Learning ERA

• ERA stands for:

• It is a way of telling how productive a pitcher is during the course of a season, and his career.

Earned Run Average

Page 5: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Earned Run: “Every time a run scores on a hit, sacrifice, sacrifice fly, wild pitch, bunt, base on balls, stolen base, fielder's choice, put-out, or balk a pitcher will be charged an earned run.”

Page 6: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Sacrifice Fly: ”Occurs when a batter’s caught fly ball ends in a runner tagging up and

advancing to the next base”

Page 7: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Wild Pitch: “Any pitch that bounces on the ground and allows the runners to advance to the next base.”

Page 8: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Base on Balls: “An award of first base o a batter receiving four balls pitched outside of the strike zone.”

• Base on balls and the term “walk” mean the same thing.

Page 9: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Stolen Base: “The act of a runner gaining a base without the help of a hit, an error, or a walk. Occurs when the pitched ball is on its way to the batter.”

Page 10: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Fielder’s Choice: When a fielder elects to throw the ball to a point other than first base to record a put-out

Page 11: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Balk: An illegal maneuver by the pitcher when there is a runner or runners on the base. The runners automatically proceed to the next base when balk is called.

Page 12: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!

Learning ERA

• Unearned Run: A run scored as the result of defensive errors

Page 13: CLICK BELOW TO BEGIN! Using a baseball statistic to help you learn math!
