Mission StatementMemphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center is a mechanism for change in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to facilitate long- term positive growth in each person and in the community of the Mid-South.

Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center MGLCC was founded in 1989. At that time, a group of concerned citizens came together to work toward making gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Memphians feel more secure in their surroundings and to create an environment of acceptance and equality in the Mid-South region.

MGLCC is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization serving the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population through a diverse array LGBt-oriented services and programs.

our center is open to the community. We have a clear and robust non-discrimination policy and welcome anyone who abides by our code of ethics.

Letter from the Board of Directors

The Board of Directors and staff of Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center are proud to present our 2011 Annual Report. Inside you will find an accounting of the funds entrusted to us by donors, and how those funds were used to serve our community. these numbers, statistics and lists, while providing a measure of the health and reach of our organization in the past year, are not the entirety of how we measure our worth and success. our success is measured in the number of times we have fed, clothed, housed and protected the youthwho came through our doors, finding a family where they had none. It is measured in the number of meetings we arrange with public officials to ensure that they are aware and educated; in the hundreds of people who know their HIV and StD status; in comments that people from all over the world have made when they sent us donations saying that they understand how important our work is, even though they have never been to the Mid-South. Our success is measured in the lives we touch and in the health of the community of which we are the center.

MGLCC would not exist without your support. We are very proud to have been recognized by Queerty as the most worthwhile LGBt organization in the country for donations. In 2011, the work that we do and our presence in the Mid-South has been recognized by national and international media and blogs such as the Advocate, towleroad, truth Wins out, pinknews in the united Kingdom and more. Your support of MGLCC has a direct impact on the quality of life of all LGBt citizens of the Mid-South. our hope is to create the community in which we ALL want to live. Letter from Executive Director

I am excited to share our community center’s progress! We started 2011 with some serious financial challenges. However, through the inspiring work of long-time supporters, and the amazing generosity of donors from our city and beyond, we were able to finish the year stronger than ever before. Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center will continue to offer life-changing, life-affirming and life-saving programs and services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of the Mid-South.

I offer a heartfelt thanks to our donors and volunteers. You make MGLCC a better agency, and the Mid-South a better place to live. Because of your gifts, we will continue to provide a safe space for struggling youth, HIV screening, support groups, and counseling referrals. We will provide resources for LGBtQ people of all ages, and will continue to be a strong, visible advocate for our community. Sustaining support will allow us to continue work in other areas of interest or need, most especially support for our senior population.

I would also like to thank Martavius Hampton for his immense passion for serving our community. Hiring him as our part-time volunteer coordinator was one of the best decisions I have made at MGLCC. He has strengthened our pool of volunteers to unprecedented levels. three of those wonderful volunteers earned our highest accolade – Volunteer of the Year. our 2011 honorees are Sandee tharnish, phat Ho and Kal Rocket.

We have a renewed spirit of strength and optimism in our Mid-South LGBt community. We celebrate, without shame, what makes us special. We care for, without hesitation, those of us most in need. We overcome, without retreat, the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving our goals. With your support, Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center will continue to be a leader in the LGBt movement.
