Life is a mission from on high.

Life is a quest for inner joy.

AT AGE SEVENTEEN, Jehanne LaPucelle (1412-1431) or, Joan of Arc, asshe is known, claimed a mandate fromGod to liberate France from decades ofEnglish domination. Since the time ofWilliam the Conqueror in 1066, succes-sive English kings, through intermarriage

and inheritance, claimed sovereigntyover large areas of France. The HundredYears War (1337-1453) was an attemptby the English to bring all of Franceunder the English crown. At a crucialtime, Joan of Arc was able to uniteFrance and turn the tide of war decisive-ly in its favor.

Joan burst onto the scene quite sud-

denly, a simple illiterate farm girl of

seventeen with no training except in the

domestic arts of spinning and sewing.

She vowed to succeed in driving out the

    English where other experienced mili-

tary leaders had failed. Some viewed her

as a foolish upstart, hopelessly nave, or

possibly insanenot a person to be

taken seriously. Others, from signs and

miracles, thought that perhaps she was

an instrument of the Divine and should

be given a chance to prove herself.

A voice from GodIn her own words she said, When I

was thirteen, I heard a voice from Godto help me to govern myself. The first

time, I was terrified. I heard it manytimes before I knew that it was St.Michael. He told me that Saint

Catherine and Saint Margaret wouldcome to me, and that I must follow

their counsel for it was at our Lords

command. They told me that my king

would be restored to his kingdom, despite his enemies and that I must

depart and go into France and that Iwould raise the siege before Orleans

And I answered the voice that I was apoor girl who knew nothing of riding

    and warfare.

Joan kept silent about the voices

for four years, until she felt certain of

Gods will. The voices then told her to

go to Vaucouleurs where Robert de

Baudricourt, captain of the town, wouldgive her men to go with her. Though

skeptical at first, Robert de Baudricourt

supplied her with men and arms.

By then, the military situation was

desperate and France was all but defeat-

ed. In his desperation, Charles, the

Dauphine, was willing to listen to the

Maid. Upon their first meeting Joan

said to him, I bring you news from

Joan of ArcDaughter of GodTzxChant of the

ZGod is life. God is joy.Life is Gods: Life is joy.

    by John Lenti

God, who is infinite, is life.

God, who is in all life, is joy.

\I want to ply my boat, many times,

    Across the gulf-after-death,

    And return to earths shores

    From my home in heaven.

bO! I will come again and again!Crossing a million crags of suffering; With bleeding feet, I will come,If need bea trillion times,

    As long as I know

One stray brother is left behind.

\I want to load my boat

    With those waiting, thirsty ones

    Who are left behind,

And carry them by the opal pool

    Of iridescent joy

    Where my Father distributes

    His all-desire-quenching liquid peace.

From Gods Boatman, by Paramhansa Yogananda,Whispers from Eternity, 1929.

    Listen! Listen!

    Whispering within your soul,

    Hints of laughter, hints of joy;

Sweet songs of sadness, of quenchless yearning

    For the Light,

For my love, your true home.
