American Flag

•Betsy Ross hand sowed the first US Flag in 1777

•The flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars

•The American flag has had many changes since Best Ross sowed the first flag

•The original flag only had 13 stars for the 13 colonies, we added more stars when we received more states

The Great Seal of the United States

•On July 4, 1776, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were given the task of creating a seal

•The Great Seal was finished six years later on June 20, 1782.

•In the center of the Seal is the Bald Eagle our nations bird

•eagle holds a scroll in its beak

• The eagle holds an olive branch in its left claw

• A bundle of thirteen arrows in its right claw.

•The olive branch and arrows are symbols for the power of peace and war.

•The bald eagle was chosen June 20, 1782 as the emblem of the United States of American

• Chosen because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks.

• Also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent.

•On the backs of our gold coins, the silver dollar, the half dollar and the quarter, we see an eagle with outspread wings.

•  It is also on Great Seal of the United States and in many places which are interpreters of our nation's authority we see the same emblem.
