Welcome.

On behalf of the Portland Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame Association’s Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 31st PIL Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. We are here to recognize the outstanding achievements of past PIL Athletes, Coaches and Administrators, as well as to help perpetuate the storied history and tradition of this great league.

The mission of the Portland Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame Association is to recognize the accomplishments of great Ath-letes, Coaches and Administrators of the past, as well as to hon-or the achievements of current Athletes, Coaches and Adminis-trators. In so doing, the PIL Hall of Fame has become a visible support group for the Portland Interscholastic League.

During the past year, the Association, which consists of a 32-member Board of Directors, has sponsored the PIL Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, the PIL Hall of Fame Mel Krause Memorial Golf Tournament in September at Broadmoor Golf Course, and the “Celebration of Champions” Awards Ceremony in May at the Tiger Woods Center at Nike’s World Headquarters. The Association also has secured a sponsorship from The Harold and Margaret Taylor Foundation. Funds received from this sponsor, along with donations and monies from fundraising events, are used to provide financial support for the athletic programs in the 9 PIL High Schools.

The PIL Hall of Fame will continue to reach out for additional sponsorships, enhance its Golf Tournament and solicit the support of more former PIL Athletes as it strives to assist the 6,000-plus Student-Athletes in the Portland Interscholastic League.

Congratulations to the Induction Class of 2018 and thank you to all of those in attendance for making this special event one that we will all remember.

ROY LOVE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

14 2018 PIL Hall of Fame Induction Banquet

Kevin Flink

Career Highlights Kevin Flink’s roots in the PIL run deep and long. Flink got his “feet wet” in sports broadcasting as a student at Wilson High School and a “voice” on Radio KBPS on the Benson campus from 1968 until his Wilson graduation in 1971. He earned his BA in Communications at Washington State University in 1975 and returned to Benson to teach Radio Broadcasting for 32 years and serve as KBPS Operations Manager since 2012. In addition to broadcasting, he’s been a public address announcer at Wilson, Benson, Grant, PIL District events, OSAA State events, Portland State University, Pacific University, and professionally for the Portland Beavers, Timbers, and Thorns.

In reflection, Flink offers the following advice to students:

• Always be prepared for your assignment; • If you don’t know the answer, ask; • You have to work hard to give 100%; • Stay humble.

The best advice he’s received came from former PIL Ath-letic Director Ron Pheister: “No one ever bought a ticket to hear a public address announcer.”

Richard (Dick) Hennessy

Education Dick Hennessy’s blood line in the PIL is traced through Benson Polytechnic, where he earned 3 letters each in Football and Track & Field. He was a starting lineman at the first ever Shrine All-Star Game and made the first tackle in that first game. He played a year each on the OSU Rook team and at Grays Harbor JC and finished as a two-way lineman at Lewis & Clark College.

Teaching / Coaching Career In the classroom he was a History/Social Studies teacher. As a Coach he assisted in Football, Wrestling, and Track, first at Sweet Home High School for 2 years and Grant for 7. Highlights in a 21-year career at Benson included Head Football Coach from 1965-70 and Athletic Director from 1971-75, while assisting in Wrestling and Track. His legacy at Benson includes The Dick Hennessy Award going to the Outstanding Senior Athlete.

In reflecting, Dick says, “Success in life requires honesty and integrity to be passed on to the next generation.” He more than did his part as an esteemed Teacher and Coach at Benson Tech.

This award is in honor of long-time President of the PIL Hall of Fame, Roy Love. The Executive Committee voted in 2017 to name the previously named Merit Award the Roy Love Distinguished Service Award.

Love served tirelessly for 11 of the 30 years of Inductions, serving as President from 2004-14. He was a star Baseball pitcher at both Cleveland High School and Portland State University. He won 5 conference titles as PSU’s Baseball Coach from 1962-74 and served as Athletic Director for the Vikings from 1971-86. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at Cleveland, the PIL, PSU and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
