DEFORESTATION

Deforestation refers to the removal of a forest or a stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use such as farms, ranches or urban use.

Page 5: Clean & Green India - Mahavir International Project

• About half of the world’s tropical forests have been cleared. [FAO]

• Forests currently cover about 30% of the world’s land mass. [National Geographic]

• Forest loss contributes between 6-12% of annual global CO2 emissions. [Nature Geoscience]

• About 36 football fields worth of trees lost every minute. [World Wildlife Fund (WWF)]

Statistics :-

Why Deforestation ? To make more land available for housing and urbanization. To harvest timber to create commercial items such as paper, furniture and homes. To create ingredients that are highly prized consumer items such as the oil from palm trees. To create room for cattle ranching.

Global Warming..

Page 9: Clean & Green India - Mahavir International Project
Page 10: Clean & Green India - Mahavir International Project

Gases act like the glass walls of a greenhouse, allowing some of the sun’s rays to enter, reflecting back harmful radiation from the sun and keeping some warmth close to the earth, making the earth a place where we can live. This natural process is called the greenhouse effect and when the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it results in global warming.

Why are forests important in climate

change ?

PROTECTED FOREST

When trees grow, they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere

When trees die, carbon is released back into the atmosphere

Burning trees causes the stored carbon to be released

back into the air

So when forests are destroyed, large amounts of carbon is released into

the air
