It was with a great sense of pride that on returning from my time away from Townsville during August, I found the Club ‘powering away’ at its respective projects. We have a talented and dedicated membership and have so much to be grateful for.

It is now two months on from our late June Membership Workshop and I am keen to receive feedback from members on how they think we are traveling. I feel a sense of renewed purpose and energy from members, but seek your reassurance that we are moving toward the agreed

goals under membership retention, fundraising and community. There are many competing demands on our time and I would like to know that members feel comfortable with the pace and focus of our Club activities. Please don’t hesistate to contact me by phone (0488977874) or drop me an email ([email protected]).

August Highlights

We are very appreciative of Vic who, at a moments notice, organised a sausage sizzle for a ‘desperate’ Auction House; and to Shirley and Fred who were able to assist on the day.

On the subject of sausages, hasn’t our partnership with the Sporting Shooters grown with our now regular twice monthly BBQ. Also, and quite unexpectedly, the Club was offered a further opportunity on the following weekend to earn some good money providing peoplepower to assist with catering at their State Competition. As a result, Ron and I spent a lovely weekend with the good folks at the range.

I also take this opportunity to recognise the initiative that Shirley and Doreen took in updating our Club Banners, purchasing the fabric and the hours spent sewing external club banneretts.

Well done Mary and Chitra for tackling our Club Uniform at our monthly Themed Dinner Meeting. As I was reminded this was a topic that had been on the ‘Club’s books’ for at least 2 years. It was always going to be a challenge to form a general concensus on style and colour, particularly where consideration needed to be given to Club history, personal preferences and Club branding. However, the preparation work that you both put into presenting the material and the facilitation of member’s feedback on the night, worked toward advancing a resolution and I look forward to the final product.

Keith’s organisation of our presence at the Garden Expo with the addition of the hours put in by members, has gone a long way to lifting our profile in the Townsville and Lions’ Community.

The Month Ahead

At our first meeting of the month we will be welcoming our District Governor Brian Hewitt and guests. As I am discovering there are a great many activities working in the background at both the Zone and District levels, one of which is the Club Legacy initiative. I am sure that DG Brian will be keen to promote this initiative and I encourage members to give consideration to how we at Townsville, Cleveland Bay might participate. Don’t be shy to ask Brian about the initiative on the night.

Cheers

Sue

Garden Expo Riverway 27 August 16 Les Hyland

I can’t comment on the Sunday, but the Saturday was very successful from a sales point of view. We

were well staffed With Jeff, Dianne, and myself there almost all day [08.00 - 16.00] Lynn helped when

she was not off surveying plant stalls and Melissa was there right through the middle shift. Keith was

around at the start and finish suffering from a cough so he took the middle of the day off. It was cold

from 08.00 to 09.30 when it warmed up.

You could say we were a “mixed” stall with plants supplied by Jane selling well, Lions Cakes were in

demand too but it was on the Melbourne Cup tickets that we did much better than we expected with

over 8 books sold during the day. The best time was, undoubtedly, between 10.00 and 12.00 with a

notable drop off over lunch time and a good but slow afternoon. Townsville Central Lions were touting

for members at both gates so we did not have too many membership enquiries.

All that being said it was a pleasant day and was a good promotion for the Club with out any enormous

effort. Well worth doing again !

We lived in Mosman, North Sydney until 1948.

We then moved to Port Kembla where we lived in

a flat. On the ground floor was the

Harbourmaster, we were in the middle and on the

top floor was the Weather Bureau. The flats

stood in a large compound with Army bunkers

and was fenced with a high wire fence topped

with barbed wire. We were there for a year

before moving again to a large house in

Wollongong which was the first Fire Station for

Wollongong, built in the 1800’s. In the yard

there was a large well, 2 fire hydrants and a big

shed in which was stored Army Tanks, Jeeps and

Trucks and we played on them. I learned to ride

horses at about the age of 10 as my Dad said that

a bike was unladylike. Who was he kidding ? In

1957, Dad left the Army and we moved to

Corrimal.

SSAA NEWS

I would like to thank all of the Members who have expressed their interest in helping out at the sausage sizzles at the Range. The first two have gone without a hitch (If you don’t count unplanned sightseeing trip on the way). Sue and Fred did such a good job that they ran out of sausages, great stuff. I’ve attached a copy of the roster in the newsletter so everyone will know when their on. Please if something unforeseen happens and you can’t make it please try and find a replacement and let me know how you get on. Thanks.

Planning for the Charity shoot is proceeding with the steering committee meeting on 10 Sep to iron out the details from our side of the fence. The SSAA has also been hard at work and want to have a get together early next month, so things are moving forward. Remember this is our event so please pass on the info to as many people as you can.

Cheers

Vic
