WFP supportedover 105 million people
Around 80% of these people
depend on the climate for their
livelihoods
WFP’s use of climate info
WFP is a user, producer and “translator” of climate information:
• Food security early warning systems
• Humanitarian operations
• Resilience building
• Risk transfer and social protection
• Multihazard EW
• GHA Food Security Outlook takes climate forecasts and other data to project food security conditions 6 months in advance.
• Joint effort between WFP, FAO, FEWS NET, UNICEF and others
a) Food security early warning
• ITCZ projections and 7-day precipitation data used to plan logistical operations in Darfur (Darfur Crisis Rain Timeline)
b) Humanitarian operations
c) Resilience building
• Climate data used in Kenya by WFP, Ministry of Agriculture, and communities to design drought risk reduction activities
….Resilience building
• Climate data used in Bangladesh by WFP and the Government to train communities in disaster preparedness and enhance early warning systems
d) Risk transfer & safety nets
• Climate information used to trigger scale up of food security safety net through a weather-index
• WFP and World Bank support GoE through the LEAP project
• Partnership with MoA and NMA
• Global early warning systems (HEWSweb)
• Regional early warning systems for enhanced DRR (SATCA)
e) Multi-hazard early warning
f) Anticipating future risks…
• Climate information used with detailed food security and vulnerability data to identify the most vulnerable livelihoods
…Anticipating future risks…
• Partnerships between users and producers are critical to better use climate information for risk management
Resource scarcity (water, food)
Environmental degradation
Disasters
Population movements
Other risks
…Anticipating future risks…
Setting standards
Ensuring inter-operability
Communication and integration in decision making
Reaching the most vulnerable
Resources and capacities
