Congratulations to Elisabeth Bovee of the Hayfork Timberjacks 4-H. She found the March hidden clover!! If you’re new to Trinity County 4-H, we wanted to let you know that we have a “Hidden Clover” contest which consists of finding the 4-H clover hidden somewhere in each issue of the Cloverleaf newsletter. It will never be hidden on either the front or back pages, but WILL be hidden in some unexpected places and is usually very small! So keep your eyes open, and call the 4-H Office (530)628-5495, or email [email protected], and tell us where you found the clover. Your name will be included in the monthly drawing for a cool prize! By the way, the hidden clover will look like this: This is only an example...the hidden one is SMALLER!

2011 STATE 4-H FIELD DAY MAY 28, 2011 AT UC DAVIS 8:00AM TO 6:00PM

Since 2002, the State 4-H Field Day takes place annually on the Satur-day of Memorial Day weekend at the UC Davis campus from 8:00am until 6:00pm. The event is open to all 4-H members, volunteers, staff, and parents. Between 1,000 and 1,400 people attend the event. The event has a ‘picnic’ feel as people bring chairs and socialize for the day on the Wellman Hall east lawn. The State 4-H Office provides coordi-nation and facility support. Each contest and activity is coordinated by a group of 4-H staff, volunteers, and youth.

During the event, 4-H members may participate in a variety of contests. Some contests require pre-qualification and/or pre-registration. Some are open to all during the event. Here is a list of some of the fun events you can expect to witness or take part in at State 4-H Field Day: • State Presentation Day (pre-qualification/pre-registration required) • State 4-H Fashion Revue (pre-qualification/pre-registration required) Volunteer judges provide feedback

on 4-H members’ clothing and chosen accessories using criterion-based rubrics. Other activities open to ALL members include service, craft, judging and fashion activities, county displays and a fashion show.

• State 4-H Plant Science Contest organized into 3 parts: judging, plant identification and written test. The 4 highest-ranking senior members qualify to participate in the national contest.

• State 4-H Photography Contest: (pre-registration required) 4-H members may submit two photographs in various categories. Contact John Trammel at [email protected] for more information.

• State 4-H Film Festival (requires pre-registration) Provides a venue for teams of 4-H members to show-case their films.

• State Interview Contest (pre-registration required) Before this contest, 4-H members select a mock job and develop a cover letter and resume. At the event, 4-H members are interviewed and evaluated by 3 judges using a rubric.

• Festival of Science Curious about how things work? Want to know more about something? University Scientists will answer your questions! Provide your question ahead of the event and we will try to find the right scientists to provide answers to the most commonly asked questions. Contact: Steven Worker at [email protected] or Kali Trzesniewski at [email protected].

• 4-H Horse Classic Equine Educational Contests: these contests provide an opportunity for youth to gain knowledge and skills and be recognized for their efforts. Save the Date for the SET EXPO~ April 30th, 2011

The SET planning team will host the 3rd annual SET EXPO at Redwood Acres in Humboldt County on April 30th, 2011. This will be a great oppor-tunity to showcase an area of your project work. If you would like ideas of things to do, call the Humboldt County 4-H Office. There is LOTS of cur-

riculum and FUN hands-on science related to your project work. There will be numerous ways to be involved and there is a long list of benefits for members. Besides a large array of life skills, lead-ership and citizenship that will result, members can count the following areas (depending on areas of involvement) on their record books: Project Exhibit ~ Event Attended ~ Leadership ~ Citizenship.

Make plans now to be involved! Make SET the theme of your 4-H Presentation and share the infor-mation again on April 30th. Plan to host a table with one hands-on activity. Plan a display to show-case SET in your project. Host a petting zoo or a hand washing station. Connect SET to what you are already doing. We had amazing 4-H work displayed last year. If each club or project group picks just one small thing to do, the event will be a BIG SUCCESS!!!

4-H State Leadership Conference July 28 - 31, 2011 at University of California, Davis

The 4-H State Leadership Conference brings together high school youth from across California in a four-day leadership training, networking, and learning ex-perience. The conference provides advanced leadership training and is an opportu-nity for 4-H members to network and share ideas with other 4-Hers from across the state. The conference focuses on providing high school youth with experiential education on leadership development, civic engagement, college admissions and other 4-H project areas.

Youth delegates gain exposure to the campus by living in the residence halls, eat-ing in the dining commons, and participating in educational sessions, many of which are taught by UC faculty and staff.

The conference is planned by a team of high school 4-H members and adult advisors. Working in strong youth-adult part-nership, the team designs the educational, recreational and logistical components of the conference. Participants: Califor-nia high-school-aged 4-H members (14-19 years old)

4-H POLICY FROM THE STATE 4-H OFFICE: PLEASE READ Club Requirements: 4-H Clubs must have a 4-H charter. The 4-H Charter formally recog-nizes a group's affiliation with 4-H and grants the group permission to use the 4-H Name and Emblem. It provides the permission for the 4-H club to be a subsidiary of USDA National 4-H

Headquarters, University of California, and eligibility for federal tax exemption status. All 4-H clubs, groups and committees that use the 4-H Name and Emblem and handle finances and have a checkbook must be chartered. This includes accepting donations and fundraising. To maintain charter status all 4-H clubs must meet the following requirements:

• Have at least 5 members consisting of 3 different families.

• Have at least 2 adult volunteer leaders • Constitution and Bylaws approved by club members and 4-H staff

• Be organized with 4-H youth officers

• Meet Affirmative Action guidelines • Use the county 4-H office address as the club/group’s official banking address. • Complete the Annual Financial Report and file it with the County 4-H Office by the county

due date.
