Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

10 -11 December 2014

Regional seminar on time-use surveys

CLASSIFICATION ACTIVITIES FOR

TIME-USE STATISTICS

•A tool to plan, carry out, process and disseminate statistics and

indicators on time use for its analysis, and public policies and

programs with a gender perspective.

•Hierarchical classification of all activities that the general

population may spend time on during the 24 hours of a day.

•Its main purpose is to provide a set of activity categories that

can be utilized in producing meaningful statistics on time use.

•Help obtain consistent statistics, which are comparable across

countries.

International: ICATUS

Regional: CAUTAL

CLASSIFICATION ACTIVITIES FOR

TIME-USE STATISTICS

Time use classifications should

•Be detailed enough to identify separately activities

mainly undertaken by women or by men.

•Allow the distinction between market work, non-

market work, domestic activities and volunteer work

and enable the provision of data that can be linked to

official statistics emanating from the SNA and labour

statistics frameworks.

ICATUS

International Classification of Activities for Time-Use

Statistics

•Uses SNA as a basic framework

•Distinguishes between:

– productive activities within SNA

– productive activities outside SNA

– personal activities. •Is under revision

– issued as a “trial”

– reflect comments received

– update terminology
