    ALEXANDER GRAHAM

    BELL

    Bell was born in 1847.He loved hisfather. As a pupil he helped deafpeople learn to talk.Bell immigrated to Ontario in 1870.

    In March 1876 Bell sent the first message over a telephone toThomas A. Watson who helped him in his workshop. In 1877 heset up the Bell Telephone Company. By 1878 Bell had alreadyset up the first telephone exchange and by 1884 long distanceconnections were being made between Boston, Massachusettsand New York.In 1888 he founded the National Geographic Society.Bell died at his home in Nova Scotia, Canada, in August 2,1922.Bell is an important person worldwide because he invented thetelephone.

    VINCENT VAN GOGH

    Vincent van Gogh was a painter.He was born in 1853. Van Goghwas very poor because he sold onlyone painting during his life. Whenhe was alive he gave his food topoor people. When he was a childhe had a mental illness. His brother

    helped him get well .In 1880 when he was 27 years oldhe decided to become an artist. In 1886 he went to Parisand met other Impressionist painters. When he went toParis he created over 800 paintings and 2,000 drawings.In 1888 he left Paris and spent the last two years of hislife in Southern France. Van Gogh died in 1890. He wasa famous painter and he influenced other painters too.

    One of his paintings was sold for over 800 milliondollars.

    THOMAS A. EDISON

    Thomas A. Edison was born in 1847. He was amysterious child. He went to school for three months inhis whole lifeWhen he was 16 he worked in a telegraph office.After that he went to New York with 1$ in his pocket.He fixed and improved some equipment in a companythere and the company paid him $ 40,000. Later he made

    the first light bulb.After he had made the light bulb, he worked to make apower system. Thomas Edison died in 1931.

    ALBERT EINSTEIN

    In 1879 Albert Einstein was born inGermany where he lived. Albert was

    known for forgetting dates and numbers,

    losing things and had a lot of problemswith the English language. When he was

    10 years old his father gave him a

    compass which aroused his interest inscience. His first research was written

    when he was 16 years old. In 1895 he

    wrote his first scientific paper and in 1905 he discovered thetheory of relativity .Later he wrote around 300 scientific papers.

    He won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921.In 1946 Einstein

    accepted an honorary degree from Lincoln University inPennsylvania. In 1952, Albert Einstein died.

    VERNE

    Jules Verne was born on

    February 8, 1828.When he was young his father

    insisted on him studying the Law but he preferred

    writing. When his father realized that, he stopped

    supporting him financially. He was forced to make

    money from writing so he started by writing plays

    and the words for operas. Today hes known for his

    novels.

    In 1865 Jules Verne wrote the novel Alice in

    Wonderland which takes a place in a fantasy world.

    In one of his other novels, the character PhileasFog

    travels around the world in a balloon just to win a bet.In his novels he predicted things happening in the

    future. For example, his submarine, Nautilus, in his

    novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

    predicted the first power submarine that was made 25

    years later.

    In 1888 he was elected councilor in Amiens.

    Jules Verne had a great imagination. Some of Vernesscientific ideas are now outdated but his view of

    science in that age is of great value to the modern

    reader. Jules Verne is a very famous writer because

    he wrote lots of books which are amazing. Many of

    his novels became films and he became very rich. He

    died in 1905.

    WOLFANG AMADEUS MOZART

    Mozart was born in Leopold in 1756.At the age of four

    Mozart became an expert in keyboard playing. By the

    age of five he was composing short pieces which his

    father wrote down for him. At the age of eight Mozart

    published his first two sonatas for the harpsichord. By

    the age of twenty-five Mozart had become the best

    keyboard player in Vienna.

    WALT DISNEY

    In December 5, 1901, Walt Disney was

    born .He was one of five children, four boysand one girl.

    In 1918, Walt Disney tried to join the military

    service.

    On July 13, 1925, Walt married his employee

    Lillian Bounds .In 1932 Walts production flowers and

    trees won the Academy Award. In 1937, he released

    The Old Mill and the Snowhite and the seven Dwarfs.In 1955, the Disneyland Park opened.

    In 1954 Disney began the television production.

    When he was younger he often sold drawings to

    neighbors to make extra money. Later in his life, he

    joined the Red Cross and went to France, where he spent

    a year driving an ambulance and the car of a Red Cross

    official.Walt Disney is important because he succeeded in

    promoting the American ideals through his films.
