CLIFFS OF MOHER VISITOR EXPERIENCE, CO. CLARE The Cliffs of Moher is Ireland’s most visited natural attraction with a magical vista that captures the hearts of up to one million visitors every year. The Cliffs rise to 214m/702 feet at the highest point and range for 8 kilometres or 5 miles over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of Co. Clare. From the Cliffs one can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk Mountains in Connemara and Loop Head to the South.
The Cliffs of Moher take their name from a ruined promontory fort “Mothar” which was demolished during the Napoleonic wars to make room for a signal tower at Hag’s Head.
The secret of how the Cliffs formed... about 320 million years ago, during a time called the Upper Carboniferous period, when this area was much warmer and was situated at the mouth of a large river. The river fl owed down bringing mud and sand with it, eventually dumping it all over this area where it settled and eventually formed the rock layers you see today.
Revenue generated through admission is used to cover costs and improve facilities.
A contribution is made towards the conservation of the natural habitats and protecting the environment, visitor management, education and interpretation of information.
We are committed to the ethos of eco-tourism, we strive to reduce any negative impact on the environment and endeavour to protect local culture and tradition.
Help us protect our environment by leaving no trace of your visit. Thank you for visiting us and we hope you enjoy your day.

WILDLIFE AT THE CLIFFS OF MOHERThe Cliffs of Moher is a Special Protected Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive 1979. The Cliffs of Moher is home to Ireland’s largest mainland seabird nesting colony with 20 species of nesting birds including 9 species of breeding seabirds and up to 30,000 breeding pairs.
From the Cliff edge you can see a host of seabirds - including Puffi ns, the clown of the sea which nest on Goat Island. Early morning to midday is the best time to see the Puffi ns as they go out to sea fi shing in the afternoon. Puffi ns arrive from the mid Atlantic in April and return there at the end of July.
Guillemots & Razorbills can be seen on the fl at stone at the foot of the Branán Mór sea stack. Fulmars nest on the ledges nearer the top of the cliffs, Kittiwakes on ledges on the stack and the Cliff edge. A pair of Peregrine Falcons, the fastest creature on the planet, nest below the tower and can be seen protecting their territory. A pair of Choughs, a rare species known as the Celtic crow, nest below the sandstone ledge and are frequent visitors to the viewing areas.
A herd of wild goats roam the length of the Cliffs of Moher and occasionally can be seen near the visitor areas. Dolphins and seals can commonly be seen out to sea and if you are very lucky you may spy a basking shark, a humpback or minke whale. Cat’s Ear and Sea Pink are some of the very pretty fl owers that can be seen at the Cliffs in Summer. Speak to a Cliffs of Moher Ranger for more information. Bird Identifi cation cards are available in the Visitor Centre.

O’BRIEN’S TOWER Was built in 1835, by Cornelius O’Brien as a viewing point for tourists who fl ocked to the Cliffs of Moher. Visit the tower and climb the spiral staircases and enjoy the view at which the 19th century visitors marvelled. Learn more about local weather patterns and forecasts at the Ranger’s station in the tower. The tower admission includes an O’Brien’s Tower historic information leafl et. Amazingly, views of 5 counties can be enjoyed on a clear day.
The roof top of O’Brien’s Tower offers the best photo opportunity of the Cliffs of Moher.

VISITOR CENTRE BUILDINGThe eco-friendly visitor centre operates using environmental best practices focusing on efficient water and waste management, energy saving measures and environmental awareness.
Opened in 2007, the centre uses geo-thermal energy, waste water treatment and sensor lighting. The grass roofed Visitor Centre is set into the hillside. The centre is a unique cave like structure which minimises the visual impact on this fabulous scenic location.
Help our efforts by disposing of your waste in the correct bin.THE CLIFFS EXHIBITION The exhibition/museum is a story that brings the Cliffs of Moher to life through the following themes Ocean, Rock, Nature and Man. Located on the ground fl oor on the left after you enter the visitor centre building.
There are 2 short movies. ‘The Clare Journey’ (10 mins) in the centre of the dome and the stunning “Ledge Experience” (5 mins) birds eye view of the Cliffs, which is located half way up the ramp on the left hand side.
