EXAMPLE CASE CLOUD MIGRATION

14

• From hosting on premises Datacenters to the Cloud and start using PAAS-capabilities from cloud providers

• Redeployment to Cloud is the preferred way to migrate to Cloud in order to benefit as much as possible from Cloud SAAS, PAAS and cloud native components in order to meet the goals of the Cloud move (variability, agility).

Situation

• Applications need to be refactored to be able to utilize the native cloud PAAS and SAAS components.

Complication

• Moving on-premise VM’s to public Cloud VM’s in a highly automated manner.

ManualToolLegend: Limitation*

*Due to bandwidth

Note:Replication already starts before change window. No impact on running VM

Example cutover weekend for a business critical application: Manual versus Tooling

Example for a Business Critical Application:

- Change window is from 01:00-06:00 on Sunday.

- Application Production environment consists of 4 VMs.

- Each VM contains 500 GB of data.

- Available bandwidth is 1 GBps (100 MB/s).

- The migration of a single VM (500 GB) takes more than 1 hour, utilizing the full available bandwidth.

CLOUD MIGRATION IN ACTION

18

Use of tooling leads to a number of benefits

• Automation:

- Less human errors

- Decrease the cutover risk

- No impact on the source VM before the migration

• Increased number of VM migrations during change window:

- Live synchronization before change window

- Decreased downtime during cutover

Tool Tool

High-Level Steps to be performed:1. Create connectivity between both sites

(using VPN connection over WAN)2. Install tooling on top of the hypervisor

(VMware) and on a VM (Cloud) 3. Define Migration Groups and setup

replication4. Perform migration (downtime)

Global Communications, Media & Technology Company

Situation Accenture’s Approach Results

• Distributed L2 RUN operations, limited use to

processes. Limited scope for consolidation and

standardization.

• The Client’s Global Infrastructure was managed by an

internal team, with a distributed Geo-centric

governance structure and with discrete processes,

limited use of structured CMDB, service catalogue and

associated service levels and KPIs.

• Limited usage of SOPs, Run Books with multiple

service desk tools and poorly configured monitoring

tools with no centralized event and alert monitoring

mechanism

• Created & Introduced service management processes for

managing and delivery the L2 operations of Infrastructure

• Same team supporting the Infrastructure of all

geographies leveraging on the standard processes

• Lowered the overall cost by leveraging offshore for the

RUN operations

• The retained client’s organization can focus on New IT

and NGDC landscape

• Due to lack of documentation, we created and delivered

detailed RUN Books for each service lines

• Reduced late defect identification by 50% generating

estimated savings of >€2m

• Improved soft skills of the IT Integration team. Scores

increased from 70% to 77% and stakeholder complaints

significantly reduced

• Cross trained Development resources on multiple

delivery phases & technologies, increasing sprint

velocity with 10%

• Billing Operation’s preventive health checks across the

E2E process and services resulting in less incidents

• Infrastructure industrialized change process resulted in

>100 ticket categories standardized (templates and

work instructions)

• 94% of all SLA’s in the past 6 months have been on

target or above

Accenture has set the foundations to reach the next level of Operational Excellence, introducing several improvements on processes, skills & technology.

Financial Services

Accenture is teaming with the client to help create a highly automated private cloud, preparing and moving applications to this landscape, and transforming the way of working while introducing DevOps

Situation Accenture’s Approach Results

• The client manages financial products, where significant

change is expected in the coming years. Agility, speed,

reduction of cost are necessary to implement change and

to stay competitive

• Transformation centered around business value streams

• Integrated planning for program streams, using both agile

and waterfall methodologies where these fit best

• Ensure value by introducing KPIs and benefits monitoring

early; ensure the business are own the transformation and

results

• Embed cultural awareness and change to instill new way of

working

• The case is in the starting phase

• Analysis phase has led to insights on the significance and

risk profiles of the transformation, both from technology and

people perspectives

Global Communications, Media & Technology Company

Accenture assesses a Private Cloud strategy to realize cost savings and improve the quality of service

Situation Accenture’s Approach Results

• A major Dutch telecommunications company has set

the ambition to focus on major cost reductions and

quality improvements for its existing IT infrastructure.

Therefore the operational IT organization has set an

objective to significantly reduce its TCO to adhere to

these ambitions

• At the same time the IT organization has also been

working on defining the “new” IT infrastructure to which

IT operations have to operate on. As part of the “new”

the Private Cloud is chosen as the way forward

• The challenge is to bring these two tracks together

assuring that the existing landscape will land on the

“new” infrastructure while achieving their financial

targets for the client

• The client requested Accenture to conduct an assessment in which Accenture collaborated closely together with the client to come to the desired results.

• A structured approach was followed by Accenture to cover all required topics:• A current state review was done of the current client

situation in which infrastructure services, operational tooling, service delivery organization were evaluated. At the same also the a cost baseline was established to obtain a detailed understanding of the current IT costs, the cost components and underlying structure

• From the current state a key requirements were defined for the Private Cloud with regards to the data center services, infrastructure, tools and organization

• Based on the target state multiple migration options were explored to come to a Private Cloud migration strategy

• The current cost baseline, Private Cloud costs and the migration transformation costs were all included in a business case in which the entire transformation was calculated

• The assessment was successfully delivered to the client

in which answers were provided for the challenges they

were facing

• Based on findings of the current state review and the

target state definition a migration strategy with multiple

migration options and their business cases were

delivered to the client

• All business cases turned out to be favorable for the

client in which TCO reductions can be achieved

• The migration strategy with multiple options allowed the

client to choose which option they wanted to pursue.

• Preparations are currently undergoing for a major

transformation at the client in which the Private Cloud

will be realized and where their existing IT infrastructure

will be migrated to

Public Services

Accenture implemented and operated a private data analytics research platform for the client in AWS Cloud

Situation Accenture’s Approach Results

• The client had a requirement for a data analytics research

platform that enables them to perform analysis on their

dataset containing personal information without disclosing

the data to the researchers.

• The platform was required to be ready for use for the

research project quickly, which could not be realized by the

client’s internal IT organization.

• Personal data could not be loaded onto a shared analytics

platform

• Analyze and design the security requirements

• Design the platform, leveraging AWS VPC to setup a

private platform

• Implementation of the AWS components and servers that

for the platform

• Support the platform from the research project in a DevOps

way

• Cost efficient, cloud hosted, data analytics research

platform based on relevant security standards

• Implementation in a fraction of the time it would take the

client to setup this platform

• Operations integrated with the research project
