Climate changes and impact on future

A presentation by Dr Sudhanshu K K Mishra .

Major determinants of climatic changes

• More population, more growth

• Faster economic growth-more industry, transportation etc

• Old technology depends on fossil fuel for running.

• Technological innovations

• Burning fossil fuels is leading to global warming .

• Renewable sources like sun ,wind and water used very little.

Impact

Consequences of a warmer world

Extreme temperatures Projected change in rainfall pattern More arid conditions leading to decreased crop and livestock

production, affecting food safety. People unable to feed themselves –could lead to a situation of large

scale migration The number of heavy rainfall days will increase substantially towards the

end of the 21st century. It is also predicted an increase in number of dry days over central India, but a decrease in other parts

ORGANIC FARMING CAN SAVE THE WORLD

Year Season Increase in temperature, °C Change in rainfall, %

    Lowest Highest Lowest Highest

2020 Rabi 1.08 1.54 -1.95 4.36

  Kharif 0.87 1.12 1.81 5.10

2050 Rabi 2.54 3.18 -9.22 3.82

  Kharif 1.81 2.37 7.18 10.52

2080 Rabi 4.14 6.31 -24.83 4.50

There may be considerable impact on agricultural land use due to snow melt, availability of irrigation, frequency and intensity of inter- and intra-seasonal droughts and floods, soil organic matter transformations, soil erosion, decline in arable areas (due to submergence of coastal lands), and availability of energy.

Impact of climate changeProjected change in temperature and rainfall due to global warming in different crop seasons in 2020, 2050 and 2080s in south Asia.

Climate extreme events• 2015- Hailstorm in Feb. damaging standing

wheat crop• 2014 – unusually heavy floods in Kashmir • 2013-heavy landslide and cloud burst in

Uttarakhand• 2012- drought in Punjab, Haryana & Gujarat• Cyclones of very high intensity hitting coastal

India- Neelam 2012,Phalin & Madi-2013 & Hudhud in 2014.

Action plan on climate change –India

• Identified 8 national missions • These missions identify measures which

promote our development objectives while also co-benefits on climate change front.

• National programme on cleaning of Rivers and treatment of industrial wastes before it reaches the river.

• Focus on sustainable agriculture in rain fed, dry and arid areas.

National missions -India

1.National solar mission 2.National mission for enhanced energy efficiency 3.National mission on sustainable habitat

National missions -India

4.National water mission

5. National mission for sustaining the Himalayan Eco systems

National Missions -India 6.National mission for sustainable agriculture

7. National mission for a green India8. National mission on strategic knowledge for climatic change

• Climate change would have negative impact on our lives, agriculture, weather forests, oceans.

• Negative impacts can be minimized and contained if we act together and without delay.

• Acting now means we need an energy “revolution”. We need to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy. We need to rethink how we manage our forests, design our cities and dispose of our waste.

Giving future generation a chance. Thanks

• I greatly acknowledge the work done by various institutions ,individuals who have done pioneering work on climate change for inputs contributed by them and used in the presentation.

I thank them all.
