CLARKSON and CORNELL RENEW POSTSEASON RIVALRY

With a convincing sweep of Rensselaer in the fi rst round of the ECAC Hock-ey playoffs the Clarkson University Hockey team will advance to the

conference quarterfi nals for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the past four seasons.

Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy ’00 and Josh Hauge, the Golden Knights are one step away from advancing to Lake Placid for the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament in two weeks. The Knights, how-ever, face a big hurdle in their bid to return to the league’s showcase event for the fi rst time since winning it all in 2007. Clarkson will will travel down to Central NY to take on the 9th-ranked Big Red of Cornell in the best-of-three game series at Lynah Rink in Ithaca.

Clarkson owns a 17-14-5 overall record. The Knights fi nished in sixth place in the league standings with a 10-9-3 ECAC Hockey mark. The Green and Gold, who are participating in their 55th season of ECAC Hockey postseason play, made the most of their fi nal games at Cheel Arena for the season by skating past long-time rival RPI to open the playoffs. Clarkson equaled its season high for goals in Friday’s 7-4 win and then clinched the series on Saturday by winning a specialty teams battle over the Engineers, 4-2.

• Cornell is Clarkson’s oldest current rival and most familiar opponent in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The Knights and Big Red have played 29 times in the league’s post-season tournament with Cornell owning a 19-9-1 lead. Cornell holds a 10-7-1 ad-vantage over the Green and Gold in the conference quarterfi nal round games. The Big Red won the last postseason meeting, edging out the Green and Gold 1-0 in Game 3 of the 2014 quarterfi nals to win the best-of-three series 2-1 at Lynah Rink. Clarkson’s last playoff game victory over Cornell was a 4-1 win in Game 2 of that series, which was also the last time the Knights have won in Ithaca. The Knights’ last postseason series triumph over Cornell was in 2004 when Clarkson came from be-hind to stun the Big Red, winning Games 2 (5-4) and Game 3 (5-1) after losing Game 1 (5-1) in the quarterfi nal series at Lynah Rink. The Knights won their fi rst of fi ve ECAC Hockey Tournament titles by defeating the Big Red in 1966.

Head Coach Casey Jones“The Leonard S. Ceglarski Head Men’s Hockey”

Casey Jones is in his sixth year as the Golden Knights head coach in 2016-17. Named a fi -nalist three times for ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year in his short tenure at Clarkson, Jones was designated the second Leonard S. Ceglarski Chair for the Golden Knights in May of 2011, becoming one of few coaches nationally to hold an endowed coaching po-sition in the sport of ice hockey.

In each of his fi rst fi ve campaigns, Jones has had Clarkson in contention for an ECAC Hockey playoff fi rst-round bye right up until the fi nal weekend of the regular season. In two of the past three years, the Green and Gold have skated to 20 wins in a season.

Last season Clarkson was one of the hottest teams in the nation during the 2016 portion of the schedule and was one of only two ECAC Hockey programs to reach the 20-win mark overall. The Knights skated to a 20-15-3 overall record in 2015-16 and fi nished in a tie for fi fth place in the conference standings, just two points shy of a top-four showing, with a 10-9-3 league mark. The Knights played in a school-record four straight overtime postseason games, sweeping Princeton (3-2 2ot, 3-2ot) in fi rst round action at Cheel before falling at St. Lawrence (3-2ot, 3-2 2ot) in the quarterfi nals.

Clarkson has steadily boosted its national presence under Jones and is bringing in some of the fi nest student-athletes in the country. Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft. The crowds at Cheel have also progressively increased with Jones behind the bench, making the Green and Gold’s home ice one of the most intimating venues for oppos-ing teams in the nation. In 2015-16 Clarkson boasted the third best home-winning percentage in Division I. The Knights posted a .842 winning% with a 15-2-2 mark at Cheel Arena.

Several Knights have earned postseason honors during Jones’ tenure, including Matt Zarbo, who in 2013 became the fi rst Clarkson player to ever receive the prestigious ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the year award. Paul Geiger and James de Haas earned league all-star accolades last season.

After an extensive national search Jones returned to the University after serving the previous three years as associ-ate coach at Cornel. A native of Temiscaming, Quebec, Jones has recruited players and/or coached teams that have partici-pated in the NCAA Tr. eight times, including three schools and in two diff erent leagues. He worked as an assistant for the Knights under head coach Mark Morris from 1993-95. He spent 13 years (1995-2008) at Ohio State as a coach before returning to ECAC when he joined the staff at his alma mater, Cornell, for the 2008-09 campaign. When Jones was at Clark-son from 1993 to 1995, he contributed to the Golden Knights 43-19-9 record, an ECAC Hockey championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1995.

Jones was a four-year letter winner as a player for the Big Red, serving as team captain in 1989-90. For his career, he scored 112 points on 30 goals and 82 assists while playing in 110 contests. He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 10th-round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

Jones and his wife, Kimberlee, also a Cornell graduate, have a daughter, Gabrielle, and a son, Bryan.

THE SERIESCornell is Clarkson’s oldest current rival and most familiar opponent in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The Knights and Big Red have played 29 times in the league’s postseason tournament with Cornell owning a 19-9-1 lead.

The Knights’ last postseason series triumph over Cornell was in 2004 when Clarkson came from behind to stun the Big Red, winning Games 2 (5-4) and Game 3 (5-1) after losing Game 1 (5-1) in the quarterfi nal series at Lynah Rink.

Cornell holds a 10-7-1 advantage over the Green and Gold in the conference quarterfi nal round games.

The Knights won their fi rst of fi ve ECAC Hockey Tournament titles by defeating the Big Red in 1966.

Clarkson and Cornell fi rst played during the 1922-23 campaign with the teams battling to a 0-0 tie in Ithaca. The Big Red lead the rivalry against the Knights 64-53-15. Cornell holds a 6-2-2 advantage in the last 10 meetings, but the Green and Gold are on a three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2) after skating to a pair of 3-3 ties this season and a 2-1 victory in overtime in Potsdam last year on January 29. The overtime win at Cheel Arena last year snapped a four-game losing skid in the series for Clarkson. Cornell’s last win was a 5-2 victory at Lynah Rink on December 5, 2015.

Jordan Boucher (3-3) and James de Haas (2-4) are the Knights’ leading scorers against the Big Red with six points apiece. Troy Jo-sephs has two tallies and one assist in the rivalry. Sam Vigneault also has three points (1-2) against Cornell.

Through two games in the series, Jake Kielly posts a .895 save per-centage and a 2.77 goals against average and a 0-0-2 record.

In four games, Steve Perry holds a .946 save percentage, a 1.42 GAA and a 1-3 record against the Big Red. Ville Runola has started one game in the series and holds a .895 save percentage, a 2.07 GAA and a 0-1 mark.

Jordan Boucher scored two goals and Jake Kielly enjoyed a solid night in the crease with a 28-save eff ort as Clarkson gained a hard-earned point on the road. 14th-ranked Cornell outshot the Knights 31-16, holding the Green and Gold to their lowest shot total of the season. Clarkson, however, made the most of its limited opportunities to pick up its fi rst league point at Lynah Rink since December 3, 2011. The Knights were solid in specialty teams play, going 1-of-3 on the power play, while killing off four of Cornell’s fi ve man-advantage opportunities en route to snapping the Big Red’s three-game winning streak. Boucher opened the scoring with a great individual eff ort late in the fi rst period. Boucher picked off a Cornell clearing pass, split the defense and tucked in his fi rst goal of the night on a breakaway at 16:37. The Big Red came back less than two minutes later with a goal on a 4-on-4 situation with 1:50 remaining in the period. Clarkson grabbed a two-goal lead early in the middle frame with a pair of goals in a span of 2:15. Boucher scored again at 6:45 for his ninth of the season with Sam Vigneault assisting. The Knights connected for the fourth straight game on the power-play with Brett Gervais fi nishing off assists from Vigneault and James de Haas. With another goal late in a period, the Big Red pulled to within one after 40 minutes of action. Just 49 seconds into the third, Cornell tied the game with a power-play tally.

In a specialty-teams battle, the Knights came out on top to advance in the postseason by knocking Rensselaer out of the playoff s. The game’s fi rst fi ve goals all came on the power play. Clarkson came through with its sec-ond straight three-goal outing on the power play with a 3-of-6 eff ort with the man-advantage. The Knights allowed RPI to score on two of its fi rst three power-play chances, but the Green and Gold penalty killers came up big against the league’s top-rated unit over the fi nal 20 minutes. The Engineers had a pair of man-advantage chances in the third period when Clarkson was holding on to a one-goal lead, but the Knights turned away RPI’s bid to tie and sealed the victory with a late empty-net tally. Troy Josephs continued his torrid scoring streak with another two-goal eff ort, along with an assist, to lead the off ense. Josephs has now scored six goals over the past three games and has a team-high 19 goals in his fi nal collegiate campaign. Clarkson’s captain, James de Haas ripped a shot from between the circles for a power-play marker at 11:36 in the second period for the gamewinner and one of his three points on the night. The Knights’ leading scorer from the blueline, de Haas has at least one point in the last six games, including 10 (2-8) in the last three. He has 28 points (7-21) on the year.
