Imagine dance without music. Impossible. Tchaikovsky’s lush ballet scores and Bernstein’s wonderfully energetic West Side Story remind us all that it is the music that drives the dance. And forever the two art forms are entwined. Relish the final Classics Unwrapped for the year: you’ll be dancing in your seat!
Night-time. Those magical hours when the moon and stars come out and imagination takes flight. Many composers have contemplated this time of day to create works that evoke a gamut of emotions and transport us to dream-like states. Join your ASO and hear these works anew.

Richard WAGNER (1813–1883)Die Walküre: Magic Fire Music
The fascination of fire! Who can resist it? De Falla draws us in with some trills (we’ll be hearing lots of those tonight), conjuring up the flickering flames of a Romani campfire somewhere in Andalusia. Then the Ritual Fire Dance begins: a lone figure whirling in the eerie light. Watch out! The ghost of her unfaithful husband appears – she is trying to lure his unquiet spirit into the blaze.
Fire moves quickly, and so when Haydn was required to provide appropriate music to prelude a play called ‘The Conflagration’ in the 1770s, he turned to a symphony he’d written some years earlier, whose first movement (Presto)
is unusually fast. Those dramatic silences make it sound somewhat dangerous too! ‘The Fire Symphony’ proved a catchier title than ‘No.59’ for the piece thereafter.
In 1749, King George II held a public celebration in London’s Green Park to mark the end of a war. Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, written especially for outdoor performance with lots of trumpets and drums, struck just the right tone of dignified rejoicing. But the crowning glory was to be a spectacular fireworks display, and that had not been planned so well…
The result was about as chaotic as ‘The Infernal Dance’ of Stravinsky’s first ballet – Handel could have done with some of those trombone glissandos and pounding syncopations! In this Russian fairy-tale, The Firebird appears, bewitching everyone into a frenzied dance, until they suddenly collapse in an enchanted sleep (‘Berceuse’), before a solo horn introduces the bright light of the ‘Finale’ and darkness is overcome.
What instrument does ‘fire’ best? Violas-as-firewood jokes aside, it’s probably the trumpet – capable of a bright, loud, almost burning quality of sound, especially when played in the style of the great Mexican virtuoso Rafael Mendez. We go to Hungary, known for its spicy paprika and fiery gypsy dances like Heijre Kati. La Virgen de la Macarena (the ‘Bullfighter’s Song’) take us out under the searing Spanish sun – without a hat!
What fire burns brighter than the sun? One of the most magical places in the world to watch it rise is on the edge of the Grand Canyon. And just when it finally peaks above the horizon and you think the show’s over, the whole canyon begins to be kindled in dazzling light. The opening movement of Ferde Grofé’s 1931 suite evokes this brilliantly.
The central movement of Vivaldi’s ‘Winter’ concerto from The Four Seasons has an unusual accompaniment for the solo violin, consisting of a fidgety bass line and pizzicato notes from the rest of the strings. This is all to create a cosy atmosphere – think the crackling of logs on a fire, and the tapping of rain at the window. It’s the contrast that makes the melody sound all the more comforting.
The fire that encircles Brünnhilde in the final scene of Wagner’s Die Walküre (the second of the four Ring Cycle operas) is both comforting and threatening. Wotan lights it as a protection for his daughter, now doomed to mortality. Only the very bravest man will dare to cross those magical flames. Who will it be? The heroic theme of Siegfried (heard in the low brass) gives the story away, while the dancing light of the fire (piccolo, harp, quivering violins) puts Brünnhilde into an enchanted sleep.
