1 Information on the Current Version and
History
1.1 New Functions
The following table lists the new functions and indicates the version the new function
was introduced in:
Version Function
CLIPSTER 6.0 Color Processing Engine
Ensure the correct representation of the creative intent on a specific target screen when creating file or video outputs with the new color processing engine in CLIPSTER. This new functionality provides the user with fine control over the transformation of advanced color formatting (primaries, white point, transfer function, and encoding range) on a per clip basis as well as over an entire timeline.
This new workflow allows the user to define the qualities of the source content, define the desired output and let the Color Processing engine in CLIPSTER handle the mathematical transformations needed to arrive at the destination color format in realtime.
Source settings:
Output settings:
Each clip in the timeline can have its own unique color format, and this allows many different types of material to be mixed in the timeline at once.
Ignoring advanced settings:
If you don't know the advanced color characteristics of your source content, the behavior of previous CLIPSTER versions can be emulated by using the "Bypass" mode:
R&S®CLIPSTER® Information on the Current Version and History
Release Note R&S®CLIPSTER® 6.0 4
When the output is set to "Bypass", no transformations will be done respective to that property to any clips in the timeline.
The Color Processing Engine manages 3 main color format parameters:
● Encoding Range - Head and Full
● Color Space - Rec. 709, Rec. 2020, P3 DCI, XYZ, etc.
● Transfer Function - Plain Gamma 2.2/2.4/2.6, linear, etc.
Encoding Range: Depending on the use case (Cinema, Broadcast, etc.) and the target device, the values of the video content may have to be converted from a Full range to the restricted Head range or vice versa.
Color Space: The color spaces used in video production differ in gamut. In order to represent the same color on different target screens, the coordinates of the input color space have to be adapted to the corresponding primaries and white point of the color space of the target device.

Release Note R&S®CLIPSTER® 6.0 5
Transfer Function: A function that takes one input value and outputs another to reproduce the gamma of an image. In conjunction with video production, a specific transfer function is usually used with a specific color space only.
Source Color Format Editor
The Source Color Forma Editor is available in the Timeline output settings and in every Delivery Tool. Use the Editor to analyze which source files have color properties set to Bypass, meaning their color format is unknown to the system.
Here you can also define and redefine the source color format for each clip in the Timeline by being able to set the Color Space, Transfer Function and Encoding Range.

As a result, you can mix multiple sources in the same timeline for an improved mastering workflow.
SMPTE Gamma Override
The Rec 709 document refers to both an OETF (SMPTE 2.2) and an EOTF (Plain Gamma 2.4 / BT1886). This flexibility has caused confusion in the mastering process, since it is not always clear what display environment was used for each master; this is because each mastering facility has the choice to interpret that recommendation as they see fit. Further cause for confusion is the customization of the transfer function used in the mastering display away from BT1886 (2.4 Plain Gamma) to custom settings on the grading monitor. CLIPSTER now allows each facility to choose the desired transfer function when working in Rec 709. Our recommendation for a display referred approach is to use the EOTF defined in BT1886; 2.4 Plain Gamma for Rec 709.
This is the default setting of CLIPSTER. To use the OETF defined in Rec 709, commonly referred to as 2.2 SMPTE Gamma, select "None". Beware that this OETF transfer function was not designed for RAW formats or today's non-CRT displays and should only be used when you are certain that this transfer function is appropriate for your content.
Color Settings Override in the Bin
With this setting you can determine the override settings for the color space, transfer function, encoding range and YUV matrix for each video file loaded in the Bin. If set to
R&S®CLIPSTER® Information on the Current Version and History

"Auto" (default setting), the properties will be autodetected. Note that if autodetection fails, they will be automatically set to "Bypass".
To access this setting, open the Configuration Tool and select the Bin settings.
Bulk Editing
The clip properties of multiple or all video clips loaded in the Bin can be changed simultaneously, simply by selecting the desired video clips and changing the respective settings in the Clip properties window. There is no need to open it separately for each of the files.
Subtitle Color Override
This configuration setting allows you to define the default color format of the subtitles.
To access this setting, open the Configuration Tool and select the Subtitling settings.
Forensic Watermarking
CLIPSTER supports the NexGuard® watermarking solution by Civolution®. A forensic watermark is an image filter providing a unique, imperceptible and non-removable identifier which is embedded into the video content.
NexGuard uses a floating license model controlled by a license server (delivered separately) to distribute license tokens among the local CLIPSTER stations. A NexGuard Manager creates and issues the watermarking ID and stores that ID and all associated metadata about a watermarked element. The NexGuard Manager is running on a virtual machine as a stand-alone server supporting multiple rendering stations. R&S provides the hardware and software for this option.
Watermarking can be performed with every file-to-file transcoding task in CLIPSTER i.e. it can be enabled in every Delivery Tool.
An easy to use Wizard guides the user to enter the information required for watermarking:

1.2 Modified Functions
The following table lists the modified functions and indicates the version the
modification was carried out in:
Modifications of the CLIPSTER Software Version 6.0:
Version Function
CLIPSTER 6.0 Clip Properties
Advanced Color Format has been added to the bin clip properties. The color format parameters cannot be extracted from all file formats, in which case they will default to "Bypass". These settings can be configured manually:
XYZ to RGB SMPTE Gamma
When loading a DCP, the control of how to convert from XYZ to RGB has been changed. To control the desired color space, the timeline output settings can be configured directly. The control over Plain Gamma vs SMPTE Gamma can be controlled via 'SMPTE Gamma Override'. To achieve the same results as the defaults in Software Version 5.x (Rec 709 SMPTE Gamma), set the timeline to:
and the "SMPTE Gamma Override" to:
Legacy DCI Players
If enabled in the DCI Wizard, a special rate control will be activated to ensure the playback of encoded DCPs on all D-Cinema players/servers, including players of older generations. It is based on R&S DVS longtime DCI experience and knowledge about minor incompatibilities of some cinema players with the DCI standard.
Removed features
● 2nd Color Correction removed
● 6-vector Color Correction removed
● Proxy generation/prerendering of timeline has been removed (no longer needed)
● No RAW file support

1.3 Known Issues
The following table lists the known issues and indicate since which version the issue
could be observed:
Known Issues of CLIPSTER Software Version 6.0:
Version Function
CLIPSTER 6.0. Watermarking
Rendering must be manually stopped when attempting to watermark a clip with an existing NexGuard watermark.
When adding a forensic watermark to a clip that already contains an embedded watermark, the detection of that watermark will only occur after 3 minutes of material has been rendered. If an existing watermark has been detected, the progress of the finalize job will pause and the finalize job must be manually stopped by the user. It is recommended that the resulting file be deleted.
NexGuard License
NexGuard license will be deleted by the CLIPSTER installer if the license is located in the CLIPSTER install directory.
I/O Tool
● I/O Tool not stable (SD, Digital Sync, 4K SDI one quadron sometimes garbage)
● JPEG2000 support removed
● Color processing can be configured (color space, transfer function, encoding range), but cannot be applied. Data format conversion is supported (RGB-YUV, 12-10bit)
● Not all listed rasters are fully supported
File Formats / Codecs:
● Encoding MPEG-2 codecs (i.e. XDCAM, MPEG-2 TS) cause crashes with 10 cores per socket. The number of CPUs used by CLIPSTER can be reduced to 8 cores per socket as a workaround.
● Silicon Graphics image sequence (.SGI) write removed
● JPEG 420 read not supported
DCI
DCP XYZ: Default behavior in 5.10 changed in 6.0: Outputting 'Rec 709 Gamma' uses '2.4 plain gamma' (BT1886) by default instead of '2.2 SMPTE gamma'. Default behavior can be configured by user.
Miscellaneous
● Stereo dual stream overlay playout can drop frames
● Stereo raster can no longer be selected for ingest
● AES-EBU Audio / analog Audio not functional yet
● Thumbnails and previews in GUI do not always match video in overlay (depends on output settings)
● Missing overlay can occur, restarting the software fixes the issue
● SDI downconverter not functional yet
● Pan+Scan in Slave Mode not functional
● No support for BCP Level 6 yet
● Rotation operator not functional yet
● 4K 60p RGB 12 bit not realtime capable with every workflow
● PEM file now in C:/ProgramData/Rohde-Schwarz/Clipster/Certificates
● Specifying a non-existing render path causes a render error in the IMF Tool
● Transwrapping an encrypted DCP runs slower than unencrypted (120fps)
