ABOUT CODY

-Originally selected out of Christian High School (El Cajon, Calif.) in the 27th round of the 2012 draft by the Washington Nationals, Poteet opted to play collegiately at UCLA. He began his career mostly as a reliever on weekends and starter during the week before making a near full-time move to the weekend rotation as a sophomore in 2014 and junior in 2015.

Poteet told the Greensboro News and Record in 2016 that, “As a starter, I’m definitely pitching to contact. I’m looking for contact early in the count on my terms and for strikeouts only when I need them... But that’s not the mindset: to go out there and strike everybody out. The mindset is to manage the game, stay off the middle of the plate as much as you can and then throw multiple pitches for strikes in good parts of the zone.”

-Cody met UCLA basketball player Madeline Brooks in geography class during their first semester of college. They quickly connected over their similar interests of sports and religion and after six months of dating, became engaged. They were married on August 9, 2014 in a ceremony on UCLA’s campus.

2019 SEASON

-Poteet was named to the Southern League Midseason All-Star team. The honor is his second career All-Star selection (2017 Midseason All-Star with High-A Jupiter).

-Over his last seven starts, Poteet has surrendered 11 runs, nine earned, on 33 hits in 44.2 innings for a 1.81 ERA (27 K, 7 BB).

-Opponents have swung and missed at 9.8 percent of Poteet’s pitches, the 22nd-lowest such mark out of 113 pitchers in the Southern League (minimum 20.0 innings).

2018 SEASON

-With Jacksonville in 2018, Poteet struggled to begin innings. Leadoff batters slashed .360/.423/.631 (1.053 OPS) in 123 plate appearances.

-Poteet posted slightly better numbers at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in 2018 than when he pitched on the road. In 56.2 innings on his home mound, he registered a 4.13 ERA and .252 batting average against. However, in 63.0 road frames, Poteet surrendered a 6.29 ERA and .316 batting average against.

2017 SEASON-In 42.2 innings in the first half of the season with Jupiter in 2017, Poteet collected a 2.53 ERA (42 H, 11 BB, 21 K). However, in the second half of the campaign, he posted a 6.03 ERA in 37.1 frames (32 H, 12 BB, 19 K).

2016 SEASON-Over the season’s first half, Poteet went 3-5 with a 2.43 ERA in 13 starts that covered 63.0 innings (56 H, 22 BB, 57 K). However, in the second half of the campaign, the right-hander’s ERA swelled by over a run to a still-solid 3.48 in 11 starts. He registered a 1-4 record and yielded 52 hits in 54.1 innings, punching out 49 against 22 walks.

-Poteet held right-handed batters to a .623 OPS in 285 plate appearances. Lefties notched just a .711 OPS in 222 plate appearances.

ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES-A political science major at UCLA, Poteet was a two-time Honorable Mention Pac-12 All-Academic selection (2014, 2015). He finished his UCLA career with a 14-12 record and 3.92 ERA.

-Poteet broke a pair of records at Christian High School as a junior in 2011 with 55 hits for a .509 batting average.
