Classification of Primary Sources ICreating the Sigla

Matteo V. d´Alfonso, Barbara K. Saile

The first requirement for a body of documents to be accessed is to classify it

NEEDS:1. to identify unambigously our objects of study2. to be able to refer to them in editions, commentaries, articles

Classification is the creation of a system of one to one indicators (signatures, page

numbers etc). Its result is a catalogue

to the subject•Still Life (SL), •Portraits (P),•Town Landscapes (TL), •Bucolic Landscapes (BL), •Various (V)

He orders them according:

to the year: 1955-1978

to a progressive number in the year.

Paintings named like follows:

•Still life with fish, 1968•Harvest, 1967•The new Ternopil, 1973•Tatjana, 1972 •Intern of a Bar, 1975

Will get sigla like these:

SL-1968,17BL-1967,4TL-1973,21P-1972,5V-1975,2

In the world of the paper, archivists and librarians name folders, number manuscripts folios, gives signatures to books, stick labels on volumes etc.

Responsible for transposing this intellectual and practical operation into

the web are WE (with the help of Hyper)

WHO does the classification ?

We can either create a new classification

or adapt an old one.

that can co-define stable web addresses

URLs

Which is our GOAL ?

We have to establish and publish a system of unique identifiers

SIGLA

1. Choose one corpusaccording to your interests

2. Choose the level of granularity useful for you

•URLs

•Navigation Icon

•Contextuali-zation Pages3. Establish your classification

(new or imported)

4. Classify your corpusdown to the chosen level of granularity

5. Publish all the sigla

Hyper creates the URLs and the navigations tools through them

You establish the sigla and publish

them with the Help of a Web application in Hyper Environment:

FABRICA

Why is it called Fabrica?

The word Fabrica comes from the Latin word “faber” (blacksmith),

back then a fabrica was a blacksmith’s workshop

different meaning in the Renaissance: e.g. “Fabrica del duomo di Milano”,

a studio of artisans working together

Multi-user web application

NOTa desktop application

you just need I-net and a browser

We recommend to use Firefoxwww.firefox.com

freevery fast

less security problems

What can we do with Fabrica

Each Hyper has its own Fabrica

for creating scholarly editions and

publishing them on the web.

Fabrica is the Working Environment in Hyper

Advantages of Fabrica

It allows simultaneous, delocalized working

You only need an I-net connection and a browser

It allows continuous modifications of your work

before it is published in Hyper

Once published in Hyper „rien ne va plus“!
