NOT IN OUR HOUSE: The Dodgers this afternoon play under the
sunshine in a rare 12:10 matinee as they continue a six-game
homestand (0-2) with the finale of a three-game set with the National
League East-leading Washington Nationals. Los Angeles is looking
to avoid its first sweep of the 2017 season and the first at the hands
of the Nats since Aug. 26-28, 2008 at Nationals Park. Following an
off day and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s Blue Diamond
Gala tomorrow, the Dodgers close out the homestand this weekend
with three games against the Cincinnati Reds.
Since becoming the Nationals, Washington has never
swept the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, with the last
franchise sweep taking place Aug. 28-30, 1987. In that
series, the Expos won three consecutive one-run games
over Los Angeles (two in extra innings), in games started
by Orel Hershiser, Shawn Hillegas and Fernando
Valenzuela.
At 21-10 (.677), the Dodgers own the second best home
record in baseball, trailing only the Diamondbacks (22-8,
.733). Not to go unnoticed, the Nationals are 21-11 on the
road, which is the second best mark away from home in the
National League.
The Dodgers lead the National League with a +81 run
differential, 23 behind the Astros (+104) for the MLB lead
and nine ahead of the Nationals, who rank third (+73).
Los Angeles has gone 6-3 against the NL East this season
and are the only team in baseball that has yet to participate
in Interleague play this year. Los Angeles will face their
first American League opponent, the Indians, June 13-15 in
Cleveland at Progressive Field.
REAL RECOGNIZE REAL: The Dodgers and Nationals met in
the NLDS last season and have largely picked up where they left off,
at the top of the National League. While the Nationals have been
doing it with the bats, the Dodgers, per usual, have one of the best
pitching staffs in baseball:

#VOTE BLUE: On Monday, MLB revealed its second All-Star
balloting update, with Corey Seager still leading all NL shortstops
with 604,783 votes in his bid for a second consecutive selection to
the Midsummer Classic. Were he to win the vote, Seager would be
the first Dodger shortstop to earn a starting assignment in the All-
Star Game since Bill Russell in 1980. Yasmani Grandal (5th),
Justin Turner (3rd) and Yasiel Puig (14th) were also among the
leaders at their respective positions. Fans are encouraged to
#VoteBlue at Dodgers.com/Vote.
STRONG LIKE OAKS: Congratulations are in order for Triple-A
Oklahoma City starter Trevor Oaks, who was named the Pacific
Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 29–June
4. Oaks made just one start, firing 7.0 scoreless innings and allowing
just two hits while striking out seven without a walk last Monday at
New Orleans. In addition, the Riverside native hit his first
professional home run in the game, a three-run shot in the 11-1
victory. This season, Oaks is 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 11 games (10
starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City. This is Oaks’ second-career
weekly PCL Award as he won the honor last season for the perios
spanning Aug. 15-21. The 2014 seventh-round draft selection joins
teammate Wilmer Font (May 15-21) as the only OKC Dodgers to
win a weekly pitching award this season.
IT’S NOT JUST YOU: Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw takes the
mound for his 13th start of the season this afternoon fresh of
becoming the third-fastest pitcher to 2,000 strikeouts and looking to
continue his career brilliance against the Nationals:
CAREER ERA VS. WAS—ACTIVE PLAYERS (MIN. 50 IP).
Clayton Kershaw, LAD 2.02 (20 ER/89.0 IP)
Anibal Sanchez, DET 2.16
Ubaldo Jimenez, BAL 2.51
Cole Hamels, TEX 2.67
Madison Bumgarner, SF 2.69
Kershaw’s 10-career victories over the Nats (10-2) are
easily the most he has against any team outside the NL
West with only his seven wins over the Mets coming close.
At Dodger Stadium, he’s 7-1 with a 1.75 ERA (11 ER/56.2
IP) in eight starts and that loss on Aug. 6, 2010 was the last
time the Nationals beat him. Since then, the three-time Cy
Young Award winner has won eight consecutive regular
season starts against Washington, going 8-0 with 0.88 ERA
(6 ER/61.2 IP) in that time.
Kershaw ranks among the NL leaders in starts (12, T-1st),
wins (7, T-2nd), ERA (2.28, 1st), WHIP (0.90, 2nd), innings
pitched (83.0, T-2nd), strikeouts (92, T-5th) and opponents’
average (.210, 7th).
THE CHASE IS ON: Dodger infielder Chase Utley went 1-for-3
with a walk and scored the only Dodger run last night. He has been
one of the club’s hottest hitters of late, batting .329 (25-for-76) with
three doubles, three triples, three homers and 14 RBI in his last 26
games since May 9. In that span, Utley ranks among the NL leaders
in batting average (10th), triples (2nd), on-base percentage (.422, 5th)
and slugging percentage (.566, 13th).
BEST IN THE BIZ: The Dodgers continue to lead the Majors with
a 3.20 team ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and a .227 opponents’ batting
average while leading the NL in strikeouts (574).
The Los Angeles bullpen leads the NL with a 2.65 ERA (60
ER/204.0 IP), a 1.07 WHIP (1st MLB) and 241 strikeouts.
In addition, Dodger relievers have allowed only 23.4% of
inherited runners to score, the fifth-best mark in the Majors.
Kenley Jansen ranks seventh in the NL with a 1.17 ERA
and has struck out 40 of the 85 batters he’s faced this year
without issuing a walk, as he continues to extend his MLB
record for most strikeouts to open a season without a walk
(Source: Elias Sports Bureau). The previous record was 35,
set by Adam Wainwright in 2013.
Just ahead of Jansen on the ERA list is Pedro Baéz, who
lowered his ERA to 1.05 (3 ER/25.2IP) last night with a
scoreless frame. The right-hander has not been scored upon
in his last six outings (7.1 IP) dating to May 23. In that time
he has struck out 10 and walked two while limiting hitters
to a .120 average (3-for-25).
THE PREFERRED TERM IS LEGEND: This Saturday prior to
the 7:10 p.m. contest against the Reds is the always popular Old-
Timer’s Game, presented by Security Benefit, and featuring a bevy
of Dodger legends. As an added twist, the squads will be managed
by Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda (home team) and Joe Torre
(road). On Saturday, batting practice begins at 4:00 p.m. while
introductions, followed by a 2-3 inning game, get going at 5:00 p.m.
