by the Canton-Hong Kong strike, the Kadoorie family remained confident in the
future of Kowloon and th e New Territories. Sir Elly Kadoorie became a major investor of CLP in 1928 and
participated in the companys policy making. From providing a reliable electricity supply and meetingthe needs of fast-growing manufacturing industries during the post-war years to helping Kowloon and the
New Territories move into a new stage of electrification and development, CLP Power has played a major role
in powering the city for more than a century.
In guiding CLP Power forward, the Kadoorie family still follows the traditional values of previous generations
with their businesses in Hong Kong. These values include being forward looking, financially prudent, showing
integrity in business dealings, and having a sense of obligation to society. The Kadoorie family is also engaged
in a host of civic and philanthropic activities which benefit people across the city.
CLP Power has been supplying Hong Kong with the reliable power for more than 110 years. We are committed
to continuing to light up our city and to serving each of our customers to the very best of our ability.

CLP Powers ability to supply power reliably and consistently
is at the heart of our success. It is a task that requires
dedication, professionalism, teamwork and state-of-the-art
technology at all levels of the company.
Cutting Edge Generation Technology
The three power stations operated by CLP Power feature
high quality generation infrastructure that employs some
of the latest, most efficient and environmentally friendly
technology.
Castle Peak Power Station in Tuen Mun was commissioned
in phases during the 1980s, and now has a capacity of
4,108MW. It burns coal as a primary fuel, but can also
use oil and natural gas as alternatives. With the Emissions
Control Project for reducing sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
oxide emissions coming into effect in phases from 2010,
together with stringent emissions management measures,
Castle Peak Power Station is one of the cleanest coal-fired
power stations in the world.

Black Point Power Station, also in Tuen Mun, is one of the
worlds largest gas-fired combined cycle power stations. CLP
Power became the first electricity supplier in Hong Kong to use
natural gas for power generation when it went into operation in
1996. The plant now has a capacity of 2,500MW.
Black Point Power Station has been undergoing an intensive
upgrade since 2012 in order to receive gas from the Second
West-East pipeline, a new source of natural gas from
mainland China, opening a new chapter in CLP Powers
drive for clean power generation.
Pennys Bay Power Station in eastern Lantau Island provides
reserve power to deal with both planned and unexpected
outages of generating units. The 300MW power station
provides quick-start support in case of emergencies and to
meet peak demand. Its diesel oil-fired units can come online
within nine minutes.
CLP Power is contracted to buy 70% of the power produced
by the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station.
Commissioned in 1994, the station is the first large-scale
commercial nuclear power station in mainland China and
has two pressurised water reactor generating units with a
capacity of 1,968MW.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Working for a Greener Future
Our business, by its nature, has an inherent impact on the
environment. That is why we are extremely serious about
our responsibility to seek out sources of cleaner power
generation and to manage the environmental impact of
our operations. Over the years, we have adopted the
industrys best practices on operational efficiency, safety and
environmental performance.
Facing the future challenges, we will continue to work along
the Energy Vision we outlined towards more sustainable
energy in the next decade. This will guide us towards
delivering a more reliable, cleaner energy generation through
three approaches: Establishing closer energy integration with
mainland China, moving to cleaner fuels, and encouraging
greater energy efficiency. We understand and share the
communitys aspiration for improved air quality and a low
carbon city. We are committed to playing our part in this
important cause. Our goal is to work closely with all parties
to create a greener tomorrow.

Combating Climate Change
CLP Power is a pioneer in Hong Kong in adopting measures
to manage its impact on the environment. Since the
mid-1970s, CLP Power has adopted a fuel diversification
strategy. We are also the first utility company in Hong Kong
to introduce natural gas.
We have been using coal, natural gas and nuclear power
to meet Hong Kongs demand for electricity, enabling

us to provide electricity in a reliable and environmentally
responsible manner. Over the years, the use of natural gas
and nuclear power has helped CLP Power reduce emissions
from our operations.
The Emissions Control Project at the coal-fired Castle Peak
Power Station has also further improved CLP Powers
environmental performance. Despite an increase of more
than 80% in electricity demand in the past 20 years,
our emissions have reduced by more than 80% over the
same period.

The Nuclear Benefit
Nuclear power is a clean and r eliable energy source which
produces virtually no emissions. We believe that continuing
nuclear energy programmes will be part of the global effort to
address climate change.
The Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station supplies
around one third of CLP Powers electricity supply and has
proved to be reliable and affordable. Importing nuclear energy
to Hong Kong has helped to cut carbon dioxide emissions in
the city by over 100 million tonnes over the last two decades.
Promoting Renewable Energy
We recognise our responsibility in the collective effort to combat
climate change and we are constantly looking for new ways to
reduce emissions from energy generation. The increased use of
renewable energy will help achieve our targets. Our renewable
energy efforts are not limited to electricity generation. They
include supporting the public in renewable energy projects and
connecting them to the grid.
Town Island
Hong Kongs first commercial-scale standalone renewable
energy system is a two-phase project on Town Island.
The system, which CLP Power began planning in 2008 and
completed in 2012, has a generating capacity of up to
200kW which is sufficient to meet the islands energy needs.
Grid-connected Projects
CLP Power has been providing technical advice and
assessment services to customers to facilitate their
connection of small-scale renewable energy facilities to our
grid since 2003.

A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY 20 21
A COMMITMENT TOTHE COMMUNITY
Hong Kong is Our Home
The success of CLP Power as a business is closely alig ned
with the well-being of the community we serve. We deliver
reliable and safe electricity at a reasonable price, operate
in a responsible way, and contribute to the community of
Hong Kong.
Giving to those in Need
Our community commitment initiatives focus on three areas:
The environment, youth and education, and community
well-being. We work closely with local non-governmental
organisations and community groups to identify evolving
societal needs and to devise programmes that will make
a difference to peoples lives and have a positive, long-
lasting impact. Over the years, our community commitment
activities putting our skills, expertise and resources to good
use have improved the quality of life of many people.

Key community programmes of CLP Power include the
Hotmeal Canteen which is jointly organised with the Hong
Kong Council of Social Service and the Baptist Oi Kwan
Social Service. The Hotmeal Canteen provides nourishing,
dietician-supervised hot meals for a token price to the needy
in Sham Shui Po. The programme also offers job counselling,
health advice sessions and exercise classes to help
participants lead a healthier lifestyle and to help them regain
confidence by establishing a new social network for them.
CLP Power is committed to Energy Efficiency and
Conservation (EE&C). We promote EE&C through education
and have introduced a series of tools and programmes to help
our domestic and commercial customers save energy. We
also install energy efficient LED light bulbs and share useful
tips on EE&C and electrical safety with the elderly through our
CLP volunteers caring visits and EE&C talks.

Employee Volunteering
Employee involvement is critical to the success of our
community commitment programmes. CLP Powers volunteer
team is one of the largest corporate volunteer teams in Hong
Kong. It was started in 1994 by a group of frontline staff on
a voluntary basis who provided free re-wiring services to
underprivileged elderly people. Today, it comprises more than
800 employees and their family members.
In recent years, the scope of voluntary services has expanded
to include the provision of free English lessons for new
migrants and underprivileged children, the training of young
and elderly volunteer leaders, eco-tours, workshops on
electrical safety and energy efficiency, caring visits, and a
range of other activities for the underprivileged and the infirm.
