Classic Bike Ramblings RIDING INTO HISTORY .......... Riding into history. It’s something all of us are doing everyday. It’s something that can't be stopped for it’s the progress of man to leave history behind. The space shuttles are one mission away from being part of our "his- tory". The men and women who "ride" them also part of it , and the spacecraft themselves in all their millions of miles of space travel will be regulated to "display only" for the future generations to marvel at what simple technology existed so long ago. For you see my dear friends I am a huge believer that historic machines must be preserved and shown and in as original condition as possible .They must be presented to the well knowledge and to the folks who just say "wow, that’s so cool!" Thought of in the late 60ties as the Apollo missions would wind down the first shuttle STS-1 "Columbia" would ride into history on April 12th. 1981. It would now be May 16th. 2011 while I drove up to the Full Throttle Office in Oldsmar to get the big double trailer for you see I was transporting 4 relics of motorcycling history to Saint Augustine in just a few days. Just before I left, the what should have been last shuttle flight, STS-134 "Endeavor" had lifted off into history. It seems there were others who were on a multi day mission of riding into his- tory besides myself. After the next shuttle flight STS-135 "Atlantis" all the remaining shuttles (4) will wind up where so many of our vintage bikes do, on display in museums. After 30 years of service to our nation on or around July 8th. 2011 "Atlantis" will become the last shuttle to ride into space and into the history books, she will then be deployed at the Kennedy Space Center, "Enterprise" (who never flew in space) will be at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York. "Endeavor" to the California Science Center in Los Angeles and "Discovery" will be at the Smithsonian. And you know my friends I think on my way to the 13th. Riding into History next year I will go by and visit the old spacecraft, seems only fitting that it should sit only 90 miles from St. Augustine for history must be visited whenever possible. These warriors of space will never again get to do what they had been built for, becom- ing static educational units for an interested public. For you see my readers I was on my own mission one I had been on in 2009 but was too overwhelmed to see the details, much like a persons first space flight. Its truly the second trip you enjoy, you no- tice things. You’re a little more relaxed and you have an idea of what to expect. Over the next couple days I would be loading my 1946 Moto Guzzi, my 1973 Condor a 1966 Gilera and the bike I would truly "Ride into History" on Fridays vintage ride, my 1974 Moto Guzzi Eldo- rado LAPD for I was going to the 12th. Annual Riding into History Concours d' Elegance Motorcycle Show. 400 vintage bikes from around the world congregate every third Saturday of May. This is an invite only, no entry fee, gathering of the greatest antique and clas- sic bikes ever assembled and it is held outside the oldest city in America at an amazing venue called The World of Golf Village. Featuring a 1 mile in Circumfer- ence Lake where this incredible collection of motorbikes will be displayed to thousands and thousands of people all paying a ten dollar entry fee to see. With all the money donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. This truly amazing gathering of the best rides of history was started by Billy Aldrich who organized this after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Deciding he wanted to make a difference in this fight he would raise money using this event for breast cancer research and early detection. His wife is fine and with another sponsor picking up that char- ity Riding into History turned to raising funds for another truly worthy cause the Wounded Warriors Project. This is a non profit organization whose mission is to "Honor and empower wounded warriors" of the U.S. Armed Forces. It provides services and goods to get returning wounded veterans going again and to re-enter the civilian way of life after being injured in service to our great nation. Bill Rob- inson, Larry Meeker and John Duss have been an invalu- able asset to the suc- cess of this event with $25,000 dol- lar checks this year and last given to a great cause, well done my friends. I had missed this vintage ride on Friday the last time I was here, and since I was bringing my two military singles up for the show I thought either would be great for my "Ride into History" after all it stated on the sign-up sheet, "A leisurely ride to lunch in St. Augustine". But about a month before I received an e-mail from Riding into Histo- ry that made me re-think this approach when I saw it would be a 60 mile or so ride and a speed of 60ish. Mph should be maintained! This would be the upper limits of my old Fran Haasch & Mr. 500
