VOL 3 MON, FEBRUARY 01, 2010 ONE DOLLAR

O’r diwedd, mae albwm cysyniadol, hir ddisgwyliedig, Docfeistr wedi ei orffen ac nawr ar gael yn eich siop recordiau lleol. Albwm am fodolaeth drwg sydd yn dod o’r mor yw hi ac trwy’r albwm rydym yn dilyn eu hynt a’i helyntion. Prosiect Gruff Meredith a M.C Saizmundo yw hwn ac mae’r albwm yn cynnwys amryw o fan-diau o wahanol fath o gerddoriaeth gan gynnwys Mr Huw, Eitha Tal Ffranco, Bryn Fôn, Mr Phormula a Gruff Rhys. Am fwy o wybodaeth ewch i http://www.myspace.com/docfeistr neu www.ankst.net.

Prosiect sydd hanner ffordd drwyddi yw yr albwm ‘Ffranconstein’ . Syniad Geraint Ffrancon, sydd yn enwog am greu cerddoriaeth electronig, yw hi ac ei obeithion yw creu albwm lle bydd artistiaid, ysgrifennwyr, barddonwyr, creawdwyr ffilmiau a fideos yn cyfrannu. Mae Geraint angen eich help i wireddu eu freuddwyd. I gael fwy o wybodaeth am yr albwm a clywed cip o ganeuon sydd am ymddangos ar yr albwm, ewch i http://www.ffrancon.net/

Bydd Marina and the Diamonds (merch sydd ymhob rhestr tips cerddorol y flwyddyn) yn rhyddhau eu albwm cyntaf. Los Campesinos a Joy Formidable yn siwr o ryddhau albwms llawn o gerddoria-eth indie perffaith. I’r rhai sy’n hoff o gerddoriaeth gwerin, mae yna llawer o albwms yn dod allan o’r label Gwymon yn cynnwys albwm newydd Richard James (ex Gorky’s), Lleuwen Steffan a Gentle Good. Yn y sin roc Gymraeg, edry-chwch ymlaen i glywed stwff newydd gan Sibrydion, Al Lewis a Racehorses. Heb anghofio hefyd, albwms newydd gan Kids in Glass Houses a Bullet for my Valentine.

Sion Jones

I ychwanegu eich newyddion gyrwch e-bost i [email protected]

Mae’n anodd credu mai dim ond blwyd-dyn yn ôl oedd hi pan ddyweddodd Anweledig ffarwel i’r Sin Roc Gymraeg, ond, na phoener. Mae Gai Toms yn dal i ysgrifennu gerddoriaeth ac yn gobeithio rhyddhau albwm arall blwyddyn yma. Hefyd, mae Ceri Cunnington wedi dechrau prosiect cerddorol, unigol o’r enw Twmffat. Mae ganddo caneuon ar ei Myspace yn barod, felly, ewch yna da’chi i glywed y danteithion mae ganddo i gyn-nig www.myspace.com/cericunnington

Gwefan newydd sydd newydd ddod i fodolaeth yw www.ytwll.com sydd wedi ymrodddi i sôn am gerddoriaeth, celf a ddiwylliant Cymraeg. Blog yw hi sydd yn cynnwys nifer o erthyglon amrywiol yn sôn am bethau fel caneuon electronig gorau y ddau ddegawd diwethaf i ffilmiau Cymraeg er mwyn difyrru eich pennau bach.

TRYDAR -DEG UCHAFYn y rhifyn diwethaf, mi wnaethom ni edrych ar Myspaces. Mae yna nifer o

safleoedd cymdeithasol rhwydweithiol ar y rhyngrwyd, ond rydym ni’n teimlo y

dylen ni darparu gwybodaeth i rai o ddarllenwyr syml. Felly, rydym wedi dewis

y 10 tweeters (bobl sydd ar y twitter) i ddilyn. Mae Twitter yn un o wefannau

syml ar y blaned. Yr unig beth sydd angen dweud yw be yr ydych yn wneud

mewn llai na 140 o lythrennau. Dyma ddiffiniad Twitter gan y bobl sydd yn

rhedeg y wefan.

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate

and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to

one simple question: What are you doing?

Ond, da ni’n teimlo mae Twitter yn fwy na hynny. Mae wedi galluogi i bobl sydd

heb fywydau i dreulio eu hamser yn dweud wrth eu ffrindiau bach nhw am

bethau dibwynt fel eu bod wedi mynd i’r toiled yn ddiweddar neu mae nhw’n

cyfaddef ar Twitter nad oes ganddyn nhw fywyd o gwbl. Felly, os ydych chi’n

Beth allwch chi wneud?

Merch 20 mlwydd oed oedd Sophie, oedd yn cymeryd blwyddyn allan oi addysg cyn mynd i astudio Saesneg ym mhrifysgol.Roedd hi’n ferch hoffus a charedig, oedd yn dilyn y sin roc ac yn falch oi delwedd gwahanol, ei dreadlocks ai piercings. Roedd hi wedi bod hefo’i chariad Robert Maltby am dair mlynedd pan cawsant ei ymosod ar gan criw o chavs oedd yn yfed mewn parc yn Bacup yn Lancashire. Wnaethant daro Robert yn anymwybodol, a chicio Sophie a stampio ar ei phen tra roedd hi’n trio ei amddiffyn

Mewn datganiad dywedodd yr heddlu fod cymaint o olwg ar y ddau ar ol yr ymosodiad nad oedd on gallu canfod pa un oedd y ferch a pa un oedd y bachgen. ac fe wnaeth Sophie farw oi anafiadau pythefnos yn ddiweddarach, pan wnaeth y teulu cytuno i droir cymorth fywyd i ffwrdd.

Pan aeth yr achos ir cwrt, dywedodd yr erlyn-iad fod y dioddefwyr wedi cael ei targedu, dim am unrhyw beth wnaethon nhw wneud neu dweud, ond am ei ffordd o wisgo, Ond er hyn, ar ol I deuluoedd y ddau, a miloedd o fobl arall ymgyr-chio am cyfraith newydd, y fuasain gwneud i bobl sylweddoli fod y fathau yma o ymosodiadau yr un mor ddifrifol ac ymosodiau yn erbyn bobl oher-wydd lliw ei croen ayyb , wnaeth y llywodraeth penderfynnu peidio diffinio digwyddiadau fel hyn fel ‘hate crimes’.

Mae dylanwad reggae wedi chware rôl bwysig o fewn y Sin miwsig Gymraeg yng Nghymru

o Jarman, Maffia, a’r Llwybr Llaethog i anweledig a Derwyddon Dr.g, ond yn ogystal mae wedi chware rhan fawr i’r rhai di Gymraeg eu hiaith yng Nghymru o griw fel Leeighroy ai fand Bob Bailey and the Jailers yng Nghaerdydd i griw Zion Train yn Sir Benfro a’r enwog Tribulation Rockers ym Mangor.

Ers sbel yn nawr mae band reggae o ardal Môn a Pesda wedi bod yn cyfuno cerddoriaeth reggae byrlymog gyda melodïau hyfryd Cymraeg a Saesneg….. nath Clinc-r dal fyny hefo Stevey G I ffeindio allan fwy am y band :

Pam ti’n meddwl bod reggae mor boblogaidd yng Nghymru?Mae’r neges o ‘one love’ ac undod yn fyd eang ac mae reggae yn boblogaidd drwy’r byd, nid jyst yng Nghymru.

Felly sut fysa ti’n esbonio yr adfeddiant gwyn o gerddoriaeth Jamaicanaidd yng Nghymru? Mae cerddoriaeth yn amryliw ac yn lluoswladol, nid yw’n cydnabod ffiniau cenedlaethol na hiliol.

Digon teg Steve, so elli di ddisgrifio sŵn y band?Mae’n naturiol, yn ‘soulful’ ac yn ymgodol.

Sut mae o’n wahanol i fandiau eraill?Mae reggae yn apelio I’r calon enaid ar pen, ac mae ein sŵn ni yn gyfuniad o ddeuddeg unigolyn sydd yn rhannu annedd am reggae.

Allan o’r holl wahanol steiliau o gerddoriaeth reggae elli di ddewis 3 o dy hoff steiliau ac artistiaid? Wailers – roots, Soul Vendors- dub, Upsetters- Dancehall.

So da chi di bod yn recordio 4 trac ar gyfer sioe Adam Walton, oes unrhyw gynlluniau i ryddhau albwm? Fydda ni’n recordio fwy o draciau yn y Gwanwyn..

Ti’n meddwl bydd miwsig reggae yn apelio i’r ifanc newydd yng Nghymru neu fyddai’n diflannu gyda’i wrandawyr hyn?Mae reggae yn apelio i bob oedran a diwylliant gan ei fod ei wreiddiau yng nghariad, ac mae yma i aros!

In 2009 there were two major underground acts which officially came out of the caves …. One was the acid casualty

Rodriguez (played @ Green man in 09!) and the other were the…ehhermmm…the act formerly known as The Caves now called THE OWLS. Alright folks, so, first things first, so what you’ve been up to? After the first record with The Caves , there were a few changes of personnel, so things were unsettled for a while, but we still kept on rehearsing and working on new songs. The line up is settled now,

under the new name of The Owls & we’ve been recording some new songs and we’re due to head back into the studio very soon to finish the new tracks.

Next question, what were you doing before you started the band and why did you decide to start a band? Dai formed the Caves back in 2003, before that he was delivering photographs around South Wales or so I’m lead to believe. I was playing in a blues type band, I met Dai through a mutual friend, I liked the songs, so it was an easy decision to join really, THE OWLS was a natural follow up!

I here you come from Swansea, so has the town influenced your music? Well, we all live in Swansea, but only James is a true native. I’m from Trefin, near Ty Ddewi in Pembrokeshire, Dai is from the Afan Valley and Chris is from Glasgow. I wouldn’t say the town has directly influenced the music, but I suppose the music you’re exposed to through your friends does in some shape or form. What have been other influences of the band? We all like the same music really, Beatles, a bit of country, indie sort of stuff. I’d

THE OWLS

Page 13: Clinc-R #3

Chris is out on his on though, some of the stuff he listens to is complete dirge, don’t tell him that though.

Describe your music in three words. This is difficult. Is that three words?

For a band starting out, what would be your advice to them? Don’t give up and don’t try to be anything you’re not.

For anyone who would like to watch you live, where are your next gigs? We’re always playing around and about Swansea. Got some festivals coming up in the summer, looking forward to those.

What are your plans for the future? Staying alive would be handy.

Any bands in the area we should look out for? We all play in a couple of bands around Swansea and there seems to be a healthy music scene at the moment. Boatbar to Hamburg, King of Despair, Ringo Levio, The Double O Zeroes, No Thee No Ess, Dufraine...

And for the final question, which famous musician would you most like to collaborate with, dead or alive? Elvis. It’s got to be hasn’t it?

T

HIS TIME IT’S FOR REAL!!!!

funeral for a friend

Where did the name funeral for a friend come from? Basically Matt(lead singer)came up with it, because it was a song title for a band from The States, called “Planes Mistaken For Stars” he really liked, it was the title of a song on their album “Fuck with Fire”, so he liked it and thought it would be a cool band name.

Who drove you to daytime television?I don’t think anyone did really, again it’s sort of like I dunno maybe someone drove Matt do daytime television or just boredom drove him to it, I’m not quite sure but I guess kind of everybody’s got these people in their lives who can do that to them so I’d imagine it’s really about someone who did it to Matt

Was it quite difficult starting out in Wales, being an English-speaking band? Not really no, I mean to be honest the welsh language is not spoken as much as it should be in Wales, there’s a lot of Welsh people who don’t actually speak Welsh so I mean kind of English language is the most kind of present language here. So, um it wasn’t difficult, no not really there was a pretty good scene, some good places to play.We all got to know each other from playing in that scene and playing lots of shows in each of our own individual bands before coming together when those bands split up to form funeral so it was cool beginnings, lots of places to play... It was quite easy really. There’s always been a lot of bands here, but it took a little while for people to kind

of acknowledge that and realize, as soon as people like The ‘Prophets, ourselves, Bullet, started kind of making some waves people started paying attention to Wales, people realized there’s a lot more bands from Wales.

Who would you say is your favourite Welsh band?My favourite welsh band um…. It’s almost like trying to pick one of your children ‘cos we’re all good friends and stuff, Who could I say? I dunno…My favourite newish Welsh band is a band called Attack! Attack! yeah they’re great guys we’ve known those guys for years, Really great band, great songs so yeah I’d pick them as a sort of newish Welsh band.

16

Page 17: Clinc-R #3

funeral for a friend

What’s it like coming back and playing shows in Wales? Its always good fun to come back and play shows in Wales, we always get good crowds here, good appreciation we haven’t forgotten where we’ve come from and all, But we’ve played some big shows here as well it’s good to see and hear the Welsh accent and familiar faces and stuff and er, yeah we always enjoy coming home and playing shows here.

What advice would you give to young bands starting out in Wales?Um I think just kind of er don’t give up no matter what kind of anyone tells you, as far as your not good enough or whatever because you know everybody improves with time just stick at it and believe in what you do, practice and play hard,

learn to write good songs and you’ll kind of get to where you want to.

Who would you most like to lock in the cells and why?Who would I most like to lock in the cells? Oh, um that’s quite… Um probably Pete Doherty... the way he’s insulted the music business, by the music he creates and the way he goes about his life is a bit shite. I dunno it would do him a favour cos regular courts don’t seem to want to put him in prison, so I’d lock him up in there for a good spell.

“Your history is mine 2002-2009” is out now, a kind of “best of”, with some new tracks, b-sides and unheard demos...3 discs worth.

of-the-moment gig on my mums

birthday). But the great thing

about going to see a band you

haven’t heard before is that you

can almost never be disappointed,

and also its an awesome surprise

when they turn out to be the best band you’ve seen in a long, long time...

The 02 academy is one

of the best venues around, its

pretty much just a bar, and its

so intimate you can stand on the

side of the stage (and if you

wait long enough after the gig

on a Wednesday it fills up with

students and an alt. Dj!)

It Hugs Back’ crammed themselves onto the tiny

stage, and started playing some of

the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. (With one of the most beautiful keyboardists

I’ve ever seen!)

Its really hard to describe their

music, kind of indie meets grunge meets pulp. In a really good way.

Holy Fuck were completely

different. A surreal, trippy set that sounded like nothing I’ve ever heard before. They just came on and played, no vocals, no bullshit,

and some of the weirdest homemade

instruments in existence,

The name Holy Fuck is

soooo appropriate- it was all

I could think for the first 5

minutes and after that I just

couldn’t think at all, buzzing off the music alone and dancing like a maniac like everyone else in the room the night was a strobe-lit blur of odd yet pounding tunes.

Holy Fuck indeed!!

PAPA ROACH

+FILTERMACHESTER ACADEMY16/05/09

Papa roach’s last gig

in Manchester was at The Apollo

(and for the record-was fucking

amazing), So the move down to

a smaller venue was unusual

especially after just releasing

the album ‘Metamorphosis’ in

March, so unsurprisingly the venue was sold out and completely packed. The support act, Filter were

strange to say the least. In

theory they should have been

really good, the singer had a

great voice, and they weren’t

entirely incompetent as musicians

but somehow it just wasn’t

working for them, I don’t know

whether it was the upbeat music

with slow crooning or the fact

that the singer wanted to be M.

Shadows but I’ve never seen the

bar so packed...

The crowd was infinitely

more happy to see Papa Roach,

going absolutely crazy as frontman Jacoby swaggered onto the stage, only to be

HOLY FUCK

+ITHUGSBACK02 ACADEMY LIVERPOOL13/05/09 If it weren’t for the pure class of this bands name, I

probably would never have been

to see them (it was a total spur-

slightly put off as the pit opened

up to expose a big human poo. The

crowd was still bouncing, but as

the room got hotter and hotter

the poo got smellier and smellier (and spreadier) and that pretty much killed everyones

buzz as the usual fearless moshers

were too scared of landing in the

poo, and the rest of the crowd

was holding back the urge to gag.

Despite the omnipresent

poo the gig was still pretty

awesome, nothing (except the

poo) could draw attention from Jacobys incredible energy and enthusiasm, and the new material being closer to their

old nu-metal roots really made

the night. The acoustic version

of Scars was cheesy but it had

to be done, and the rant before

the single “Hollywood Whore”

was equally cringe worthy, and

annoyingly American, (“this is

about people like that Shitney

Spears....”)

Adding a bitter and slightly

pathetic tone, to an otherwise

powerful show.

hour)

The stage show was nothing fancy really, (not that anyone would have noticed

if it was) there was a bit of a catwalk for him to prance around on, and a big LED screen for “the ping pong song”

, but pretty much everyone in the room had heir eyes stuck on him, and his cute little butt.

ENRIQUE IGLESIAS

+ALESHA DIXONMEN ARENA08/05/09 In my defence, I didn’t go and see Alesha Dixon…(I Don’t think I could have handled sitting through

“does he wash up…” Without trying

to chew off my own ears) …But

That’s all I’ve got really. I’m

not going to justify it though-

I shouldn’t have to, because

Enrique Iglesias is amazing. And it’s only a little bit embarrassing.

On a serious note it

was actually a really good gig.

Enrique actually made an effort

even though he could have just

stood there and not sung a note,

and the female dominated crowd would still have gone crazy for him. It seemed to be a bit

of a fun gig for old Enrique, and

as it was his birthday, we had to

forgive him for wanting to chat

to random people from the crowd,

and for drinking shots on stage

(however he did go a bit too far

chatting to a couple about married

life for about a quarter of an

PINKMEN ARENA 26/04/09 The whole of manchester

seemed to be in the pink spirit

before the gig, and the crowd

was like nothing I’ve ever seen

before (as I usually follow the

black hoodies and eyeliner to

find the venue). Pink cowboy hats, feather bowa’s and glitter... The queue around the arena looked like a cross between the worlds biggest hen night and a gay pride march. Tickets to the gig were also as rare as a

straight guy in the crowd, and

were being flogged for about

£100 each- even though she’d

already played there the night

before!

But I have to say the

hype- and the mission to get

tickets- was definitely worth it.

The stage show itself was worth

all the hassle, the funhouse themed stage was like a big fairground ride, with everything from freaky clowns to pillowfighting dancers, and PVC clad maids. Pink looked fantastic as always, and as well as

an impeccable performance,

incredible dance moves and god

knows how many outfit changes

she also performed a breathtaking

trapeze show to single “sober”.

The set was...

indescribable, every song was better than the last, the intense piano version of ‘family portrait’ sent shivers down my spine, and classic after classic like the single

“so what?” Had everyone

jumping around and singing

along. The gig had a real party

atmosphere, the bands closeness

was evident, and their excitement

contagious, which lead to a surprisingly intimate gig for such a huge venue. They even managed to make Gnarls

Barkleys “crazy” sound not just

good, but out of this world!

DIVISIONBMEX BARMOUTH The only band playing at

a gig that I don’t usually expect

much from...but OMG this band

Blew.My. Mind. Loads of covers

to keep the crowd interested,

including an awesome Nirvana

cover, and some good tunes of

their own. And a singer with

easily the best voice that’s ever

ventured into BMEX. Love them

but I can’t bloody find them on

myspace. Maybe it was all just a

dream....

‘Uniting youth age segregation’ age : 12-17 + 18 -19....like the old Ch.Hall gigs but organized & with a alcohol bar for over 18+....But without the chavs and the drama! The first band to hit the stage was Masacus a three-piece head-banging outfit with a strange and sacrilegious set up of drums and two guitarists…what No bassist…the crime!! The poor loafers only had 3 songs to their names, but considering the fact that they’ve only being going bout a year and the fact that their rehearsal time is spent harassing their fellow band mates Polonium, they did pretty god dam well! Polonium are also a three piece consisting of bass, drums and guitar & vox, and they are also a new band whom only have 3 songs due to the fact that their rehearsal time is taken up by having to cope with a certain certified nutter…yeap the drummer from Masacus! One of their best songs is a screamo rant which is steered towards the Blaenau weather elements…yeah ffocoff GLAW!!! I was quite gutted to miss most of Creaduriaid’s set, after having heard soooo much about them! And I didn’t really know what to expect from “Toms secret band”, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The summerry ska-ishness of the sax and trumpet was really cute, and they just seemed like a really chilled out band, totally comfortable on stage and having a bit of a jam, with random drum solos thrown in here and there (Toms actually pretty good!) Addurn Ar y Mantell were another band I’d never heard before, they came on stage looking all young and nervous, but soon got into it, and they were pretty awesome! They again were completely at home on stage, getting the crowd clapping with their catchy songs, and even singing along to their cover songs. The covers were what made the band for me, because it was completely unexpected to hear Beyonce’s ‘Halo’, and even more unexpected for it to sound so good! Lead singer Nest has an amazing voice (how many people could carry off a Beyonce tune live?) But they way the band combined Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ and Beyonce’s ‘All the Single Ladies’ and adapted it to suit their music style (even though you could tell the guitarists weren’t happy about it) was just fantastic.

Ffest They kept a good balance of covers and original songs - songs about not wanting to grow up, and about their primary school closing down, and a heartbreakingly emotional song called ‘Ble Rwyt Ti?’. The only thing that let them down was the simplicity of some of their lyrics (although this can sometimes be a good thing), but they really are a ridiculously talented band, who will definitely be going places in a few years time. Bad Name were on next, and as Rhys (the host, and the brains behind the operation!) Said, they are about as far from reggae as you can get! Apparently Chris the new drummer only learnt the songs the day before, which is quite impressive considering he’s only 7 years old (well that’s the word on the street) And it was quite a funny set with Ross’ (front man) usual banter and pisstaking, and as usual a really energetic performance. I can only assume that A Case for Horatio got their name from wasting away days of unemployment watching too much CSI: Miami. Time wasted if you ask me, as I’m sure if you count the 5 years or so that front man Rikki Chapman has spent forming and breaking up bands then surely statistically he should have come up with at least one original song by now... apparently not. In their defence, it was their first gig (or at least this variation of the bands 1st gig) and they did manage to get a few kids moshing to their monotonous emo crap, but for some reason, I just wasn’t feeling it. Maybe it was the complete lack of stage presence (a blatant contrast after the other bands- especially Bad Name, and the younger less experienced bands) or their inability to tune their instruments or just the fact that when it comes down to it, Rikki can’t sing. In his defence he seemed suitably humble, apologizing and nervously thanking everyone, but lets face it, it takes more than a bit of courtesy to sell records.

Next Cellfest gigs: 19/06/10 and 17/07/10

If you’ve ever gone to a BMEX gig (a monthly gig that is held monthly in Barmouth) in your life, you’ve probably come across

MFRU (short for My Favourite Runner Up), a four piece Pop Punk band from Abersytwyth. They’ve been in existence since February 2006 and have been recording and realeasing their first album over the last couple of months. I was fortunate enough to get a chat with Andy Towell, MFRU’s guitarist last month.

So guys, where did the name of the band come from and how long you guys been together? Our drummer, Tom, randomly thought of the name of the band and well, we’ve been together for over two happy years now.

Sweet, how did you guys all get together to form My Favourite Runner Up?Basically Tom (Drummer) and Christian (Vocals, Guitar) knew each other through school and went through the whole ‘band student tragedy’ thing with various members until Lee (Bass) and I joined the band. Lee and I knew each other through school as well... and the rest is history!

How are you guys different to all the other bands on the scene? What’s your sound like? Can we possibly squish you guys into a particular musical genre? My Favourite Runner Up is different than all the other bands because we are very random, we try to be funny and have a laugh while performing but at the same time we have serious songs. We would describe our sound as pop-rock or punk-rock, something probably around that genre!

Now that your new album; titled ‘My Favourite Runner Up’, is out, will there be plenty more gigs?Definitely, well, I hope there will be a lot of gigs yes lol!

Where have MFRU played their best gigs?No doubt, our favourite gigs would have to be either Barmouth because the audience is always great and the place has a great sound there run by the BMEX promotion team. Also, Devon, because it was a great atmosphere and we had some pretty awesome fans there.

I’m sure there will be plenty more gigs coming your way guys! What do you think the future holds for MFRU?The future for MFRU will be... gigs, gigs, gigs, album, gigs, gigs, gigs, gigs... gigs? And more gigs...and... ohhh yeah, world domination!

Best of luck to you guys from Clinc-R!

THE OMEGA SANCTION

AKIRA THE DON

As this is my first ever review I was a little apprehensive about having to

criticise someone’s music, however I did my duty for Queen and Country and

proceeded to don my ‘phones and give the old eardrums a good beating. The

mixture of heavy beats, beautifully produced samples and witty lyrics, in this

mixtape-LP creates a fantastic, fresh and original sound. I especially liked the

way that each track blends seamlessly into the next like one long DJ set, and

at 72 minutes it will give you some dancing material!

My favourite songs include ‘The First Day of Spring’ - which can be found on

his myspace, ‘Corporation Headquarters’ - which would not be out of place

on an old-skool Sonic the Hedgehog or Final Fantasy game, and ‘I Don’t

Hate the Beatles Anymore’ - a musical apology for years of pretending to

hate The Beatles for ‘ruining’ music. This is a great collection of songs, and it’s a

bargain! Pick up a bargain for £4.99 at akirathedon.com.

THE FUTURE OF THE LEFT TRAVELS WITH MYSELF AND ANOTHER

Some people may argue that 33 minutes is too short for an album, but not

when this band is Future of the Left. Bursting with raw power, this album

boasts such amazing songs as “Drink Nike” and “Arming Eritrea”. It is unique in

such a way that it manages to come off so dirty, yet so clean with intricate clever

lyrics, yet heavy guitar playing and beating drums. Fueled by rage and anger this

album manages to do what many others can not, that is to make quite heavy, but yet

very catchy songs. In my opinion this is definitely a band that any rock fan would enjoy.

Even if you don’t decide to buy this album you should at least check out one of my

favorite songs “Drink Nike”. Without a doubt one of my favorite bands of 2009.

JEMMA AN INTERVIEW WITH JEMMA ROPER

Page 29: Clinc-R #3

We were going to write an introduction to Heck here, but we found their crazy antics much

to difficult to explain, but we think that this extract off of their Myspace sums them up much better than we ever could. We’ve highlighted our favourite bits!...“I hope you’re sitting down friend. Some interesting facts about Heck; Mogs the drummer is a classically trained pianist and violinist. However, despite being a placid soul, he was once made to pay an £80 fixed penalty fine for throwing a thesaurus at a policeman. Later justifying his actions in court, Mogs told of his anger at ......the bobby’s lack of vocabulary, and ‘his disconcerting lust for power.’... ...Mike the bassist met Jemma at art school in Cardiff. After graduating he taught bass to disadvantaged kids in Splott, but was sacked after slapping a boy who’d thrown coffee at a girl in a wheelchair......This is Mike’s ‘political correctness gone mad’ story, ......and one he has told to a captivated audience at his local masonic lodge. Elis the guitarist actually had a jam with his politics lecturer during a seminar at Cardiff university. After a twenty minute chat about trade union legislation in the 1980s, the lecturer produced his trusty instrument and announced to the class that ‘my philosophy is simple guys. Bass and middle settings on zero, treble on 10. Then it’s foot on the monitor time.’ ......Elis later described this experience as ‘harrowing.’......Jemma the singer was once described as a ‘sexbomb’ in an online review of her old band Sammo Hung. She dismissed this as being the ‘flattering, but nonsensical ramblings of a pervert.’ Eager not to have attention diverted away from the bands music......Jemma attacked the reviewer with a hammer... ...And thus Heck were born. They all like the same records, all share the

same manic desire to spend time in tiny rehearsal rooms, and all like performing to ‘the kids.’ They were always going to form a band, weren’t they?”So, Jemma being a lead singer in the band, your sex appeal stories travel far, so, are you still a nymph?I find that question both randy and terrifying. Do you mean nympho or woodland nymph? I have never been either. Where did your band name come from, from your neck hecking days?A hobby of mine is making noises come out of my face, they often sound like the aliens from Mars Attacks! and I was doing this while we were trying to think of band names. Heck is a fun word to say.We all know you’re a proper rock chick. Do you still sneak small bottles of whisky to pubs or has the band made it now and can afford to pay for your drinks by the bar?I have to be rock n roll for the rest of the band as I can’t drive or play instruments so therefore have no responsibilities. I make use of this fact to the best of my abilities. We’ve heard some of your lyrics and just wandered if Elis’s comedy career has had any say in them or do you Jemma, as a dominant female have the last say?I still write all the lyrics although the boys are welcome to have a go. They just won’t be as good as mine. Elis often hands me piles of paper with retarded scrawl crayoned all over it with a pleading look on his face. And the thought of a drummer writing lyrics is hilarious and poignant. How did the band form and when? The band formed a week ago in the January sales. Can you describe your sound? It seems like a softer version of Sammo Hung.Seems like a softer version of Sammo Hung? That sounds like a snooty remark. All we’ve ever intended to do was write exceptional pop music and I think we achieve that. I think we sound as incendiary as Sammo Hung. We have a latent energy. How is it different to other bands? There’s me for a start. No other band has me in them. And we’re cyborgs. No other band has cyborgs in them.

What do you wish to accomplish as a band?To crush and maim the enemy walking about on our hind legs. We’d like to buy a farm. I’d like to ride a horse with an ice cream cone stuck to its face. What’s been your best gig so far?Supporting The Fall was amazing, but I was a bit gutted that we we’re better than them. All the best gigs are about the shambolic fun of being a punk band on stage and the absurdity of it all. 90% of being in a band is about the banter. 10% is making a riff sound like a laser beam.Tell us about any up and coming gigs and tours? We’re assembling a wee tour at the moment. We shall let you know...Any E.P’s or CD’s coming out soon?An E.P is about to be born to the world like a weird baby.Signed or un signed? Any band you recommend we tune into? We’re currently in a courtship relationship with Clean Living Records. It’s mutual love and respect.King Alexander are our soul mates. We love to do everything together. We’re even going to play on stage together at the same time. This will happen.Been real good to talk to ya – clinc-rmyspace.com/heckisotherpeople
