Clad Casement& Awning Window Installation Instructions

Please read installation instruc-tions carefully before starting.

This section includes install instructionsfor clad casement and awning windows.

Installation of Unit:

1. Check rough opening to insure thatopening is level, plumb and square.Verify that width and height dimensionsare correct. Rough opening should be3/4” wider than overall frame width and3/4” greater than overall frame height.Sill plate should be flat and level.Make sure opening is dry, clean andfree of dirt and debris.

Sill Flashing and Sealing:

2. An overview of the proper flashingsequence is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

3. Begin flashing of the rough opening(RO) by applying flashing materialalong the exterior edge of the sill plate(see Figure 2). Make sure that theflashing extends 9” beyond both sidesof the RO (see Figure 3).

Figure 2

Figure 3

4 Note: Flashing and/or an appropri-ate method of sealing shall bedesigned as a part of an overallweather resistive barrier system. Itis not the responsibility of the win-dow manufacturer to design or rec-ommend a flashing system appropri-ate for each job condition.

4 Note: Flashing material is recom-mended to be at least 9” wide.

Caution: Any variance from thisinstallation procedure signifiesthat proper waterproofingbecomes the responsibility of thedesign professional and/or theinstaller.

4. Next, apply another length of flash-ing that will cover the sill plate. Cut tolength a piece of flashing that is 2”wider than the opening and apply asshown (see Figure 4). Overlap thisflashing (in weatherboard fashion)approximately 1” onto the previouslyapplied flashing.

Figure 4

5. Carefully cut the flashing to fit theopening using the rough stud as a guide(see Figure 5).

Figure 5

6. Fold the middle section of the flashingonto the sill plate. Keep as smooth andwrinkle free as possible (see Figure 6).

Figure 6

7. Cut two small pieces of flashing tofit into the corners of the rough open-ing. Each piece should extend thewidth of the rough stud and approxi-mately 1” up the side (see Figures 7, 8& 9). Check sill for level.

8. Next, pre-drill 1/8” holes throughthe nailing flange to prepare forinstalling the window into the roughopening (see Figure 10). The holesshould be drilled through the indenta-tion that runs the length of the nailingflange. Start the holes approx. 3” - 4”from each corner and then 12” – 16” oncenter thereafter.

Figure 10

9. Once the flange holes have beenpre-drilled, apply a 1/2” bead ofpolyurethane along the backside of the45º clad frame miter joint (see Figure11). Tool sealant bead in place.

Figure 11

10. Next, apply a continuous 1/2” beadof polyurethane along the head andboth side jambs of the rough opening(see Figure 12). Do not apply a contin-uous sealant bead along the front edgeof the sill.

Figure 12

11. Apply two 1/2” beads ofpolyurethane sealant along the width ofthe sill plate for the window sill to seton (see Figure 13). The first beadshould be discontinuous, located 1/4”from the exterior edge of the roughopening. The second bead should becontinuous, located 4” from the exterioredge of the rough opening.

12. Insert and center the window in therough opening (see Figure 14). Whendoing so, tilt the window back so thatthe sill can be set into the opening andonto the sealant. Take care not toscrape sealant off the sill plate.

Figure 14

Caution: Lift and position win-dows with care. Some windowsor window mullion assembliesare very heavy. Please use twoor more people to handle heavywindows.

13. With the window set into the roughopening, check to make sure it is cen-tered. Tack the window in place withone 1-1/2” stainless steel screw (orequivalent) in the side nailing flangewithin 3” - 6” of each corner (seeFigure 15).

Figure 15

Check for Square and Alignment:

Make sure that the window is setstraight, flat and level. Use a tapemeasure to measure the diagonaldimensions of the frame to ensure thatthe frame is square. Also, check framewidth across top, middle and bottom(see Figures 16 & 17).

Figure 16

Figure 17

Page 5: Clad Casements and Awnings Installation Guide

This measurement should be double-checked with a framing square. Shimat the top of the side jambs as required.Use a level or straight edge to verifythat the jambs and sill are straight (seeFigures 18-21).

Securing the Window and Final Flashing:

1. With the window straight, squareand level, finish securing in place.Secure the nailing flange to the sheath-ing, beginning 3” - 4” from the cornerand 12” - 16” thereafter (see Figure22).

2. Place a small amount ofpolyurethane over the head of eachscrew (see Figure 23). Tool sealant inplace.

Figure 23

3. With the unit completely secured tothe structure, apply a bead of sealant atthe edge of the head jamb nailingflange where it meets the sheathing. Also, apply similar beads of sealantbetween the edge of the side jamb nail-ing flange and the flashing material.Tool the sealant into the joint to ensurethe joint is filled.

4. Apply a layer of flashing over theside jamb nailing flange. The length ofthe flashing should equal the height ofthe RO + (2x width of the flashingmaterial) –1”. Install the flashing sothat the edge contacts the inside cornerof the nailing flange. The top of theflashing should extend only 8-1/2”above the top edge of the windowframe. Make sure that the side flashingoverlaps and covers the ends of the sillflashing. Repeat for opposite side (seeFigures 24-27).

5. The length of the head flashingshould equal width of RO + (2x widthof the flashing material) + 2”. Extend1” beyond edge of each side flashing(see Figures 28 & 29). Attach top edgeof flashing to the wall.

6. Unlock window, use crank operator toopen window and verify that window openssmoothly and correctly (see Figure 30).

Applying the Operator Cover:

Observe the backside of the Encorestyle rotary operator cover. Note thebuilt-in clips at each end of the cover(see Figure 31). Orient the cover asshown in Figure 32. Press the coveronto the base so that it snaps in place ateach end. Next, attach the folding han-dle and tighten the set screw to anchorin place (see Figure 33). The handlefolds neatly into the cover nest whennot in use (see Figure 34).

Applying the Operator Cover:

The Aspen window utilizes a unique, hidden lock system. The locking mech-anism for an Aspen casement or awningwindow is located beneath the rotaryoperator.

A nylon construction lock handle isprovided with each window to preventthe finished metal handle from becom-ing damaged during manufacture andinstallation.

For convenience, a hole in the tip of thehandle allows it to be used in place of arotary operator handle to open or closethe window. Place the hole over thespline on the operator and rotate.

The lock handle inserts into the fork atthe front of the lock base (Figure 35).Press the handle into the fork until insnaps into place. Handle can beremoved by grasping firmly and pullingstraight out. Make sure handle and forkare oriented as shown in Figure 35.Rotate the handle fully to the left orright to lock or unlock the window(Figure 36). When moving the handleinto the locked position, it will snapinto place.

Figure 35

Figure 36

To install the finish hardware, firstremove the construction handle. Alignthe lock escutcheon plate as shown(Figure 37) with the curved face up.Note that the fork fits through the slotin the escutcheon. Gently press theescutcheon plate into the lock base untilit snaps into place. Insert the metal fin-ish handle into the fork in the samefashion as the construction handle(Figure 38). Note the tip of the handlebends to one side (Figure 39). Thisbend provides visual verification of thelocked or unlocked position.

Figure 39

In the locked position, the handle tipwill appear to lay flat against the win-dow sill. In the unlocked position, thetip bends away from the window sill(fig 40). Left hand window operationis shown. Right hand window lockhandle position will be opposite. Thehandle is reversible to accomodateeither handing.
