Planning the EventPlanning the Event Working with Lisa Breslof of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Mont Pleasant New York Wired Team created a live video lesson on fish anatomy. The shark dissection was used as an introduction for The Art of Ichthyology project for a select group of twenty 7th graders from Mr. Hyndman’s art classes.

Technicians from both institutions worked for two days prior to the lesson, making sure we had a reliable connection. Time was taken to familiarize the Mont Pleasant teachers with the video conference equipment, and proper video conference etiquette.

The Presentation The Presentation The presentation was presented in three parts. There was an introduction and discussion of fish and shark anatomy, comparing the similarities and differences. The second part was the dissection of the shark, a two foot...

…spiny dogfish. A camera person at the museum assisted in focusing their camera for close-up views of the dissection. The students were further assisted in following the procedure with shark anatomy dissection packets. The material was faxed to us by the museum and made into packets. It is the same material used for their college classes.

The third part of the presentation was a period of dialogue between the Mont Pleasant students and Lisa of the museum. The students asked questions throughout the presentation, but became quite animated during this period. They had grown accustomed to the process. In the end, we were invited by Lisa to visit the museum, and plan to in January.

The American Museum of Natural History has just completed a technology renovation. They are looking for schools to participate in live video presentations. Visit the museum on the internet at www.amnh.org
