Living on the Edge: “Becoming a Romans 12 Christian”

It has been a few years that I have been a pastor here (I can say that now) and I wanted to explain the process that has been led by our God in our congregational education. This spiritual growth focus that we are embarking on is not just another Bible Study. We have been on a journey together and this is where in that journey we are now. This is, of course, true for each of you as individuals and as a congregation and this extends beyond my years here. But, I have seen us grow together spiritually in the time I have been pastor here and I am attempting to lead us to this next step.

This study’s focus takes an in-depth look at the 12th Chapter of St Paul’s letter to the Romans. It is Paul’s summary of what a mature follower of Jesus looks like. It is Paul’s synthesis of Jesus’ teachings on what it means to follow Him as His disciple. Over this time I have discovered that engaging the congregation in such a focus is one of the best ways that we, as an entire group, can grow in our faith and “Christlike-ness.” It gives every member, friend and acquaintance of our congregation an opportunity to participate!

This is an “all-congregational, all-church family” focus, through the sermons preached on Sundays, at our Sunday Bible Study and in our Christ Light Small Group home studies. The study book is now available for pick up, or to be mailed to every member and friend of the congregation.

Small group Bible studies are developed to give every individual an opportunity to fellowship with fellow Christians, to pray for one another, and to share insights with one another about God’s transforming Word. And, all these materials are available to all people connected to us and can be obtained in order to share them with neighbors, other family members, and even friends who live all across the country. What a great way to share your faith and what a great way to encourage your family and friends to grow spiritually in Christ.

The goal is that the whole of our church family and our large network of family and friends will be instructed and empowered by God’s Word so that we more increasingly experience His super-natural work of transforming us to be like Jesus. Dare to live on the edge. Dare to be a part of r-12. Dare to invite others to journey with you!

Blessings,Pastor Mark

The September workday was held on the 14th. I would like to thank Tom King for his help and support.

There will not be a workday in October due to other activities. The next workday will be November 9th at 8 a.m. We will need to remove the tumble weeds from the back lot and a tree from the parking lot. Other items that need attention are the cleaning of the windows, and sanding and painting the handrails. If you would like to help or you know of an area that needs some attention, please feel free to join us or please contact me for more information.

We also have some projects that can be completed at any time, if you have the expertise or know someone who does.

1. Replace the stolen bollards in front of the PG& E transformer.2. Install expanded metal over the condenser on the large Church AC unit, vandals have been damaging it.3. Repair the cement and the broken tile in the front of the Church.4. Install some benches around the Planter between the Church and the Administration building.5. Building a new storage area.

We also have some major projects that are either in process or will be started in the future. Most of these projects will be contracted to outside companies, but we need people to head the projects and obtain proposals and bids. If you are interested, please contact Roy.

Wonder Window School BoardChuck Jordin ~ Chairman

Wonder Window still has openings for new students for this school year, so let your friends and family know we have room for their children. We currently have a full time equivalent enrollment of 34.44; we need a FTE of 46 to make our budget. Wonder Window has a great reputation in our community. We offer a loving and caring learning environment and provide an opportunity for the students to meet Jesus in a personal way.The new playground equipment is on order and is scheduled to arrive at our campus by the first of October. We have had two workdays so far, and volunteers have removed the old equipment and the cushioning material to get ready for the new installation. We plan to have the equipment installed the first week in October. We will need help after the installation to return the cushioning material to the play area and we will let you know when and how you can help.We give thanks to all of you for your continued prayers for the staff and students in our preschool. Your prayers for our ministry and the effort of our dedicated staff will insure continued success for Wonder Window.

Use this opportunity as an outreach and invite your

neighbors and friends for a wunderbar time.

Kristy Sturz, Chair SAM Board

OperationChristmas Child

How do you count gospel opportunities? Operation Christmas Child counts them by the number of shoeboxes distributed. The reason they associate shoeboxes with gospel opportunities is that with each shoebox gift, children receive a book called The Greatest Gift of All. If you are interested in sending shoeboxes this year, here are some ideas to use throughout the year to gather your supplies.

- Shop at after holiday sales & clearance sales (any holiday)- Look for and buy “back to school” supplies on sale (usually in late July or August)- Use your resources: unused hotel soap

bars, freebie pencils, etc.

Photo DirectoryAfter months of planning, the time has come! Photos for our new directory will be taken in the church library October 17 through October 19. There are two ways to sign up. CHILDREN’S CENTERMs. Charla Herider

DirectorDear Wonder Window and Lutheran Church of Prayer family, It’s October! It’s autumn! I love this time of year. God blesses us each fall with cooler weather, vivid colors, and occasional rain. The valley will temporarily green up before the fields turn golden and then brown. We have Thanksgiving to look forward to, Christmas presents to purchase and most of all, we have the continued love of our Lord and Savior. He never leaves nor forsakes us. What a blessing to not only know…but experience His love. We have many fun and exciting opportunities coming up this month. We will start things off with the LCoP Oktoberfest on October 12th. This is a great time to come out, eat some fabulous German food and meet fellow parents as well as members of Lutheran Church of Prayer. There will be activities for the children, baskets to raffle, and a time to sit and just relax while enjoying the cooler weather that fall brings. It begins at noon and ends at 5:00. Tickets are $10 for adults and just $3 for a kid’s

meal. In addition, there are pretzels and beer for purchase. Come and enjoy the food and fellowship. For tickets, please sign up on the sign-up sheets which are located in each classroom.Oktoberfest will be followed by PICTURE DAY on Wednesday, October 16th. Lil Angels will be here taking your child’s photo. They do a remarkable job capturing your child’s smile and personality. These are not the “dress up” pictures they shoot in the spring so please dress your child in a bright outfit for their photo. The owner, Ms. Lori, will personally be shooting the pictures this year. If your child normally attends on Tuesday/Thursday, we ask that you bring them in early on picture day so that they can also have their photo taken. Look for more details soon.Wubba Wubba night will be held on Friday, October 18th. Be sure to sign up no later than Wednesday, October 16th so I know how much food to prepare for dinner. Our last Wubba Wubba night was so much fun. The time flew by and the children still weren’t ready to go home when parents arrived just before 10:00 p.m. Time truly does fly when you’re having fun!Trunk or Treat is coming up on Saturday, October 26th. This is a great way to provide your children with a safe Halloween experience. Dress up! Come on down and see how the cars, members of Lutheran Church of Prayer and staff of Wonder Window are also dressed up for this special event. And, because we like to have fun, our annual Harvest Carnival will be held on Thursday, October 31st. Your child can wear his or her favorite costume to school that day.

Please send a change of clothing so that when we’re finished with our fun, we can be in play clothes. We will have face painting, a bounce house, a pumpkin ring toss and many more fun games to play. Please watch for sign-up sheets in your child’s classroom. We will need candy, small toys and parent volunteers for this event. While all of these whirlwind activities are taking place….we still have learning to do. The themes this month are Fire Prevention and Safety, Autumn Changes and Colors, Bugs, and Food and Harvest. In addition the younger classes will learn numbers: 4, 5 and 6, the colors: orange and black, the shape will be a square and the letters are D, E and F. If your child is in Pre-K or Kinder, please see your teacher’s blurb for their schedule. Our Bible curriculum will cover The Giving of the Law (the 10 Commandments), Building the Tabernacle, The Battle of Jericho, Ruth and Samuel as a Boy.Be sure to watch for sign-up sheets, notices on the glass door and information on your sign in/out sheets. We wouldn’t want anyone to miss something! God’s blessings on each of you,Charla Herider

Parents, Grandparents, please save the day to volunteer and participate in our Harvest Carnival which will be held on Thursday, October 31st. Hope to see you all here on that day! Have a blessed month!

Ms. Rachel’s ClassIt’s hard to believe that fall us upon us. The 3’s have been busy learning our alphabet, numbers, colors and shapes. We have also worked hard memorizing our weekly memory verses. We would like to thank Marilyn Wilson for coming into our classroom and playing her guitar and singing with us. We really enjoyed her and hope she can return. We are also looking forward to our Annual Harvest Carnival that takes place during

school hours on October 31st. The children really enjoy it and have so much fun! Please keep those who are ill or injured in your prayers. God bless everyone!Ms. Stephanie’s Class

and Kaitlyn on the 25th! Have a safe Halloween.

Miss Charla’s ClassWOW…what readers the Kinder Kids are becoming. The children have learned more than 30 sight words and they are eager to learn more. They are putting together simple sentences and are sounding out more words on a daily basis. They have learned tally marks, and the number before and after a specific number. We’ll work on the numbers 1-10 (including their spellings) through October and begin to tackle the teens in November. We continue to work on our Math Journals and we will begin journaling mid-October. Please be sure to sign up for our Harvest Carnival. More details to come. Thank you to Mrs. Ryder for the fun owl projects you have given to the classroom. The boys certainly like to work on them when we have free time. Please continue to practice the sight word cards daily with your child. It truly helps them learn the words which will help once we begin to journal. May the Lord bless you in all you endeavor this month!

Second Star to the Right

Wonder Window is asking for everyone to Stand Up to Cancer by supporting Second Star to the Right. Second Star to the Right was originally founded in January of 2010 by Briana Schechter and her sister, Rachelle Griffith, to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and for local families battling pediatric cancer.  Rachelle’s daughter, Kayla Blair, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as AT/RT at the tender age of 21 months old and was treated at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Sadly, she lost her battle onJanuary 10, 2009.  Watching Kayla fight so hard against this devastating disease gave Rachelle, Briana, and other members of their family the strength to continue fighting for children like Kayla.  Though Kayla lost her battle at only 27 months old, her family felt an overwhelming obligation to fight back against childhood cancer in every way possible.  This organization was set up to not only raise funds for research, but to also assist local and regional families on emotional and financial levels. Beginning November 3rd, jars will be available to fill up with your spare change. The jars are golden as this is the color for Childhood Cancer Awareness. We’re asking that anyone who takes a jar add their spare change and return the jars to Wonder Window by December 15th. The monies raised will be used to purchase grocery store and gas gift cards for local families whose children have been affected by cancer. These come in handy as most of our Little Warriors go north and south for their treatments. We thank you for your

support of these precious children.

Thank YouBill and I wish to once again thank all of you for your continued prayers, meals, cards, and visits. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to need so many prayers for so many things.

We know God has a plan and we trust Him implicitly for healing and strength. God bless you all.Bill & Carolyn Schaefer
