Modern KitchensIn postwar America, modern kitchens became a prominent symbol of the American way of life. The heart of the suburban, single-family home, kitchens were stocked with the latest processed foods and filled with electric labor-saving appliances. Suburban builders like William Levitt promoted and reinforced the kitchen’s significance, relocating it from the back to the front of the house and integrating it with the living and dining rooms. Popular magazines advertised kitchens as status symbols, while manufacturers encouraged consumers to transform their kitchens into showcases of progress.
Julia Child’s real kitchen stands both in contrast to and in harmony with the sleek and modern ideal promoted for American suburban dwellers of the 1950s and ’60s. With her husband Paul, Julia Child designed and set up this kitchen in 1961. As a serious cook, author, and teacher, Julia had strong opinions about how her kitchen should be arranged. Its homey atmosphere, with simple, painted cabinetry and butcher-block countertops contrasts with the shiny surfaces pictured in kitchen brochures of the time. Yet her embrace of new appliances was very much in keeping with ideas of a “new and improved” kitchen.
Julia’s Kitchen by Design
Julia and Paul Child designed this kitchen when they moved into their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1961. They had been living abroad for more than a decade due to Paul’s work as a cultural attaché with the United States Information Service. After living in Paris, Marseilles, Germany, and Norway, Julia and Paul were ready to set up a kitchen of their own.
Built for a tall cookTo accommodate Julia’s height of six feet, two inches, the solid maple counters are thirty-two inches high, two inches taller than standard kitchen counters.
Julia towering over the stove in her Paris apartment, 1948. Note the tools and utensils hanging at the ready.
Photo by Paul Child. Courtesy of Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University
Work zonesJulia organized her kitchen around work zones, making sure tools and equipment were placed near the surfaces where they would be used. Her pots, pans, and utensils are near the stove, her knives are near the sink, and her small appliances are set on solid work surfaces, ready to use.
A Place for Everything
While kitchens of the 1950s and 1960s were often designed to keep everything hidden from view, Julia and Paul preferred to hang their pots and pans on a pegboard for quick and easy access. Nor would there be any confusion about where that pan belonged after it had been used, thanks to the outlines Paul traced on the pegboard. Later, for the benefit of student and guest cooks working in the kitchen with Julia, snapshots were added.
Fantasy KitchensCreated for an Aladdin lunchbox, these illustrations feature the animated television sitcom The Jetsons. Wife and mother Jane is in charge of the family’s meals, which are programmed via punchcards, fed to a computer, and prepared by pushing a button. The scene pokes fun at futuristic utopias that promised instant meals and lives of leisure.

Visitors to the New York World’s Fair were dazzled by fanciful and impractical kitchen designs.

Philomena Dougherty in her new, color-coordinated kitchen in Levittown, Pennsylvania. Stainless-steel kitchens, a standard feature of Levittown houses, were aesthetically appealing and signaled up-to-date living—a marker previously reserved for upper-class homes.

“Built to Fit Your Wife,” 1953
Popular Science magazine portrayed the modern kitchen as a serious work space while reinforcing the traditional notion of the kitchen as a place for housewives. This article described a project at Cornell University that re-engineered the kitchen, setting up setting up efficient work zones that would “fit the woman.”

Installation PhotographsTHE FIRST LADIES National Museum of American History
For this exhibition I designed all elements from concept through fabrication and installation.
Responsibilities included 3-D design (using Vectorworks) and Graphic Design (using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop).
I worked directly with lighting technicians to develop the lighting plan, and supervised several interns who assisted in design documentation and typesetting of exhibition graphics.

Installation PhotographsFOOD: TRANSFORMING THE AMERICAN TABLE, 1950-2000National Museum of American History
For this exhibition I designed all elements from concept through fabrication and installation.
Responsibilities included 3-D design (using Vectorworks) and Graphic Design (using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop).
I worked directly with lighting technicians to develop the lighting plan. I also supervised several interns who assisted in design documentation and typesetting of exhibition graphics.

Between 1950 and 2000,new technologies and cultural changes
transformed how and what we eat.
Mexican, Thai, or Indian for
dinner tonight?
I started eating organic in the ‘80s.
Bagged lettuce—the best thing since
sliced bread.
Sushi, the new
conveniencefood.
My grandmother cooked three meals a day. I just pick up better meals
that are zap-able. My son is a much better cook than I
ever was.
For here or to go?

Construction Documentation / Renderings for Installation GuidanceFOOD: TRANSFORMING THE AMERICAN TABLE, 1950-2000National Museum of American History

FLOOOR PLAN: Notes for Demolition and Construction for NMAHScale: 1/4" = 1'-0"1
Demo/Construction Plan NMAH
Re-Hanging DoorsAt either end of the gallery there are two doorways to enter or exit the space (total of four doorways.) Each doorframe holds a pair of mahogany doors with brass hardware. Each pair of doors needs to be re-hung in their door frame. One doorframe has a small amount of damage that needs to be repaired. In addition to the four doorways at the ends of the gallery, there are two small closets in the middle of thegallery, each with a pair of doors identical to the previously mentioned doors. Currently one closet has its doors in place, but the other one needs the doors re-hung in their frame.

1. Demolition and Finishing Four Cavities Two at Each End of the GalleryImmediately inside the space, at either end of the gallery are two cavities in the walls (two at each end, totaling four). Currently each cavity is filled with an exhibit case that has a set of shelves and glass doors. The shelves and glass doors need to be removed and the exterior casing patched and painted. Each of these four cavities has the potential to be a location for an interactive computer station. Therefore, each cavity needs to be equippedwith electrical and data ports.

2. Fabrication of Text Panel FramesMahogany style finish to match the existing doors. Text Frames need to accommodate a cleat at the back and simple switch-out of graphics.
3.
Fabrication of Wood PanelingMahogany style finish to match the existing doors. Wood paneling is modular to accommodate a plain finish with a cleat for a text panel, or decorative paneling to immitate existing wood doors.
4.
Fabrication of Computer DeskMahogany style finish to match the existing doors. Desk has a cabinet for housing A/V equipment. Ventilation and power access must be included in the design.

Plugging Four Arched CavitiesIn the middle section of the gallery there are four arch-topped cavities in the walls. Within these cavities are exhibit cases similar to the ones in the four cavities at the ends of thegallery. The cases are composed of shelving with glass doors on the front. These cases need to be covered over and finished to match the walls of the gallery. The plug that will cover over the cases needs to be recessed from themain wall by at least an inch to maintain the architectural look of the arched cavity. In this location will be hung wood-framed graphic and text panels on cleats or z-clips.
6.
Fabrication of ScrimTranslucent scrim to be hung behind a text panel (which is suspended by wire). Scrim is printed with a transcription of the Gettysburg Address.

ELEVATION: Back Panel with CleatsScale: 1/2" = 1'-0"3 ELEVATION: Middle Layer of Paneling
Scale: 1/2" = 1'-0"4 ELEVATION: Outer Layer of PanelingScale: 1/2" = 1'-0"5
Paneling consists of three layers
1) Back solid panel. The back panel has cleats available for installation of a text panel when the decorative paneling is not in place. The back panel is secured into the niche with cam-locks or dead bolts.
2) Middle layer with holes cut in it. This layer has a simple beadmoulding, or quarter round, to finish off the holes. This layer is cut from a single sheet of plywood, not pieced together. The back of the middle layer must have cut-outs to accommodate the cleats that are on the back panel.
3) Outer layer with larger holes cut in it. This layer has mouldingthat matches the existing doors (per Peter Albritton spec) to finish off the holes. The outer layer is pieced together the way that the existing closet doors are constructed.
The outer and middle layer are laminated together to form a single sheet that is installed on the back panel using hangerbolts (per Peter Albritton spec).

Installation Photographs / FULL GALLERY (Left), CASE LAYOUT (Right)ALBERT H. SMALL DOCUMENTS GALLERY // Cosmos In MiniatureNational Museum of American History
I designed nine exhibitions for the Albert H. Small Documents Gallery. These included: The Gettysburg Address, The Emancipation Proclamation, Duke Ellington’s Jazz Manuscripts, Earl Shaffer’s Diary of the Appalachian Trail, Phyllis Diller’s Gag File, and the Thomas Jefferson Bible.
For each exhibition I completed all 3-D design (using Vectorworks) and Graphic Design (using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop).

Tools and DrawingsCREATIVE PROCESS / CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
My creative process always begins with three things:
Listening, Observing, and Drawing
Pictured here are my personal drawing tools, and some examples of early concept sketching, bubble planning, and, inspiration gathering.
