New Vocabulary related to funerals

Understanding and using new vocabulary

Have you ever been in a funeral/wedding/award/show/conference

Teaching Approach: The lesson is based on the Communicative approach organized through the PPP procedure

Materials and resources: Novel “Four weeding sans a funeral”, picture, class´s book , clay, pencils

Pedagogical use of ICT in class: Students will start working with the Cellphone application “Classroom” in order to start communicating us throughout that means

Seating arrangement: Students are seated in groups Cooperative work: Cooperative work is always challenging but I believe at

this stage students will be used to work in groups, additionally they already dispose of some vocabulary that makes easier to communicate each other.

Possible problems/ difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: I think it may be difficult for them to get use to a new teacher at this moment of the year. They also have to learn how to work with a new tool such as the Classroom app.

Potential problems students may have with the language: They might not understand the instructions in the target language and the new vocabulary.

ROUTINE (5’ minutes) Purpose: to set the mood for the lesson and to get ready to start to work. I will greet the students and I will ask them “how are you?” Next I will ask them about the date and I will write it on the board for them to copy it down.

Transition: Ok! Let´s start to work. Today we are going to talk about funerals.

WARM- UP (around 10 minutes): I will start telling the students about the last wedding I went and tell them very briefly about how it went. This wedding I went was a bit particular because it started as a Fortieth Birthday but ended as a wedding.

Transition: Well kids the novel you are reading is called “Four weddings and a funeral” as you are going to read chapter 5 we are going to focus on funerals.

PRESENTATION: (25 minutes): Interaction patterns: teacher- student Teaching strategy: Elicitation through pictures. Skills: Speaking

Funerals are sad events that occur all the time everywhere in this planet therefore I will give the students a picture of different funerals all around the world for them to get an idea of the differences in customs and traditions in diffe rent countries. T: Well I am going to give you some photos and in pairs you will take a few minutes to watch them and talk to your mate what you think the picture is about. Then you are going to share with the rest of the class your thoughts. Look at the pictures and think what the event might be, in what country or region. On the blackboard I will write some issues to take into account to help students to have a reflective though about the images they are working with.

Where the funeral is happening? Describe the image Can you add any information about the funeral you are working

with? After talking about the picture, students will be given more information and each group will share the information with the rest of the class. It is an oral activity: INDIA

When a Hindu is approaching death, a priest should be contacted and the priest and the

family should gather to be with the dying person. A small amount of water from the

Ganges River should be placed in the dying person’s mouth. If this is not possible before death, then these actions should take place immediately following the death. As soon as

death occurs, those gathered will avoid unnecessary touching of the body, as it is seen

as impure. Organ donation is acceptable for Indus, as there are no Hindu laws prohibiting organ or tissue donation. Embalming is acceptable in Hinduism.

Traditionally, all Hindus—except babies, children, and saints—are

cremated. Historically, Hindu cremations take place on the Ganges River in India.

CHINA

Hanging coffins are coffins which have been placed on cliffs. They can be found in

various locations, including China, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Hanging coffins are an ancient funeral custom of some ethnic groups, especially the Bo people of southern

China. Coffins of various shapes were mostly carved from one whole piece of wood. It

was said that the hanging coffins could prevent bodies from being taken by beasts and also bless the soul eternally.

ALASKA

The Eskimos' burial customs are quite unique and interesting. When a person dies, his body is placed on the ground so that the soul can find its path to the underworld.

However, if a person dies due to some disease or illness, the body is dismembered and then the separate parts are thrown in different places.

The Asiatic Eskimos burn their dead while the Eskimos from Greenland are known to

throw their dead into the seas. The rest of the Eskimos from Alaska bury their dead and then place a pile of stones on the grave.

5

EGYPT

The ancient Egyptians had an elaborate set of funerary practices that they believed

were necessary to ensure their immortality after death (the afterlife). These rituals and protocols included mummifying the body, casting magic spells, and burial with specific

grave goods thought to be needed in the Egyptian afterlife.

The ancient Egyptian burial process evolved over time as old customs were discarded and new ones adopted, but several important elements of the process persisted. Though

specific details changed over time, the preparation of the body, the magic rituals, and

grave goods were all essential parts of a proper Egyptian funeral

CATHOLIC FUNERAL

6

A memorial service, often called a funeral, is often officiated by clergy. A funeral may

take place at either a funeral home, church, or crematorium or cemetery chapel. A

funeral is held according to the family's choosing, which may be a few days after the time of death, allowing family members to attend the service. The deceased is often

transported in a procession (also called a funeral cortège), with a funeral service

vehicles, and private automobiles traveling in a procession to the church or other location where the services will be held. In some places after the funeral, the family and friends

meet to eat together.

MILITAR FUNERAL

A military funeral is a memorial or burial rite given by a country's military for

a soldier, sailor, marine or airman who died in battle, a veteran, or other prominent

military figures or heads of state. A military funeral may feature guards of honor, the

firing of volley shots as a salute, drumming and other military elements, with a flag draping over the coffin.

Transition: Well done kids! Well now that you know that there are different traditions around the world in relation to funerals let´s work with chapter 5 from “For weddings and a funeral” and you will find another tradition about funerals

7

PRACTICE (25 minutes):

Before reading: Before start reading, have you ever been in a funeral? How old were you? Did anybody spoke? A decease´s friend? A family friend? Do you know where funerals are celebrated in your town?

While reading: Now you are going to real chapter 5 from “Four weddings and a funeral” by Cherry Gilchrist. The chapter is going to be divided in two parts because, as the teacher told me, they are very slow readers. This way they will work this class and the next class with this chapter. T: Well kids now you are going to start reading this chapter. Some of you are going to read aloud. I will tell you which paragraph should reach each of you. While reading you should write down the words you think help to describe the funeral atmosphere.

After reading: Write a small text, a few lines describing the atmosphere in the funeral. Whose funeral was it? Did anybody speak? Who attended the funeral? How people described the deceased? Describe one characteristic of the late person. PRODUCTION (5 minutes) ICT: Well kids know you have to write a small text (a few lines) telling what this chapter is about. Who was the diseased, who went to the funeral and what happened in it. (Write this text in the “Classroom”)

I am going to create a space for us to work together therefore I will need you to give me your emails to add you to a virtual Classroom Once in the classroom you will add your comments. Remember to sing everything you post you do. You can work with this application through your cellphone.

NEXT CLASS: students will be asked to install in their cellphones the
