PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR FIRST CROSSING CULTURES TEA!
CLIFTON PARK – Clifton Park is constantly changing - with new people joining our community all the time. Many are also new to this country. A group who are practicing their English skills at the Library are interested in getting to know more about the community and the folks who live here, so the Friends of the Library are hosting a Crossing Cultures Tea from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday, October 8 in Program Rooms A & B upstairs in the Library. We’ll have a “treasure hunt” activity to get to know each other better, and some of our newest community members will provide “uncooking” demonstrations in which they tell us how they create some of the wonderful foods from their cultures that will be part of our refreshments. We hope you will take a little time out of your day for an opportunity to become better acquainted “across cultures”! If you do plan to join us, and you would like to introduce us to a food or dish that is rep-resentative of your own cul-ture or ethnic origin, please feel free to bring something - and please bring informa-tion on the dish, includ-ing the recipe (unless it is a well guarded family secret!). Please register to attend the tea by visiting the Library website, or by calling the Li-brary at 371-8622.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE
CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Lena & Her KittensLena and her babies were abandoned at an auto body fa-cility in Corinth. She was very scared and confused when

WHEN IS SEAT BELT
REPLACEMENT NECESSARY?
Seat belts and air bags are safety devices that serve to limit or prevent injury in the event of an automobile acci-dent. Drivers and passengers tend to take these devices for granted, but these safety measures can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury or even death.
Although seat belts do not degrade as quickly as parts
of a vehicle that need fre-quent servicing, there are some instances when seat belts should be replaced.
Seat belts, like car seats and air bags, are considered by the National Highway Traf-fi c Safety Administration to be single-use items. Seat belts are designed to work just once — protecting and immobilizing a passenger in the event of a crash.
Seat belts are more ad-vanced than they were when fi rst introduced in vehicles. Early seat belts were options on cars. It wasn’t until Saab fi rst introduced seat belts fi t-ted as standard in 1958 that the practice became com-monplace. Since then, seat belts have been redesigned many times to make them even more eff ective. They have a pretensioner, which reels back slack on the seat belt. Pretensioners preemp-tively tighten the belt to pre-
vent the occupant from jerk-ing forward in a crash. They can be activated in a bad crash or any crash severe enough to deploy an air bag.
Seat belts also are equipped with locking retractors, which aff ord the seated oc-cupant some movement while still providing a means to limit movement in the event of a crash. Retractors equipped with inertial lock-ing mechanisms stop the belt from extending off the reel during severe decelera-tion.
Both of these safety belt components may eff ectively work only once. After an ac-cident, the ability of preten-sioners and retractors may be compromised. The fabric seat belt itself also may have been marginally stretched out in the crash.
It’s adviseable to replace any seat belts that were in use during a crash to ensure the belts will off er the same mea-sure of protection should a collision occur in the future. Some manufacturers also recommend changing all of the safety belts in the ve-hicle, even if they weren’t in
use at the time of the crash. The vehicle owner’s manual should include recommen-dations regarding when to change seat belts. If it does not, drivers can speak with a dealership mechanic.
Seat belts that are frayed or do not operate properly, regardless of whether or not they were involved in a crash, also should be re-placed. Some safety experts advise having seat belts inspected and possibly re-placed after 10 to 15 years of use. One can never tell how older seat belts will stand up in the event of an accident. If the seat belts have a built-in indicator, verify that they
have not been stretched during regular wear to war-rant replacement.
Seat belts can protect pas-sengers only if they are in good working form. They likely need replacement af-ter a collision.
