2 Wedderburn Community News

We have had great feedback on our first edition

of Scoop and Scuttlebutt, which by the way was a

name thought up by young Oscar van Veen, son

of editor Marg van Veen. Scoop being obvious,

Scuttlebutt another word for gossip!

Marg has been working very hard on getting the

community involved and the response has been

overwhelming. Well done also to all our volun-

teers who fold and stick the 800 copies ready for

posting, this is a huge job but well worth the

effort.

The Community House has been fortunate to se-

cure more funding from the Department of Social

Services until the end of the year. This enables

us to fund events or activities that involve com-

munity participation by all members of the com-

munity ensuring connectedness and helping to

prevent social isolation. If your club or organisa-

tion is thinking of running such an event come

and see us to see if you are eligible for some of

this very valuable funding.

We have been running some great activities at

the House lately with a Pruning Workshop teach-

ing us the correct cutting methods for tackling our

fruit trees/roses and getting them ready for

spring . Next there will be a Composting Work-

shop at the end of this month. More information

is in this edition of the newsletter.

Don’t miss the opportunity to attend these inter-

esting and productive workshops that are benefi-

cial not only to yourself but also your garden.

sented teams in under 9’s, under 11’s, under 13’s and under 15’s.

Pruning Workshop Has Us Prepared.

Wedderburn Community House’s Community Garden was a hive of activity Sunday afternoon as

people gathered around the fruit trees learning the art of pruning. Arborist Peter Goegan shared

his knowledge with a cheery group of gardeners, who were all desperate by the end of the talk to

race home and attack their own trees.

Peter started with a slide presentation explaining . Then he lead the group out to the garden to put

theory into practise. To us novices the trees looked fine, but Peter soon explained the importance

of keeping the centre clear, negating competition for energy and the need to take out

co-dependent growth. By the end the trees received quite a haircut, but Peter ensures us that the

trees and the fruit they provide will be much better in the long run.

This workshop was a wonderful opportunity for local gardeners to learn hands on, from a

professional. Our community is very fortunate to have people with specialist skills willing to share

their knowledge and to have FaHCSIA’s support through grants.

On the last Sunday of next month we hope to run a workshop on composting, with the opportunity

of purchasing high quality compost on the day. Check our notice board out front of Burges IGA for

further information.

In the Spotlight: WEDDERBURN CARE GROUP.

Every Tuesday morning at 10am a dedicated group of ladies meet in a room behind the Trotting Pavilion, to produce Care

Packs for those suffering serious illnesses. The packs consist of an emergency information booklet, pillow, laundry bag, laven-

der bag, pen/pad, heat pack, bookmark, seat belt pad and depending on the season, a hat and scarf, or toy for a child. Each

pack is designed according to the individual.

Last year the group gave away 80 Care Packs to individuals in need, 60 hats and turbines to the Oncology department at Ben-

digo Base Hospital. Another 60 syringe bag and urine bag covers were made for people at the Bendigo Base Hospice, to pro-

vide a little discretion when family visit..

In recent time the ladies have also started making blankets and hats for special requests. Wedderburn Health Clinic, IDHS staff,

or home help generally inform them of people in need. But

their work has not just been for local people, with care bags

sent to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and to country towns as

far away as Barham.

The core group that meet on Tuesdays includes about 10

women, but there are another 20 working behind the scenes,

knitting and sewing.

Just as I was about to leave local lady, Sue-Ann arrived with

storage boxes and wool a plenty to donate to the group. It is

only through the support of such people that the group can

keep going. Seeing and learning about the work of these

ladies and the important role they play in our community, they

should definitely be in the spotlight. If anyone is interested in

helping out, drop by on a Tuesday, or ring Denise Caulfield on

54943350 .

Denise, Barb, Denise, Alison and Lil with one of their blankets.

Wedderburn CERT In Safe Hands With New Recruits. Wedderburn Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has been in operation since 25th April 2005, supporting local

ambulance services. CERT members can be called to anything. They attend different emergencies such as cardiac arrests, car

accidents along with general emergencies just to name a few. CERT provides pain relief, oxygen therapy, wound care, CPR -

whatever is needed until the ambulance arrives.

CERT members are on-call on a 24/7 roster with 2 people rostered on for 12 hour shifts. Rain, hail or shine, CERT is always

ready for any emergency. This means they need very understanding family and friends to provide this service to our community

members.

The CERT member numbers had declined over the last 12 months to

7 members. In February this year another 7 members commenced

their training. The 12 days of training (on weekends) was completed

at the end of May and they have been on-call through June & July.

The new recruits are Janice McEwen, Bruce Hargreaves, Georgina &

Kevin Cahill, Dede-Jo & Greg Williams, Sue-Anne Hackett. Jodi Mun-

ro-Foord (Wycheproof) & Nalita Curry (Charlton) also did their ACO

training with the CERT members.

On Wednesday 16th July we had a combined Volunteer Thank you

Dinner & Graduation Night to welcome the new members and present

them with their Authority to Practice certificates. This night was

attended by around 45 people.

Wedderburn Battles At Kerang Junior Hockey Carnival.

It was a chilly start to the day for 6 teams repre-

senting Wedderburn in the annual hockey

carnival. Our coaches gathered their teams and

prepared them for the upcoming battles. This

year all the teams were mixed.

The Under 9’s coached by Steve & Kim Giorlando

were highly entertaining and played with all their

heart squealing & leaping when they scored or

dragging their sticks when they didn’t.

The Under 11’s coached by Michelle Hargreaves

worked hard all day and still came up with smiles

at the end of the day. Wedderburn had two teams

in both Under 13 and Under 15 sections coached

by Monique Vella, Richard Stephenson, Melinda Springthorpe and Uncle John Tonkin. The

games played against each other were the most enjoyable for both the players and the sup-

porters with lots of wise cracks and barracking for both sides. The winners of these games

have achieved bragging rights for

who knows how long.

At the end of the day

Under 9 - 1st Kerang, 2nd Boort, 3rd

Men’s Shed Open Day Report by Ric Raftis.

The Wedderburn Men’s Shed held their Open Day on Sunday the 20th July. Shedders took to the

benches and floors during the week to clean everything up and the Shed was so clean it almost

didn’t look like a Shed.

People started arriving as early as 10.30 am to go

through the place and have a look at the equipment

available for people to use as members. Geoff turned

the wood lathe on and gave a brief demonstration of

wood turning. He has also taken the trouble to put a

number of bowls, platters and other turned objects

on display for the visitors to admire.

Many people took the opportunity to participate in a

guided tour of the Shed. Many were amazed at the

wide range of quality tools and equipment available

including our newly acquired compound mitre saw

and bench. The metal shop proved particularly

popular with many envious looks at our fantastic MIG

welder that has been very busy of late making steel ladders.

Several members cooked a superb BBQ lunch for the

visitors. Lunch was free as a result of the support of

FACHSIA. We were very appreciative of their support

for our community event. The visitors were quite

impressed with the members cooking skills and

enjoyed some great tucker and drinks.

Wedderburn Hardware generously donated a 45cc

chainsaw to the Shed for use as a door prize. You had to

be on site to win it at the drawing at 1pm. Shed mem-

ber, Chris Maher won the saw, but donated it back for a

further drawing. Dave Thomas was the lucky person

who is now offering to do pruning around the town we

hear!

The Shed has also been conducting a wood raffle that

was drawn on the day. Bob Paselick was the lucky win-

ner but donated it back to the Shed to be auctioned. David Lockhart beat other bidders into the

ground with his generous bids.

The Men’s Shed would like to thank all the members who put in to make the day a huge success.

We would also like to acknowledge FaCHSIA’s generous support of our day. We were quite

amazed at the number of people who turned up but at the same time very pleased with the

opportunity to show our Shed off to the community. After all, it is a community asset. Hopefully

some of the people who came to look at our facility will come back and join as members so they

can participate in the projects we have on the go.

If you would like to see some photos of the day, go to the Men’s Shed Facebook page at

www.facebook.com/wedderburnmensshed.

Lowe family admire some of the Men’s Sheds wood

Wedderburn Hockey at the Junior State Championships.

After months of training sessions all over Victoria, with families travelling from Mildura to Bendigo, seven local hockey players made the final cut to represent North Central Lightning at the Junior State Championships in Melbourne, the first week of the school holidays.

The championships held at venues across Melbourne, included 10 teams from across the state, 4 country and 6 metro.

The pace of the games was extraordinary as the ball moves very quickly on the synthetic pitch. Being used to playing on real grass, the Lightning players fought gallantly, but were unable to bring a trophy home this time.

Rochelle Vella played in under 13’s, Monique Vella in under 17’s girls, Corey and Hayden Youngson in under 17 boys, and Zoe Coombes, Laura van der Weter-ing and Kirsty Tonkin played in the under 15 girls team.

While in Melbourne the teams try to make the most of it. The under 17 teams were lucky enough to play their games in the evening allowing the team members to enjoy the many tourist attractions of Melbourne during the days.

POO 2 PLATE GADENING TIPS.

It’s your very last chance to put bare rooted trees in! Race down to the nursery now, and grab some fruit trees,

including apples, pears, plums, peaches, and nectarines. Deciduous exotic trees can be planted in now also.

If planning on putting in some tomatoes next month, prepare a bed now (your toms will thank you for it). Do this by

popping in some organic compost, pelletised chook poo, a wee bit of water, and applying a straw mulch. This bed will

be awesome come September… and you will have the greatest tomatoes in the street!

Pruning and weeding is a top job to do at this time of year. Deciduous fruit trees love a big old haircut now, except

your apricot! Green manure crops (like clover, barley, wheat or field peas) are good to go now… improve that

dormant veggie patch!

It’s time to get planting! There is some great plants you can put in now, once the frosts have gone. Try beetroot,

lettuce, parsnip, peas, radish, celery (in a milk carton), leek, lettuce, onions, seed potatoes, rocket, silverbeet, and

spinach.

Before you start planting you may want to top up your garden beds with some compost and mulch. So as part of the

Community House’s Spring Garden Program we are running a workshop on ;

Making good quality compost heaps. Sunday 24th August at 2pm.

There will be high grade compost available to buy on the day.

GUESS WHO?

Flynn Noah Lock, son of Aaron and Jodie was named after Flynn of the Flying Doctors Service.

He is 7 years old and in Grade 2 at St. Mary’s in Inglewood.

Flynn has just returned from a trip to Uluru and the Olgas. While there he visited a nature park where he saw Thorny

Devils, Bilbys, Sticky Nest rats and bats in a cave. Flynn was very detailed in his story about the Mala, also known as the

Rufus Hair Wallaby, as he informs me.

The Mala was almost extinct until this park started a breeding and reintroduction program. Now there are over 250 Malas

slowly being reintroduced to the wild.

On his adventure some days Flynn had to walk 18kms. By the end he felt crook, but it was all worth it when they went out for

tea and even got sweets.

Sometimes on the holiday Flynn was having so much fun that he spat food or drink across the cabin because he was

laughing so hard.

Back at home Flynn plays for the Redbacks hockey team and does Oz kick, but his favourite sport is tennis.

When Flynn grows up he wants to be a farmer like Dad.

Innovative Women’s Scholarship Program Now Open

Women serving on the boards of not-for-profit community organisations across Victoria should consider applying for

a Victorian Government sponsored scholarship to boost their skills.

Nationals Member for Swan Hill, Peter Walsh, said that applications were now open for the Victorian Women’s Gov-ernance Scholarship Program, that strengthens the governance of not-for-profit boards by funding opportunities for women to expand their board skills. “The scholarship program is being run in partnership with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and

offers eligible women the chance to undertake the Company Directors Course,” Mr Walsh said.

“The Government recognises the importance of encouraging more women to take on board leadership roles in met-

ropolitan, rural and regional Victoria.

“Since the scholarship program started in 2012, more than 100 women of diverse backgrounds have undertaken the course, boosting their board skills and enhancing opportunities for networking with other emerging, women

leaders.”

vicwomenscholarship.

The women had 8 players set off on another grey day a good day to play Par. There were no plus scores and Ruth Hall

with 1 down was the winner.

Nancy and Jill began well in the first nine holes at St Arnaud for the Champion of Champions Day. Nancy had 51 and Jill had 46. Di Johnson and Mandy Male were 44 and 45, pretty high scores for A grade. Mandy ended up winning with an 85 and Di came runner up with 89. Wendy Laffin had 93 and Marilyn Knights playing her 14th Champion of Champions day

also had a 93. Sharyn Erwin from St Arnaud was the B grade Champion.

The men had a small field one Saturday with 9 players setting off for a Multiple Stable ford game. There was a round ta-ble communal multiplication of scores when everyone had finished amid much laughter when someone scored a four and their partner a zero. The winners were John Donaldson and Liam McNeill with 68. Michael Steel and Simon Shanks were runners up with 62 points. We had two extra players playing a solid social game but Hans would not reveal their scores.

They came back the next week though and joined the field.

Much more golf has happened while my internet was down with 4 women playing at Boort on Thursday with low scores from our team and a soaking in the storm. Six men played at Boort last Saturday and nine at home, with John Chandler

winning at home with 85 18 67. Richard Dougall was runner up.

Huge working bees have been happening and our course is really ready for our tournament this week. Thanks to all members involved. Congratulations to Glenda and Keith Bird on the birth of Mila Rose to Chelsea and Will in Swan Hill.

Their first granddaughter.

WEDDERBURN VS BIRCHIP 26 JULY

MINKEY A great game against strong opposition. With plenty of players Wedderburn could interchange frequently but th is didn’t help with the teams scoring ability. I can see a great improvement with the extra hockey the juniors have been playing. Birchip Watchem were the winners 3-0 loss to us. Post office award- Nathan Williams, chocolate award Shelby Giorlando Wedderburn 0 – Birchip 3 UNDER 13

Wedderburn knew the importance of being first to the ball and worked hard to maintain control of the game. We have started to explore new position and Ethan Isaac made the most of his opportunities on the wing and scored a few goals. Rex Stephenson worked hard through the middle with Oscar Van Veen and were rewarded with goals. In the second half, we lost our way at times and found it difficult to make good decisions but it was pleasing to see we worked through these moments and got the ball forward. Our half backs stopped the ball well and Ingrid Gould directed the ball well to the inners and forwards. Braydon Springthorpe played the wing position well and

scored a great goal of the goalie's pads.

Final Score: Wedderburn 5-0 Footy Ladies: Rex Stephenson Chocolate: Ingrid, Ethan and Oscar

UNDERAGE

Birchip scored within the first few minutes and got Wedderburn on the back foot. Wedderburn were lacking a few players but once they ar-rived the game lifted to another level. Matt Lockhart scored 3 goals for the game and showed great determination and lifted the work rate of the team. Braydon Springthorpe and Monique Vella worked well to-gether on the back line and often stopped Birchip's forward plays. Laura Van de Wetering and Rhordan Holt consistent efforts were ad-mirable and provided opportunities for the forwards. Chris Giorlando the goalie made some great saves in the second half and put his body on the line. Final Score Wedderburn 5-2 Fish Shop: Monique and

Braydon Chocolates: Chris and Rhordan

WOMEN’S

The Wedderburn women’s team are on fire after the taste of success against Donald the other week. The team is combining skills and teamwork more effectively and moving the ball with confidence. The scoring just kept coming which is fantastic for Wedderburn who usually don’t score many goals for the season. Final score- win. Glass went to

Emily Van de Wetering for her tireless game. Chocolate went to Tarah Youngson who is showing leadership and Laura Van de Wetering for her defensive skills. Well done Kylie Turnbull who scored a few of the goals. Hopefully the team can continue to succeed with the

end of the season in sight and make the finals.

Football.

Over the last few weeks Wedderburn has played Charlton, Donald and Boort, with Birchip-Watchem being our opponents this coming

weekend.

The A grade are undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder with only 4 games left to play they can’t fall any lower than second so will get

the double chance and play in the second semi final.

The B Grade have one of the closest ladders in the competition, currently Wedderburn are sitting second but are on the same points as

Donald and are only one game ahead of Charlton, the final four teams are set with Birchip-Watchem rounding out the four, but the final

standings for the top three positions could all come down to the last game of the season.

C Grade is also sitting on top of their ladder, with just one loss so far against Charlton just a couple of weeks ago. They are two games

clear of second position and should be a good chance to also play in the second semi final come finals time.

Our two 16 & Under teams are both very competitive in their respective competitions, both teams are currently third on their ladders with

the A team unable to fall any lower but have the chance to grab one of the top two spots if they win all their games and the B team unable

to fall out of the top four but could also grab the double chance come finals if they finish off the season well.

The youngest members of the club the 13 & Unders are also having a

brilliant season and are sitting top of the ladder. They have experi-

enced one loss this season, right back at the first game but have im-

proved every week since then to make them the ladder leaders.

On Sunday 20th July, the North Central football netball and hockey

associations ran the annual lightning premiership. This is for children in

the 12 & Under age group. Wedderburn Netball Club sent a team of

seven players to play in the round robin tournament. Throughout the

day we were able to play all the other towns and win all our games

which put us straight through to the grand final against Donald. Donald

was much bigger than us but our tenacity and good ball skills saw us

have a well deserved win 9 goals to 4. The girls were very excited as it

was their very first experience to play in a grand final and therefore first

ever grand final win!

Seniors

The Redbacks were expecting a tough close tussle against the Bulls and that is what they had for two and a half quarters but then began to find the goals more easily and with three winning forwards in Herdman, Barnes and Prime drew away for a very convincing win. Final Scores Wedderburn 24-20-164 Birchip-Watchem 9-4-58. Wedderburn Goals: Brady Herdman 6 Sam Barnes Paul Prime 5 Robbie Tonkin

3 Liam McCarthy 2 Ben De Aurago Will Chalmers and Andrew Chalkley 1.

Wedderburn Best: Brad Herdman Daniel Gash Rohan McHugh Cam Perry Jake Hayes Liam .McCarthy and Robbie Tonkin.

Reserves

After a very close encounter in their early season contest the Redbacks expected another dose of the same at Donaldson Park in the

return bout against the Bulls.

A spirited first term gave indication that this would be he case but after quarter time despite the Bulls being able to move the ball freely

from defence to attack the Redbacks were able to restrict the Bulls scoring. The majority of play was in Redback control but severe

inaccuracy in front of goal detracted somewhat from an otherwise decisive performance.

Alex Gordon-Cooke in the ruck set an early tone for the Redbacks by giving Clinton Turnbull, Jack McNamarra and Liam Ritchie first

crack at early possessions as each of them were to have a turn at sending the Redbacks deep into attack. Cam Taylor took advantage of

supply and finished with five goals from a forward pocket while Sam Johnston at full forward was also important.

Andrew Brett at centre half back marked well all day and cut

off a supply to the Bulls forwards. Shaun Polkinghorne, Cam

Steel, Mick Waldron and Will Tonkin mopped up what Brett

did not stop. Ryan Butters and Brad Holt on the wings collect-

ed their share of the Ball while Ash Younghusband and Cam

Lang also featured in passages of effective play either play-

ing forward or on the ball. Shane Herdman was another to

continue his good form of recent weeks with strong use of

body in close tight contests.

The Redbacks need to continue this type of form in the com-

ing weeks.

Under 16s

The Redbacks started this game strongly with a five goal first term which set the scene for the day and were able to continue in this

vein for the remainder of the game.

A dominant forward in Tom Campbell who finished with six goals gave the forward line real substance and he received good supply

from Joe Lockhart, Rhordan Holt and Matt Lockhart.

Tim Isaac continues to produce the goods in each game as he progresses along well after a lengthy lay off due to an early season

injury. Mitch Stephenson continues to use his height to good advantage in ruck contests giving the Holt brothers Louis and Oscar

opportunity to show their skills. Stephan Sedgley also featured in good movement of the ball into the forward line.

An overall solid team a performance by the Redbacks as they move into the closing rounds of the season.

Final Scores Wedderburn 14-9-93 Birchip-Watchem 2-1-13.

Under 13s

The Redbacks found the going tough against the strong and talented Bulls who sit clearly in second place on the ladder and moving

along well toward the finals. As they do each week the Redbacks gave their best and their efforts belied the story the scoreboard

showed. Despite the Birchip -Watchem dominance in key positions the Redbacks had plenty of contributors with Sam Lockhart and

Isaac Holt through the centre finding a lot of the ball. Heath Lock and Chris Giorlando find more of the football each week and use it to

advantage. Dillon Johnston is another youngster starting his football journey and is improving with every game, while Cain

Sedgley also gets in good position to find the footy and Finn Turnbull is another who is showing good skills in his as delivery

of the football. Max Ludwig was another who was prominent in a number of efforts in forcing the ball forward.

Final Scores Birchip-Watchem 10-18-78 Wedderburn 0-0-0.

Wedderburn Awards: Heath Lock Chris Giorlando Isaac Holt Sam Lockhart Dillon Johnston

Cain Sedgley Finn Turnbull.

Bulls best Brady Paley Will Sheahqn. Malachi Lowry.
