Personal Energy Use Audit
Special Thanks to Prof. Ali Shakouri &Oxana Pantchenko
The mission of this report is to make you aware of your energy use and how to use energy more efficiently, thus reducing you carbon footprint
The objective of this report is for students to get a full picture of the supply and demand of energy used in their daily life.
While working on this report, students will • Identify all energy services and their energy sources• Obtain historical records of energy usage,• Determine the energy consumption for each service,• Analyze the information,• Draw conclusions and• Make recommendations.
Special Report
Special ReportDue: Tuesday, May 19th, 2011 at beginning of class. Report is to be written on paper
Grading: 20% of your final grade
Homework 25%Midterm 25%Energy Audit 20%Final 30%
This is a revision of original estimate.
Special Report Outline Abstract (10 pts) Introduction (should include information about student) (10pts) Calculations and Analysis
List of energy services and sources (10 pts) Transportation (10 pts) Hot water consumption (15 pts) Electricity usage (kWh / day ) & (J / week)
Calculated from labels (5 pts) Measured with “Kill a Watt” (10 pts)
When appliances are on When appliances are off
Total Carbon emission (5 pts.) Conclusion (should include qualitative and quantitative analysis
summary from previous section). Should answer following questions (25 pts) Which energy services are the biggest energy users? How would you expect energy use for each service to change
though out the year? Any surprises or noteworthy points? From working on this project, would you now consider alternative
energy sources for particular services? From the calculations above, suggest a replacement for one of
the high energy appliances? Would you now consider a habit or lifestyle change? Compare your results to the data collected by David MacKay?

Hot Water Consumption (15pts)Heat Energy
Q = m x cp x (T 1 – T2) cp : specific heat constant, 4190 J / kg C T 1 : temperature of the hot water T 2 : temperature of the cold water
ExampleJohan uses 50 L of hot water per day from an electric hot water system. The water is heated from 18C to 60C. The heat energy contained in the water,
Q = m x cp x (T 1 – T2) Efficiency of Electric Water Heater is 0.7 to 0.8
Efficiency of Gas Water Heater is 0.6 to 0.75

Electricity Usage (total 30 pts)Calculated from labels (15 pts)
Electricity Usage cont. If an item operates on AC, use the following
formula with an estimate of the power factor,
Power = Voltage (V) x Current (A) x Power Factor
If the appliance contains a motor, then use 0.8 unless it is either very cheap or very small, then use 0.6
If the appliance is some electronic item, (TV, battery charger), use 0.85
If the appliance contains only heating element or light, then use 1.
Electricity Usage (total 30 pts) Measured with “Kill a Watt” meter (15 pts)
When appliances are on When appliances are off
Check out from TA or Tutorsat section or tutorials or fromProf. Vesecky at office hoursbeginning next week
You have 3 days to use it orover the weekend – otherswill be waiting so be quick.
Use of meter can be done in aday or two.
Missing Kill a Watt meters willbe charged to your studentaccount
