Mission:    The  Children’s  Lifesaving  FoundaEon  (CLF)  is  a  non-‐profit  dedicated  to  posiEvely  transforming  the  lives  of  LA’s  at-‐risk,  very  low-‐income  and  homeless  youth  &  families.      We  help  and  support  homeless  families  to  move  into  new  homes,  provide  a  year-‐round  learning  center  for  their  children,  hold  a  Summer  Camp  Enrichment  Program  for  them  and  an  addiEonal  1,000  at-‐risk  and  homeless  children,  and  provide  a  wonderful  holiday  program,  filled  with  gi]s  and  joy,  each  season.  These  programs  bring  children,  families  and  the  community  together,  and  work  together  to  promote  self-‐sufficiency,  confidence,  and  leadership  skills  that  inspire  the  children  to  become  future  community  contributors.

Since  its  incep*on  in  1993,  the  Children’s  Lifesaving  Founda*on  has:  o   Enriched  the  lives  of  over  50,000  at-‐

risk,  homeless  and  very  low-‐income  children

o   Moved  45  families  into  their  own  homes

o  Awarded  over  45  college  scholarships  to  hard-‐working  and  deserving  at-‐risk  teens.

Page 5: CLF 2012 Annual Report

WHY  WE  DO  THIS  WORK:    o  In  2010,  68%  of  LA  Children  where  living  BELOW  Povery

Level.  Yes.  That  means  their  parents  earn  LESS  than  the  mean  below-‐poverty-‐level  line  of  $23,050  annually.  Total.  For  a  family  of  four…

o  Also  according  to  the  Annie  E.  Casey  FoundaEon’s  data,  an  enormous  66%  of  children  (under  the  age  of  18)  living  in  Los  Angeles  come  from  immigrant  families  (AECF,  KIDS  COUNT)

o  For  LA  school  districts  and  students  in  par*cular,  news  is  also  very  grim:          (Stats  below  from:  LAUS.net  -‐2011)      o  “UnEl  savings  are  idenEfied,  the  (LA)    District  is  planning  to  raise  class  sizes  mainly  in  grades

K-‐8.  Specifically,  grades  K-‐3  would  go  up  to  29  students  to  one  teacher;  grades  4  to  5  would  go  up  by  two  to  33  to  one  teacher;  grades  6  to  8  would  go  up  by  two  to  37  to  one  teacher.”

o  “Including  the  proposed  cuts  for  2011-‐12,  LAUSD  has  cut  its  central  office  budgets  by  53  percent  and  its  local  district  office  budgets  by  58  percent  since  2006.”

Page 6: CLF 2012 Annual Report

Here’s  What…    The  Children’s  Lifesaving  Founda*on’s  four  programs  work  together  to  provide  the  rich  experiences  of  a  happy,  fulfilled  childhood  for  the  at-‐risk  youth  and  homeless  family,  ac*ng  as  a  preventa*ve,  a  reason  for  hope  in  the  future,    weaving  together  the  fine  threads  of    amazing  memories  and  a  feeling    of  community  belonging  for  this  very  specific,  at-‐risk  popula*on  living  in  Los  Angeles.

Page 7: CLF 2012 Annual Report

The  CLF  transforms  the  lives  of  the  en*re  at-‐risk  family  -‐  because  the  benefits  of  our  programs  extend  beyond  the  actual  “end”  of  a  program  *meline.  Our  families  can  return  as  oaen  as  they  wish  to  par*cipate    in  ac*vi*es,  services,  academic  tutoring  for  their  children,  recrea*onal  and  outdoor  camps  in  the  summer,  and  incredible  holiday  experiences,  which  start  on  Thanksgiving  Day.    The  CLF  creates  the  feeling  of  the  extended  family  with  par*cipants  and  volunteers  alike,  and  we  invite  to  see  the  progress  we  have  made  in  2012…

…We  Do!

Page 8: CLF 2012 Annual Report

The  CLF’s  Camp4All  at  Zuma  Beach  was  another  great  success  this  year,  where  we    served  over  1,000  at-‐risk  and  homeless  youth  and  their  parents  through  this  recrea*onal  and  instruc*onal  surfing  program.  Originally  called  the  CLF’s  Summer  Camp  Enrichment  Program-‐  this  great  camp  experience  started  at  the  historic  Circle  X  Ranch  in  Malibu  in  July  of  1993,  and  has  since  served  well  over  50,000  homeless,  at-‐risk  and  low-‐income  youth  and  their  families  since  that  date.    The  par*cipants  came  from  downtown  and  Skid  Row  shelters  and  agencies  serving  this  popula*on.      We  also  had  some  great  new  Volunteers  who  sponsored  lunch  and  provided  a  wonderful  volunteer  staff:  Serve  the  City  LA,  Bonnie  Truong  &  her  Awesome  Crew,  BHGLAAR  (Beverly  Hills-‐Greater  LA  Associa*on  of  Realtors),  and  Pepperdine  C4C,  as  well  as  Jordan  Levy  and  his  great  high  school  volunteer  group,  and  so  many  other  tremendous  volunteers.

Camp4All!

Page 9: CLF 2012 Annual Report

Camp4All  parEcipants  come  from  Union  Rescue  and  LA  Missions,  Para  Los  Ninos,  Covenant  House,  Doors  of  Hope,  A  Place  Called  Home,  Urban  Compass,  Alexandria  House,  Venice  Boys  &  Girls  Club,  Faith  in  Christ  Ministries,  Upward  Bound,  and  many  other  agencies  serving  the  at-‐risk  youth  populaEon  in  Los  Angeles…

The  CLF  is  able  to  provide  the  incredible  experience  of  a  restora*ve,  exci*ng  summer  respite-‐  packed  into  glorious  days  at  Zuma  Beach  on  the  beau*ful  Malibu  coastline.  Campers  are  bused  in  each  day,  and  enjoy  a  fun  picnic  lunch  of  pizza,  sandwiches,  snacks  and  fruit  on  the  beach  each  day.  We  try  to  rotate  the  groups  so  each  group  is  able  to  par*cipate  two  to  three  full  *mes  over  the  course  of  July  &  August.

The  Care  through  College  Program  ignites  the  child’s  desire  to  learn  and  succeed  in  an  aaer-‐school  environment  that  promotes  a  posi*ve  access  towards  academic  goals.  Results  are  rewarded,  celebrated  and  encouraged  by  tutors  and  CLF  Staff  who  have  known  this  core  group  of  children  since  many  of  them  were  very  young.      Aaer  being  members  of  our  Adopt-‐A-‐Family  Program  for  many  years,  the  mothers  of  our  elementary  school  aged  children  asked  us  to  help  with  homework  and  classroom  projects  in  1994.  The  Care  through  College  Program  was  born,  and  we  have  since  been  in  three  different  loca*ons  in  Venice-‐  finally  senling  into  the  Boys  and  Girls  Club  of  Venice  in  the  Fall  of  2008.  Over  the  course  of  the  past  three  years  of  being  at  the  lovely  Boys  and  Girls  Club,  we  have  also  added  several  students  coming  from  the  surrounding  areas,  who  also  come  from  very  low-‐income  families.    The  CLF  serves  a  core  group  of  individual  children  through  this  program,  giving  them  the  dynamic  one-‐on-‐one  academic  anen*on  they  so  need  and  greatly  deserve.  The  children’s  grades  have  been  improving  steadily  with  each  passing  year,  which  is  why  we  con*nue  to  be  so  dedicated  to  this  program…

Our  CTC  Success  Stories  of  2011-‐2012  One  of  the  benefits  to  the  students  in  our  Care  through  College  program  is  the  ability  to    get  a  scholarship  when  they  are  accepted  into  college…This  is  both  an  incenEve  and  a  bonus,  and  one  that  we  find  takes

tremendous  pressure  off  both  the  parent  and  student…These  are  just  a  few  of  our  dynamic  “kids,”  whom  we  have  known  since  they  were    7,  11  and    12  respecEvely…and  who  graduated  in  2012!

How  An  At-‐Risk  Childhood  is  “Saved”

You’ve  seen  what  we  do-‐  Here’s  HOW  we  do  it…

We  call  ourselves  the    Children’s  “Lifesaving”  FoundaEon    for  a  very  good  reason…    It  is  our  belief  that  a  healthy,  happy  childhood  is  the  firm  foundaEon  for  the  rest  of  one’s  enEre  life.  By  providing  outdoor,  recreaEonal,    holiday  and  community    experiences,  coupled    with  NOT  ONLY  academic  help  and    tutoring,  but  the  PROMISE  to  see  the  child  through  to  college  (if  he  or  she  is  willing  to  really  make  that  commitment)  is  our  vital  method:    The    CLF  in  turn  promises    to  help  the    at-‐risk,  very-‐low-‐income,  and/or  homeless  family  move  forward  by  providing    housing  and  emergency  financial  assistance,  as  well  as  providing  a  wealth  of  in-‐kind  donaEons  and  opportuniEes  to  hundreds  of  other  very  low  income  and  homeless  youth,  year-‐round.    Our    programs  and  acEviEes  work  and  fit  perfectly  together-‐to  ensure  not  only  a  stable  childhood  by  aiding  the  ENTIRE  Family,  working  to  make  certain  that  their  childhood  is  one  filled  with  friendship,  hope  of  a  fulfilling  future,  a  desire  to  succeed  academically  and  personally,  and  best  of  all-‐  happy  memories  and  rich  experiences  upon  which  to  draw  in  their  adult  lives.      THE

MARIA D’ANGELO, SEAN MCCAFFERY, FRANCESCA MCCAFFERYFor Kids’ SakeWhen Maria D’Angelo started the Children’s Lifesaving Foundation in 1993, she set out to provide badly needed medical and social services for homeless and at-risk children. As the name suggests, this community outreach program is indeed a lifesaver. D’Angelo runs the organization with her son and daughter, Sean and Francesca McCaffery, who learned about altruism early on. “As long as I can remember, we were doing something to help homeless children and their families, feeding them on Thanksgiving Day, gathering clothes or purchasing toys,” Sean McCaffery said. “My mother always instilled the importance of helping others.”

As time went by, D’Angelo learned that many children had never been out of their inner-city neighborhoods, never been to a beach, a theme park or camp. In addition to support services, she decided to literally give them a breath of fresh air. She established the spring and summer camp enrichment program, and watched as underprivi-leged children were transformed and inspired by the natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains. To date, more than fifty thousand children, teens and parents have attended camp programs at the Circle X Ranch in Malibu. CLF programs also include Adopt-A-Family, which helps move homeless children and their parents out of shelters and into new apartments and homes. The group continues to help families with tutoring and scholarships.

The reward for D’Angelo and her family is watching lives changed forever. “I was put on this earth to help people,” Sean McCaffery said. “It is a blessing to do this kind of work.”

As D’Angelo sees it, her job is a labor of love with benefits that last a lifetime. “It’s all part of making a child complete and offering them an opportunity to compete.” 9
