The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that, in the United States alone, over 12 million hospital/doctor visits per year can be attributed to Staph and MRSA infections.
A 2009 survey that was conducted in 650 high school and college athletic programs across the country revealed that 76% of the respondents’ athletic programs had experienced at least one bacterial or viral skin infection. According to the CDC, education of athletes and coaches, good personal hygiene, and disinfection of shared athletic equipment are essential to reduce MRSA infection in sports.
Three studies by the Texas State Dept of Health found that the infection rate among football players was 16x the national average.
