Blue Mass Honoring our First Responders: Saint Francis de Sales will celebrate a “Blue Mass” honoring our local police officers and first responders on Sunday, September 11, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

The “Blue Mass” has been celebrated throughout the country for several years to acknowledge the service these courageous men and women give to our community. UPCOMING SPECIAL COLLECTION: St. Vincent de Paul September 11, 2016 2016 Louisiana Floods September 18, 2016Recently we have seen the terrible news of the historic flooding in Louisiana. The region is experiencing what is being called the worst domestic disaster since Hurricane Sandy. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters. Lives have been cruelly altered. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those living in communities who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of security. Our prayer and material support is urgently needed to help rebuild lives. As a result, Bishop Campbell requests that all parishes in the Diocese of Columbus participate in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ emergency collection to assist the victims of the 2016 Louisiana Floods. This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses. If you would like to make your contribution electronically (EFT), please go to our website www.stfrancisparish.net and click on the Online Giving link. There you can set up a donation schedule to fit your needs. Need help? Contact Dave Stenson at ext. 237.

What are you doing with your Wednesday evenings? Wouldn’t you rather have yours filled with things other than television, helping the kids with their homework, mowing the grass, surfing the web, or doing the laundry? While those things certainly have their place in our lives, so also do things like stimulating conversation, thoughtful personal reflection, and expanding our knowledge. You can have that by becoming a part of our “ABC: About Being Catholic” faith formation program! ABC is an introduction to the Catholic faith for inquirers and those seeking to become Catholic, and a refresher course for Catholic adults who wish to go deeper in their faith. Join us this Wednesday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the school library – and invite a friend to come with you!

The ROSARY…and the Novena for America…

A 54 Day Rosary Novena began on August 15, 2016…titled the Novena for America, and is set to conclude on October 7, feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Spearheaded by Fr. Richard Heilman and Fr. Stephen Imbarrato of Priests for Life, they said the following: “What better time to do this than now, in this election year, with the terrorism going on, and the condition of the world and our nation. We have an immoral and corrupt government that is becoming more and more tyrannical. The fact of the matter is: We need a CONVERSION OF OUR CULTURE,

BUT MORE SPECIFICALLY, OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS OR LEADERSHIP. This novena and Rosary Rally (on October 7th) is all part of the effort we need to end preborn child killing and attacks on marriage and the family.” United States Cardinal Raymond Burke officially endorses the Novena for Our Nation. He said: “There is no doubt that our beloved nation is in one of the worst crisis it has ever seen…a profound moral crisis. The first response to this crisis is fervent prayer and, in particular, prayer through the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary…who is also the patroness of our nation.” Today is a perfect day…the right day, to join in this novena. Pray for America.Remember, you and your family are always invited to take part in our weekly Rosary for Peace, every Saturday at 4:35 p.m., just before Mass.

YOU ARE INVITED TO AN AFTERNOON OF PRAYERFUL REMEMBERANCE AND INTERCESSION:A prayer service for those touched by Abortion

Friday, September, 16th 2016: 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Jessing Center on the campus of the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.

The hidden wounds of abortion affect each of us. Whether it be one’s neighbor, co-worker, friend, relative, maybe oneself….as a community we have all been touched. We will gather to pray and intercede on behalf of our entire nation, seeking forgiveness and healing in God’s merciful love.

This program was created by Theresa Bonopartis of Lumina/Hope and Healing after Abortion and being offered by Bethesda Post Abortion Healing Ministry. The afternoon will include Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. No registration is needed.

For further information contact Kathy Conway 614-309-7958 or email [email protected].

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for September: Universal: Centrality of the Human Person – That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center.

Evangelization: Mission to Evangelize – That by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on Scripture, Christians may become more aware of their mission to evangelize.

Endowment Stewardship “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16) This gospel passage calls us to charity. We have an opportunity to live this gospel message by supporting the future of our parish community. St. Francis de Sales’ future is supported by over $57,000.00 in endowment funds managed by The Catholic Foundation. St. Francis de Sales, Newark Elementary School Endowment Fund for the operating needs of school

St. Francis de Sales, Newark/ Mount Calvary Cemetery Endowment Fund for parish community improvement, maintenance, personnel, activities

St. Francis de Sales, Newark/ Mount Calvary Cemetery Endowment Fund also for parish community improvement, maintenance, personnel, activities

St. Francis de Sales, Newark/ Thomas McGann Tuition Assistance Endowment Fund for tuition assistance for students at St. Francis de Sales Elementary

Twylah & Charles Grunewald Memorial Endowment Fund for scholarships

We work with The Catholic Foundation as our trusted partner because they assure peace of mind that our endowments are invested in alignment with our Catholic teachings and values. Ministry Reflections on the Great Commission & the Great Commandment

We CONCLUDE sharing the responses of ministry groups to the posed questions. A running list of published reflections can be found on our website under LATEST NEWS. Our newly restructured Parish Ministry Council will be reviewing these reflections on an ongoing basis as we look to respond with renewed joy, energy and commitment.

PARISH OUTREACH

Adopt-A-Family Giving Tree

1. How does this committee or group respond to the Great Commission, the Great Commandment and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in our activities and outreach.

The Giving Tree program is one that reaches out to the community by showing the true meaning of Christmas and Christ’s gift of love to us and to those who are in our parish but also to those we serve who are outside out parish. We provide concrete gifts (clothes and gifts for children, food for families) as well as spiritual gifts (inviting them to our church and showing them respect, dignity and love by providing the gifts to parents face to face)

2. How is prayer an important component of our meeting time together?

Although we do not meet regularly, we often rely on prayer to help us decide how best to help the families we are serving. It can be frustrating sometimes to deal with those who are often difficult to reach, have limited transportation and many needs. We always in those cases pray for guidance and have not yet encountered a problem we could not solve.

3. How do our activities/programs address the needs of our parish? We provide the unique opportunity to give to those you do not

know, to reflect on the giving spirit of Christmas and to use the “materialistic” part of Christmas to benefit others. Those parishioners who participate directly in the program and come in contact with the parents get the opportunity to be a servant to the poor and receive much more in return.

4. How do our activities/programs address the needs of those outside our parish?

All of our needy families come from outside the parish. We work along with the Salvation Army who provides us with our list of children to serve.

5. Do we have enough people in our committee/group to accomplish our goals?

There are only 3 of us who run this program. Every year we ask for volunteers, and every year we think we will not have enough, but we always do. We link with other ministries, like the Scouts who help year after year. Our biggest concern is that when we are physically unable to continue, that no one will take over.

6. Are there activities or programs we sponsor which no longer seem to be effective or address current needs?

I cannot think of any at this time.

The first Women of St. Francis meeting of the 2016-2017 year will be held Thursday, September 8, 7:00 p.m. in Johnson Hall. Come join us to visit “Newark Thru Time.” Our speakers, Sandy Gartner and Connie Rutter,

authors of 5 books covering Licking County, Newark, Lancaster, and Buckeye Lake, will show pictures of the many historical and interesting sights (both then and now) in the downtown area. You will see pictures of the Pennsylvania Station, Canal Locks, the many murals and the Jail, just to name a few. They will also talk of the future plans for the area. Both ladies are members of the Downtown Newark Association and are passionate about seeing the downtown area become an inviting destination for local and out of town visitors.Plans for the Ladies Brunch (October 22) and the Fall Party (November 10) will be discussed. Please check the September Generations for more complete info on these happenings.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry donation for September is canned fruit (no cranberries, please). In May we collected: cake mix (50 boxes), frosting mix (27 boxes), Jell-O/Pudding (64 boxes), pie filling (4 cans). The International Charity is the Dominican Sisters of Peace, who are celebrating the 800th Anniversary of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans). Our donations will assist the Sisters in their mission work. For questions or more information, please contact President Amber Mitchell at 740-403-2738.

MUSICAL OPPORTUNITIES BEGIN AGAIN: We welcome newcomers to join our various ensembles for this new year – we would love to meet you and Dr. Christopher Urbiel, Director of Music, will be glad to speak with you about your talents and interests. For inquiries and for the current schedule of rehearsals and other events (since schedules can change periodically), please feel free to contact Christopher.

The Parish Choir (open to singers of high school age and up) sings for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass during the academic year, and for other Mass times as scheduled, in addition to feast days and special choral events such as Advent Lessons and Carols. Rehearsals are held on most Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the choir loft. The first rehearsal is on Thursday, September 8.

The Youth Choir (open to singers of elementary school age –grades 1 through 8) sings for many Sunday Masses and additional commitments as announced. Members who attend our parish school also sing for school liturgies. Rehearsals are held on most Thursdays from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the choir loft. The next rehearsal is on Thursday, September 8.

The Saint Cecilia Choir sings for all funerals at St. Francis de Sales. This choir is open to all who can commit to the usual funeral time of 10:30 a.m. (although you do not need to be available every time, and some funerals are held at other times). The choir assembles for each funeral at 10:15 a.m. in the Choir Loft. Please consider joining us in this important ministry to the bereaved.

The Schola Cantorum (open to all singers) is a choir that meets to study chant as well as other forms of liturgical music, thereby enriching our worship. The group sings for two weekend Masses per month (with participation on certain holy days and special events) and rehearses on two Tuesday evenings per month. The first rehearsal is on Tuesday, September 6.

The Cantors chant the Psalm, Alleluia, and Communion Antiphon for Mass. Music reading ability is very desirable for this ministry, but can be taught and developed. Cantors rehearse at 7:00 p.m. Thursdays (before the Parish Choir rehearsal), in addition to individual rehearsals held as needed. It is helpful for cantors to be a member of one of our choirs. Rehearsals are held on most Thursdays throughout the year. The first rehearsal is on Thursday, September 8.
