TUNGSTENClipsal’s tungsten halogen floodlights use a residential fitting and are suitable for general lighting purposes. The main advantage with tungsten halogen lighting is its ability to provide instant bright light when turned on and does not require a cooling off period before switching on again.

METAL HALIDE Clipsal’s metal halide floodlights offer the latest in lamp technology using a discharge gas lamp operated by control gear within the floodlight. Metal halide floodlights are ideal for applications where lighting is left on for long periods, while providing great energy saving benefits and long lamp operating hours.

They are available in white and blue illumination and have an extremely long lamp life exceeding 50,000 hours. DALI CONTROL

ALL UNDER CONTROL WITH DALIDuring the late 90s Europe’s leading lighting ballast manufacturers, such as Tridonicatco, Philips and Osram, recognised the need to adopt a single interface standard for digital lighting control systems. The outcome was DALI, an international standard which stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. Through local manufacturers, DALI Control, Clipsal now brings you the benefi ts of what the lighting control industry describes as the world’s standard for digital lighting control.

DALI is the ‘English’ or common language between lighting and control devices. This means specifi ers, architects and end users can rely on the compatibility and interchangeability of different control modules from different manufacturers. This includes everything from electronic ballasts, transformers, LED lights, emergency lights and exit signs to motion sensors, wall switch and touch screen controls.

In 2003 Andrew Parker and Mike Randall of Melbourne based Monitor Software recognised an opportunity. Drawing on their experience with many lighting control systems they began development on control hardware and software to fully support the intelligent features of DALI.

Monitor Software’s background is in process control and distributed control systems. By incorporating this methodology into their controllers they have created a lighting control solution that not only speaks the DALI protocol but offers individual control of every light and monitors its status. The solution offered by Monitor Software is based on its clever BM2600 controllers and is branded DALI Control. The controllers are installed around a building on an ethernet network and use time schedules, push buttons, switches and sensor inputs to control lighting on DALI communications loops.

BALLASTSControls the current fl owing through a fl uorescent lamp. A low loss ballast consumes less watts per lamp and therefore produces less heat to reduce electricity bills. Electronic ballasts are the most effi cient.

BLOCKING INDICATOR An inductor (coil) wired in series with a fi tting to present a high impedance to ripple control frequencies. When added to a power factor correction capacitor it blocks the ripple control frequencies from reaching the capacitor and prevents them from being reduced in amplitude. Used in some areas of NSW.

COLOUR RENDERING (RA)The ability of a lamp to give good colour representation of the object it is illuminating. The unit of measurement is RA. Some lamps have better colour rendering than others and should be selected for colour critical applications.

COLOUR TEMPERATURE (K)Applications for different colour temperature lamps:

Use warm white for accentuating warm colours (red, brown cream etc.) 3000K.

Use cool white with cool colours like grey and blue 4000K.

Use daylight colours in hot climates as a warm lamp makes people feel hotter 6000K.

DICHROIC A coating on the refl ector that allows some of the infrared (heat) energy created by the lamp to pass through the back of the fi tting instead of being refl ected forward.

DISCHARGE LAMPS A lamp that produces light from an internal electric arc.

EMC REGULATIONSince January 1, 1999 Australian regulations have required that all light fi ttings comply with regulations concerning the amount of electrical interference produced by the fi tting. This is of special concern to fl uorescent fi ttings as they generate considerable interference (mainly from the lamp).

ENERGY EFFICIENCY INDEXDesigned to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. Index provides the corrected total input power of the lamp and ballast circuit for that particular lamp and ballast combination. There are seven classifi cations or MEPS ratings: A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C, D. The A1 classifi cation is the most effi cient.

EMERGENCY LIGHTINGProvides defi ned levels of light to enable safe exit from a building when the mains power has failed. It has to switch on automatically and operate from batteries for at least two hours.

GLARE CONTROL Minimized by controlling the angle at which light is able to leave the luminaire. Such fi ttings are called low brightness luminaries. There are three methods of controlling the light angles: prismatic diffusers, egg crate diffusers and aluminum louvres.

GENERAL LIGHTING SERVICE (GLS)Refers to a standard mains powered incandescent lamp.

GLARE RATING SYSTEMSIn Australia, a glare index system is used which takes into account the actual installation parametres as well as the luminaire. This system is a relative measurement of the visual discomfort of a seated observer who is looking straight ahead.

HIGH PRESSURE SODIUMA type of discharge lamp used mainly for outdoor applications. Produces a golden hue light. Good lumens per Watt and long life. Poor colour rendering.

INCANDESCENTA material (tungsten in the case of fi lament lamps) that is heated until it gives off visible light. The tungsten slowly evaporates and darkens the inside of the lamp. As the tungsten evaporates the fi lament becomes thinner and eventually breaks.

LEAD LAGSome locations in Australia use lead / lag fi ttings. These are twin lamp types with one lamp having a leading power factor (current leading voltage) and one lamp having lagging power factor. Single lamp fi ttings of this type are call leading power factor (capacitor in series with ballast).

LIGHT EMITTING DIODES (LED) In recent years LEDs have become more powerful and more multicoloured. They have almost reached a lumen output level that makes it possible to achieve useful output for use in luminaires.

LIGHTING CALCULATIONSThe utilization factor table and a few simple formulas allow us to calculate the number of fi ttings required for any room. This is a value between 0 and 1. It takes into account the room refl ectances, room shape, polar distribution and light output ratio of the fi tting, however most computer programs accessing IES fi les now perform calculations.

LUMENThe measurement of the total amount of light output from a lamp.

LUXThe measurement of the light intensity falling on a surface. One lux is equal to one lumen per square metre. The Australian standard ASNZ1680 gives lux levels for many different industries.

METAL HALIDEA version of the mercury vapour discharge lamp with additional chemical additives that produces a more natural light than standard mercury vapour. Good colour rendering.

MOUNTING HEIGHTSFor fl uorescent lighting - heights over 5m use highbay, below 5M use lowbay. Spacing to mounting height ratios relate to the spacing between the light fi ttings for any given mounting height.

POWER FACTORThe relationship between an alternating voltage and current in a circuit. In a resistive circuit (eg heater, toaster, electric cooker) the current is in phase with the Voltage. However, some devices with magnetic components in the circuit (eg ballasts) alter the phase relationship that causes extra current to be drawn for the same power output. Ballasts (being inductive components) cause the current to lag behind the voltage.

TRIPHOSPHOR LAMPSTriphosphor fl uorescent lamps have three different phosphors coating the inside of the lamp. Each phosphor operates in its own colour band (red, green and blue) to give an improved combined colour output.

TUNGSTEN HALOGENA type of incandescent lamp that uses a tungsten fi lament and a halogen gas inside a small lamp. The halogen gas acts to recirculate the evaporated tungsten back to the fi lament, thus giving a longer life and keeping the inside of the lamp clean. Also known as metal halogen.
