our mission Ending Child Homelessness
our goalMaking sure homeless children and their families never experience homelessness again.
our model Breaking the cycle of homelessness through education. For our children this means providing them with the highest quality early childhood education, as well as play therapy, developmental, health, nutritional and transportation services. For our parents, this means offering job training, life-skills training, and other educational resources to put them on the path to self-sufficiency.
our results We serve over 100 children and their families each year with an 82% success rate.

YEARS AGO,Lauri Reiter, Lisa O’Riley and Bobbie Bingham, noted there was a recurring presence of young single mothers with children under the age of 6 who routinely visited their churches to request food, clothing and housing support. It was clear to them that the parents would not be able to obtain housing on their own, finish high school, attend training or search for jobs, with the responsibility of caring for their children. As a young mother with three children, Reiter realized that with the cost of daycare that her family paid, the parents they were assisting could not become self-sustaining without daycare support.
Founders Reiter, O’Riley, and Bingham, opened the doors of Cuidando Los Niños in February of 1989 with 5 children, 1 paid teacher and 4 volunteers in a space donated by the Second Congregational Church at 1701 Broadway SE. Original licensing allowed 26 children under the age of six. Several slots were allocated for children from the community—a commitment made to the church. From the beginning the food scarcity issue was noted and children were fed breakfast, lunch and snacks daily. An after-school program was added from 3-6 P.M. soon after opening. Although not originally in the plans, the age range served expanded to young infants from six weeks of age at the urging of nuns at Barrett Foundation.
After five years, CLNkids moved to 1500 Walter Street SE, on the site of the John Marshall Community Center. The increased space made it possible to increase the enrollment physical capacity to 52 children. In 2007, the City used Community Development funds to renovate/rebuild the facility on Walter. A grand re-opening was held in early 2008 of the space we still call home today.
With the leadership of our past Executive Directors, Peggy McIntire, Carolyn Griffin, Suzanne Farley and Jaime Tamez, CLNkids has grown: from a staff of 1 paid teacher, 4 volunteers and a budget of $50,000, to 25 full and part-time staff, a minimum of 8 volunteers regularly scheduled each week, and a budget of $1.3 million.
Recognized by Albuquerque Business First as one of the 2014 Non-Profit of the Year honorees, CLNkids is proud to celebrate 25 years of opening doors to children and families experiencing homelessness. We thank all of you for being here tonight to join us in celebrating our history, our work, and our community partners, and for helping us to increase awareness in our community about the issues of homelessness and the critical role organizations like CLNkids play in assisting children and families struggling to break the cycle of homelessness.
