Introduction and course requirements

Course description• This is a four-credit-hour course with the duration of

one academic year. The course made up of didactic and clinical components. The course consists of one lecture (1 hour) and one clinical session of (3 hours) per week for the whole academic year.

• The primary goals of pediatric dentistry include the diagnosis and prevention of disease, the preservation of the natural dentition and the restoration of health, function and esthetic of stomatognathic system. The lectures will cover all these topics.

Course objectivesThe main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course:• To guide the students through a cascade of clinical skills that will

enable them to properly examine, diagnose and mange common oral problems and diseases in children.

• To provide the student with the academic knowledge to enable him/her to assess the needs and to provide appropriate treatment for pediatric patients with carious and pulpally involved teeth.

• To implement infection control policies in the dental setting.• Patients with age ranging from 8-14 years will be selected

according to course requirements.

attendance• Students MUST attend all lectures and clinics, and be

ON TIME. • Student who fails to attend a lecture/clinic, he must

report to COURSE DIRECTOR the reason behind his absence.

• Any student who fails to attend 75% of lectures/clinics will not be allowed to sit for the FINAL EXAMINATION.

• No excuse whatsoever.



Grading criteria•Continuous assessment – 60%.•Final Exam – 40%.•Student MUST pass both parts individually to pass the course. •If a student passes the Continuous assessment but fails the Final Exam part, or vice versa, he will not pass the course.



Grading criteria•Continuous assessment – 60%.The evaluation will be as the following:

I.Didactic Exams 30% distributed as first assessment 15% and second assessment 15%.[Essay or/and short note questions or/and MCQs]


Grading criteriaII.Practical evaluation (Clinical Requirement) 30%. Distributed as follow:

- 15% for who fulfills the clinical requirements,

- 5% for average of weekly evaluation (Quality of work and knowledge),

- 5% for number of weekly evaluation during the whole academic year

- 5% for points. Students will be evaluated on weekly basis. Several instructors are assigned for this course. Each instructor will work with a group of students for several weeks (four weeks), and then rotate with other group. The final grade for the quality of work will be calculated by averaging the grades given by all the instructors. The knowledge of the students will be tested on weekly basis by the instructor on the clinical procedure he performing or related topics as part of criteria of continuous assessment.


Grading criteria

II. Final Exam. 40%.

Distributed as follow:

- 30% for the final written exam (All lecture materials presented during the first and second semester) and

- 10% for final practical exam (On patient with any procedure required in the clinical requirements)
