Although equally talented in oils

and watercolors, Cavin’s primary

focus is on oil painting, particularly

the landscape. The immediacy and

directness of his work emphasize the

strength and grandeur of nature

while his use of color defines the

gentleness and beauty he finds in the

natural world.

C Cavin These qualities, coupled with his keen ob-

servation, create a clarity and sensitivity

in his work that truly express the emo-

tional qualities of his environment.

GOLDEN

SHADOWS

In “Golden Shadows”, Cavin portrays a cerulean skyline; full of crepuscular light, enraptured with billows of atmospheric haze, lingering on the dying days of summer sentimentality. The autumn blossoming of the Chamisa, with its golden bloom accents this stellar impressionistic landscape painting of Nambe, New Mexico; backdropped by the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Winding stretches of desert sand obscured by dense patches of typical New Mexico vegetation invite the viewer into a foreground bathed in aureate shrubbery. The silhouetted mountain range transforms into a strip of neutral value and tone, easing the transition between the earthly divisions. Derived from over three decades of careful study, Cliff knows that an object in the distance will shift toward blue because it does not reflect as much light. He revs down his color palette by taking cues from the masters like Leonardo da Vinci who noticed that as a landscape recedes from the viewer its colors and tones alter (aerial perspective or atmospheric perspective).

Cliff Cavin visually nourishes the viewer of the Perdenales

Valley with two views of autumn: that time of year when

nature offers the abundance of color that invigorates

optimism. The seasonal view is fleeting as seen in the

contrast of the two paintings. The leaves and water lessen in

quantity, but the time of day offers beauty that only the

setting sun can embrace. The oranges, yellows, and purples

of the skyline repeat the colors of autumn found in the

vegetation and beckon us to another cycle of daylight and

beauty in the Texas Hill Country.

In Perdenales Sky the harmony of evening is in deep

saturated tones as nightfall arrives. The meandering river

leads diagonally to the burst of fall color, to the gorge, the

plateau and finally the sky. The rough terrain is punctuated by

native growth that seeks moisture in the rain faceted rugged

elevations leading upward to the clear sky.

AUTUMN

Page 37: Cliff cavin final catalog 11 18 2014

In Perdenales Autumn the

smooth reflecting water is en-

closed by rough textured boul-

ders and a stand of trees in sea-

sonal color. As the trees curve

one is invited beyond that which

is seen. A singular tree stands

guard as if to announce wel-

come to the change of season.

The two paintings by Cliff Cavin

document in artistic form the

passing of time and the changes

that only a natural life force can

produce. We are privileged to

share his view, the bold and ju-

bilant strokes of paint, and the

optimism in which Cliff invites

us. The two paintings honor

change and time and embrace

the desire to acknowledge it as

Cliff Cavin shares his impression

of the Perdenales Valley.
