RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up
Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was
inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher
Confucius who said: "It is better to light a single
candle, than to sit and curse the darkness."
"There are so many problems in the world, so many
people who need help. Many people say, 'There's
nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing.
Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district
governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014
International Assembly in San Diego, California.
"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a
candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one.
Together, we light up the world," said Huang, who is a member of the
Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.
"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said. "You know where you are strong, you know what
your community needs, and you know how you can help."

District Governor Annie Steijn (RC of Benoni) was inducted
at the 4th District Annual Conference held at The Ranch Hotel,
Polokwane on 15 June 2014.
Annie endorsed the Light Up Rotary theme and added that every
Rotarian, Interact and Rotaract Members, Rotary Anns and the Friends
of Rotary Make A Difference - and that as a result, we are all MAD!
And she is right!
Our members and our friends need to Light Up the lives of hundreds of
people who need us, our experience, knowledge and dedication. No
matter what the project, deed or service we tender, we need to make a
difference in their lives.
The more members we have, the more we can achieve. No matter how small or large your project is,
everything we do counts.
Enjoy the year ahead and have lots of fun and fellowship too!
A New Rotary year begins….

Rhett Gardener reports…………. I attended on the Mamelodi East SAPS station on 3 June to see Sgt Nozizwe Gwebu with Constable Katlego Mmela. There was a cold front and it was bitterly cold. I handed over the Rotary e-Club of SA D9400 blankets that I had collected from Liana. Sgt Gwebu was, on behalf of the Children's' Shelter so very grateful. The gift could not have been more timely! Cst Mmela took the attached picture of the handover in front of the Police station. Sgt Gwebu undertook to send pictures of the children in the Court- sanctioned "place of safety' with the Rotary gift.
Rotary be praised - Rotary makes a difference.

EXHIBITION DIPLAY
There were 12 exhibitors at the 4th
annual conference at The Ranch and
our display was excellent….well done
to Annemarie and Trevor (and I am
sure that Hans helped as well) with
putting it up.
Conference delegates were amazed at
the number of brilliant projects that we
have undertaken.
PDG Shirley Downie was nominated by Pres. Kanthan Pillay for
the Council of Legislation Representative position. The clubs
voted and the results were announced at Discon. Shirley will represent
D9400 and PDG Frances Callard is the alternative representative.
The COL demands a lot of work before the final meeting in April 2016,
in Chicago where 536 district representatives meet and deliberate on
all the proposals made worldwide.
Clubs are invited to make suggestions of how to do things differently
and if the District agrees to the clubs’ proposals, then this goes
through to RI and voted upon internationally.
GETS Training in Ghana
Shirley has been invited by Rotary International to be a trainer at
the Governor Elects Training Sessions in Accra in September
2014.
Shirley will also attend the RI Institute in Ghana as the Rotary Public
Image Coordinator for Southern Africa...she serves her 3rd and final
year in this post.
The Humanitarian Distribution Centre
of Southern Africa has for the past 12 years re-

receive a donation) for schools, libraries, prisons, nursery
schools, universities etc.
