Game OnGame On It’s no secret that I’m a big sports fan. And I’m not just talking baseball and football. I’m talking base‐ball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, the college versions of all of those sports, NASCAR, Olympic sports, X‐Games, and more. I’m also not just talking about the sporting events themselves. That includes reading sports biographies, watching sports documentaries, and following athletes on social media. One of the next logical questions is, why?! Good question. There are aspects of sport that are incredibly intriguing to me and much of it is related to the dynamic of teams and what makes them great. Two of the commonalities within most great teams are having a singular focus, 

whether they are a team of 12, 25 or 53, and having a selfless desire to do everything they can for their teammates. That’s one of the reasons that the Royals resonated with Kansas City so much the past few years. It was more than a team that won games, it was a team that clearly cared for one another and each guy wanted to do whatever he could for the other 24 guys. When I was a kid I watched a successful team that didn’t have that connec‐tion. The 1991 Falcons won the franchise’s first playoff game since 1978. I am a Falcons 

fan, but I still don’t like that team. The egos from Head Coach through all of the stars were simply off‐putting. I was happy for the success, but there was a part of me that just didn’t feel good about it. It wasn’t a team I was proud to call “mine.”   Now what does any of this have to do with the church? The church, I believe, is intended to be the epitome of a great team; a group of people focused on one goal that go out of their way to actively search for and find any opportunity to take care of the others within the team. How attractive would that be to be a part of? How attractive would that be to people who see it from the outside? A great story I heard was about when Ian Kennedy was a free agent and deciding whether or not to sign with Kansas City. One of the people he talked to was a former teammate of his in San Diego. That former teammate absolutely raved about the Royals organization and how Ian and his family would love be‐ing a part of it. His former teammate was James Shields who had been gone from Kansas City for over a year, and yet he still was, in essence, helping their recruiting efforts because of the love he had for them. That speaks volumes about the culture. How amazing would it be for that to be said of both our church and the church in America? Can you imagine what that would look like? (Hint: It would look a lot like the early church described in the book of Acts)  So what would it take for that to truly be the case? I believe it starts when every person within the body is intentional about caring for the whole rest of the body. It starts when we lay down all of our

agendas and completely buy into the same focus. In Ecclesiastes it says that “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” There’s a football coaching analogy that is similar, where you have someone break a small group of pencils and then have them try to break 53 pencils at once. The message being that when the whole team is in unity, they can’t be broken. That’s my prayer for the church and for our church. The world we live in craves community and authenticity. There’s no formula for that other than just really pursuing the heart of God and exhibiting it within the church. I believe we will see great things if we all make this our hope. And not just an empty hope, akin to spitting in the wind, but a desire that we pursue intentionally and with vigor every single day. Let that be said about us.

Wonder of wonders Wonder of wonders   The world is filled with wonders, writes Nathaniel Olson. Consider chemistry: Salt is formed by two poisonous substances (sodium and chlorine). The alnico magnet, the world’s strongest, contains three nonmagnetic substances (aluminum, nickel and cobalt). And water consists of oxygen (which is flammable) and hydrogen (which burns easily); yet water puts out fires!   

That pales in comparison to the wonder of salvation through Jesus. Every day, Ol‐son writes, Jesus transforms filthy, hopeless sinners into new, forgiven creations. “On the skid rows of our cities, in wealthy and poor homes, in jungles … whenever any soul wants Christ, the wonder of the new birth is taking place.”   

Our God is the true Wonder of wonders. “None can compare” (Psalm 40:5).

Words that describe the Arctic for sure, a fascinating region like no other in the world. But go back and read those words again‐they can also be used to describe the coolest book on the planet‐the Bible. During our time exploring Operation Arctic we will be building on the following BIBLE acronym each day: 

B ‐  Book of Books ‐ The first day, we'll discover there's just no book like it, unique in so many ways! 

I  ‐  Incredible Impact ‐ The second day, we'll explore the impact the Bible's teachings have had upon 

    our world! 

B ‐  Bedrock Base ‐ The third day, we'll see there's no shifting sand here ‐ we've got the Rock of God's 

    Word to base our lives on! 

L  ‐  Letter of Love ‐ The fourth day, we'll encounter the best love letter ever, written to us by God      himself!

March Update  

Well February was definitely an exciting month in the life of the youth group here at CBC. Before I share the main reason for celebration, I just want to highlight some of the key events that took place with our youth group this past month.  

Besides our normal weekly routine, on February the 11th, we hosted our annual Valentine’s fund rais‐ing banquet. It was a fun night, filled with delicious food, fun games and great fellowship. Thanks to the generosity of our church, we were able to raise close to $800 for our summer mission trip. So a BIG thank you to everyone who not only came, but also gave so generously…we truly do ap‐preciate your support. I failed to mention this on the night of the dinner, but I want to say a tremendous thank you to Jeniffer Davis, Honour Coones and Rachel Valenti for not 

only cooking all the delicious food, but also handling childcare at the same time. It was an amazing ef‐fort and one that should not go unnoticed.  

In celebration of all the youth’s hard work, we took the kids to see the movie SING at AMC and then to McDonalds afterwards. A total of 11 of us ended up going and we had a great time together.  

Now to the exciting news that I mentioned earlier! On February 19th, the church voted to hire Austin Reser to be our new youth pastor, along with his wife Dani. We are super excited to have them on board and look forward to all the great things that they are going to accomplish during their time here at CBC. With that said, this officially ends Kevin’s and my time as fill‐in leaders for the youth. As I have mentioned before, we have thoroughly enjoyed this past year and truly do ap‐preciate all the support, encouragement and prayers that we have received from each and every one of you. It’s been a privilege getting to lead such an amazing group of kids and we are confident that they will be in great hands un‐der Austin and his wife Dani!     Thanks again for all the love and support that you provide.     Youth Leadership Team

Dani and I would like to start off with sharing our appreciation for the support and kindness every‐one has shown us in this process. We are very eager and excited to get to know everyone more. We would also like to thank John, Kevin, Joe and anyone else who helped for all of their hard work in leading the youth in the time of transition. In the few times we have been a part of a youth activity, it is clear they did a wonderful job. We look forward to continuing where they left off, with their help. We are very blessed to be joining Claycomo Baptist Church and leading the youth program to grow in their love of Christ.

Life is hard!Life is hard!  

Can you relate to that statement? Are you going through a hard moment right now? Just came through one? Been through one?  

 To these questions, the answer is YES! I hate to break it to you if you are still living in a bit of a bub‐ble, you are going to go through it again!   But I am finding out more and more, that we aren't meant to go at it alone! Why oh why do we try? Have you been asked the question, " How are you doing? And this is your response, " I'm doing good."  Are we really doing good or is that our way of not wanting to be real, showing others that we struggle, being vulnerable and opening up.....or fill in your blank________________.  Why do we think it's a sign of weak‐ness to go at life alone?  The journey into the Promised Land was not done by one per‐son, it happened as a community. Stop and think of Adam and Eve in the garden. (Gen 2:18) "It is not good for man to be alone.” It is not a sign of weakness but actually it’s displaying an inner strength to ask for help.  God never created us to go at it alone. He created us to have fellowship with him and with fellow believers.....as in the body of Christ the local church.   Picture with me the fleeing from Egypt. Pharaoh told Moses that the people could leave. The Israel‐ites fled and came to the Red Sea. The people’s thoughts had to be, "We've fled and now we are go‐ing to die.” “Maybe we should have stayed” (my words). But, when God parted the Red Sea, they had to step out in faith and trust, even when it was hard. They had to do the same thing when they reached the Jordan River in the Promised Land. It wasn't until the priests stepped into the water that the miracle happened. What’s holding you back? Is it fear? When we know the truth and God has asked us to do something, obedience is the ONLY way through to the other side. The thing is, fear isn't going to go away. But God is asking us to step out and let him take control.  Remember that over and over the Israelites chose to rebel and where did that leave them? Hello...... wandering the desert for a LONG time, then exiled from the Promised Land. (Deut 6:3‐6) Listen to how Moses starts this.... “Hear Israel, be careful to obey so that it may go well with you.” He goes on to tell them to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.”  Not all hard times are because of an act of sin or rebellion. Sometimes hard times are because of loss or grief. Often some are simply because we live in a fallen world. Things are never going to be as we wish. God doesn't place a target on His children's back and seek to make their life miserable. But as any parent knows, obedience is essential!

There are three places we can end up through our choices: desert, Promised Land or exile. Learn from the Israelites who wandered the desert for 40 years, exiled from the Promise Land for 400 years... Why? DISOBEDIENCE! Do not deprive yourself and your family of the blessings that God has planned and please do not misuse the blessings that He does give you.  We ALL struggle! But I am ever so grateful that, as believers, we are un‐der His grace and He is always there to help us and bring us back to where we belong.  Don't settle in the land of hard places. Don't settle in the desert. Don't settle in depression. Don't settle in this is the way its always been done. Don't settle in fear. Don't settle anywhere but in the CENTER of all that God has for you!  Psalm 23:6‐‐"Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."   We as believers are made for the PROMISED LAND!    In Christ Alone,                      Rhonda Gordon                      CBC Children’s Director

Parents/Grandparents, are you looking for a Bible app for your kids? Bible for Kids‐‐‐ YouVersion  

This is an interactive Bible app that you can download to your phone or tablet. It takes them through the OT and NT. Each Bible story is told and each has questions, for older kids to answer, or items that the kids can tap and it comes to life. They have puzzle pieces that you have to put in order the way the story was told. It will read you the story or you can shut that mode off and older kids can read it themselves.  

Tuesday night during the City Union Mission graduation, I had Lauren C. in my lap and she fell in love with the story In the Beginning. On day 7, all rested in the garden, even the animals. You can tap on a sleeping animal and it reveals them dreaming and counting sheep until the elephant follows the sheep and smashes the fence. Lauren was belly laughing and her whole body shook as she hit it over and over again. It truly is a lot of fun and learning Biblical truths.  

I encourage you (Allison told me I needed to write this up and share with you, so I am doing as she asked) to download it for your kids or Grandkids. What better way to use technology than to teach them Biblical truths!

ALWAYS TOGETHER.ALWAYS TOGETHER.  

Starting February 26, we began a pilgrimage in the Scriptures asking God to show us the depth, beauty, and importance of our relationship with one another in our life together as His church. The current trending description for this is biblical community. That is an excellent description which I believe will help us understand how we can best communicate the significance of the local church to fellow believers as well as to those who do not yet have a relationship with our Lord. As your pastor, I personally view the understanding and living out of this truth to be paramount to everything we have done and will continue to do in fulfilling Jesus’ calling on our lives. 

 In light of all I have just said, I ask…actually much more like Paul said in the New Testament, I beseech…you all to be praying for me and our ministe‐rial staff—Jamie and Austin (by the way, welcome, Austin! Jump on in! We will get you up‐to‐speed as we all con‐tinue running the race set before us). I believe our Lord has great plans for us in the days ahead. I believe our charge to lead God’s people in His church will be most effectively communicated in 

both teaching and living out the example He has set before us in passages like Acts 2:41‐47:  

     So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.      And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. 

 This is certainly a responsibility for us as pastoral leadership…and (yes, we all knew this was coming) this is definitely all our responsibility as Christians connected by the work of Christ in saving us and drawing us into this fellowship of Christ‐followers, Claycomo Baptist Church. For me, living this life together and helping lead all of us to continued and growing faithfulness in a strengthening biblical community is much more than a responsibility. This calling on our lives is a wonderful privilege and opportunity to bring glory to our Lord.  I urge all of us to focus in this way, that we grow in our understanding of this significant biblical teaching. Drawing encouragement from the truth which we see ourselves already living, and adjust‐ing ourselves through the correction of Scripture to more complete faithfulness in sync with God’s plan for us all.

Perfect victory Perfect victory  Many people enjoy making basketball picks in March, though their brackets are soon “busted.” Se‐

lecting every correct victor throughout the NCAA tournament would be quite a feat. Ac‐cording to Mental Floss magazine, if you flipped a coin for each game, the odds of achieving a perfect bracket would be one in 9.2 quintillion! By comparison, your odds of becoming president are one in 10 million, and your odds of bowling a perfect game are one in 11,500.   

For odds that are less of a long shot, consider this: Your chance of living an imperfect life is one in one. Sin is the ultimate bracket‐buster, and you’d be hopelessly lost without a Savior. “But thanks be to God, who gives [you] the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).  

I pray that we, the Claycomo Baptist Church, will be known as the kind of biblical community that embodies what Jesus said of His people in Mark 10:29‐30:   

     Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or broth‐ers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hun‐dredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

Entering glory ~ Entering glory ~ Entering glory ~ Martyn Lloyd‐Jones, who served as pastor of London’s Westminster Chapel for almost 30 years, couldn’t speak at the end of his life. Days before dying, he wrote, “Do not pray for my healing. Do not hold me back from the glory.”   The Apostle Paul was torn between staying on earth and going to heaven: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. … I am hard pressed between the two” (Philippians 1:21, 23).   Neither of these men feared death; nor should any Christian. As Haddon Robinson said, “For those who trust Jesus Christ, death is not a sheriff dragging us off to court but a servant ushering us into the presence of a loving Lord.”
